Adapted from the bestselling novel by Lisa Taddeo, Three Women brings intimate stories to the screen. The series focuses on Lina, a neglected wife in Indiana, Sloane, a businesswoman in Martha’s Vineyard with an open marriage, and Maggie, a young woman dealing with trauma from her past. We also follow Gia, a journalist hoping to shine light on female sexuality through their tales.
Showtime and Starz worked together to bring these real women’s experiences to television after Taddeo spent years interviewing them for her book. The show sensitively handles complex issues around sex, empowerment, and injustice. This review aims to understand each character’s journey while examining how the series approaches such challenging topics.
From Sloane navigating attraction outside her marriage to Lina seeking fulfillment denied by her husband, their stories offer glimpse into lives we may not otherwise see. Maggie’s bravery in confronting her abuser despite...

Friday’s Three Women premiere gives viewers a taste of female desire — but it’s just foreplay so far.
Based on Lisa Taddeo’s bestselling nonfiction book, the Starz series premiere introduces us to Gia (played by Big Little Lies’ Shailene Woodley): a journalist trying to write a book about pleasure — specifically, sex in America. She meets with Gay Talese (James Naughton), a notable journalist who investigated sexuality in 1981’s Thy Neighbor’s Wife, who tells her she needs to “f–k married men” to find the story.

Three Women has finally made its debut on Starz! The series was originally ordered by Showtime but the network decided not to air the show. That's when Starz stepped in and based on the first episode so far, we're so glad it did! Here's a recap of the first episode, "three women." Spoilers Below.
Courtesy: Starz Gia
Shailene Woodley plays Gia, the writer who sets out to tell the stories of the trio we meet in episode 1. She's kind of stuck and needs to find something different and exciting to write about when it comes to sex in America. She gets some advice from her "idol," who tells her to travel around the country and sleep with married men to get insight. She takes one part of that advice, and it's not sleeping with married men.
Though she does go on a roadtrip to find her subjects, and she eventually does.

Starz already won the battle for the steamiest show of the fall with “Three Women,” its adaptation of Lisa Taddeo’s 2019 nonfiction book of the same name. But even though this drama is filled with sweaty sex and orgasms, viewers may be surprised by the intimate and insightful themes explored on the show.
“There’s so much focus on the female-centric parts of the show, but to me, it’s just a show about human beings doing the best they can under really intense circumstances. That’s just called life,” series star Shailene Woodley told TheWrap.
“It allowed me to have different insights into parts of myself that maybe I was running from,” the actor behind Gia added. “It’s even something [Taddeo] wrote into the script. If you could affect one person and know it made a small difference in their life, you’ve done something beautiful. That would be...

“I can’t write about my parents, I have to write about sex — specifically, sex in America,” Gia Lombardi (Shailene Woodley) says, early in “Three Women.” Sitting across from New Journalism pioneer Gay Talese (James Naughton), a living, breathing, propositioning representation of the patriarchy, Gia is trying to find a new direction of her own. The book she’s already written has been dismissed by her publisher. They found it boring, among other issues, and she’s been sent to speak with the author of the 1981 book on sexuality in America, “Thy Neighbor’s Wife,” to find a stronger angle into her extremely broad thesis.
She doesn’t, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say “Three Women” doesn’t either. Even when Gia is giving her closing summary, pinning down what she’s learned at the end of her long, country-spanning journey, her conclusion is wider than the old...

Spend enough time complaining about padded limited series that would have worked better as movies and superfluously ambitious movies that would have been better fulfilled as limited series, and it becomes a relief to offer a small new variation: Starz’s new 10-hour limited series Three Women would have been better as three movies. Or possibly it would have been better as a three-season anthology series. All I know is that watching Lisa Taddeo’s adaptation of her own acclaimed book, I’ve rarely been as conscious that the way a story was being presented onscreen couldn’t possibly be the best way for that given story to be told.
Three Women is, more accurately, three different stories told in suboptimal fashion — maybe four if you include what should have been a framing device but, owing presumably to “It’s my darned book” privilege, has been given equal weight throughout.

If you look up the definition of “flawed,” it would say something like “characterized by weakness or imperfection.” Three Women tells the story of not three, but four “flawed” women in a 10-episode series. It essentially is a riveting story about the intimate lives of these four women and finding oneself through sisterhood in the most unexpected places. I don’t think Three Women is a perfect show; in fact, I think it’s quite, for the lack of a better word, “flawed,” but it’s still surprisingly heartfelt. The show tells the story of Gia, a struggling novelist who’s on the brink of being sued by her publicist because her work’s just not giving. Okay, picture working on a book about fornication, and your white “old man” mentor tells you to go sleep with (I’m not using the French for obvious reasons) every married man you...

Let's be honest. When you first think about a streamer to subscribe to or check out what's in their catalog, Starz is not the first one to come to mind. Even though for me personally, I really like the streaming service's offerings and think it's great at producing quality shows. Outlander of course being No. 1!

When Lisa Taddeo got the call in early 2023 that Showtime was pulling the plug on her television series, she didn’t answer. “It was my birthday,” she recalls. “I picked up my daughter from her guitar lesson, got a flat tire and waited a couple hours for the tow truck. By the time we got home, I was too exhausted to call my agents back.”
The following day, Taddeo got the news. Three Women, an adaptation of the nonfiction phenomenon she’d published in 2019, no longer would air the 10-episode first season it already had in the can. Adding to the devastation, the journalist turned screenwriter would have to tell her cast, led by Shailene Woodley, and the real women who inspired the other characters. Starz hit the Television Critics Assn. press tour Thursday with a new tagline (“We’re All Adults Here”) and news on several new and returning series — including a greenlight for the yakker “Fat Joe Talks” (hosted by the “What’s Luv” hip-hop star) and news that it had acquired the U.S. and Canada broadcast rights to “Sweetpea,” a new drama starring and executive produced by Ella Purnell.
Starz also announced new castmembers for its upcoming spinoff “Spartacus: House of Ashur,” the latest series in the “Spartacus” universe. Graham McTavish joins the cast as Ashur’s Doctore, who trains the gladiators. Tenika Davis (“Jupiter’s Legacy”) will play the first female gladiator in the “Spartacus” universe, described as “a fierce warrior driven to surpass her male counterparts and earn her freedom.”

Poolman is an empty film.
Darren Barrenman (Chris Pine) is an emotionally stunted man with a short attention span and a bee in his bonnet: conspiracy theories concerning local government planning decisions. Its a premise that could draw you in to watching a quirky comedy mystery. The only mystery is why anyone would stay to the end of Poolman. When he is not cleaning the single small pool outside of a block of condos, 'Db' is making a nuisance of himself petitioning council meetings over planning, public transport and reptoid involvement. About halfway through the film he is approached by an enigmatic woman with a proposal.
June Del Rey puts in a good performance as the femme fatale DeWanda Wise: alluring and dangerous. A subtle and knowing performance by Jennifer Jason Leigh as Susan Kerkovich, Barrenman's girlfriend, along with the two small supports by Clancy Brown and Ray Wise,...

Poolman had a lot going for it. Chris Pine, a solid and dependable actor, is directing for the first time while also playing a Lebowski-esque lead character. A Los Angeles-set neo-noir tale of conspiracy, scheming, and murder. And a stacked cast—filled with names like Annette Benning, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Clancy Brown, DeWanda Wise, Stephen Tobolowsky, alongside the legendary Danny DeVito and Ray Wise (Twin Peaks fans should know who that is). Sadly, the film turned out to be nothing but a big howler. I can’t believe I’m saying this, but absolutely nothing works here. The writing is clunky. The central mystery is dumber than the detective novels I used to write inside my head when I was in the seventh grade. Nothing good can be said about the acting either, except DeVito and Wise, who always fire no matter what the situation. The only saving grace is probably the retro-cool soundtrack,...

Stars: DeWanda Wise, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun, Betty Buckley, Tom Payne, Veronica Falcon | Written by Jeff Wadlow, Greg Erb, Jason Oremland | Directed by Jeff Wadlow
Produced by BlumHouse and directed by Jeff Wadlow (Fantasy Island), Imaginary is a solidly entertaining Friday night horror flick that does a decent job with its premise. It may not deliver any really big scares (at least not if you’re not frightened of bears or spiders), but it’s consistently creepy and tense and Wadlow pulls off a couple of neat twists.
DeWanda Wise plays Jessica, a children’s book author and illustrator who has recently married musician Max (Tom Payne) and become stepmother to his two daughters, stroppy teenager Taylor (Taegen Burns) and six year-old Alice (Pyper Braun). When the family move into Jessica’s old family home, Alice finds an old teddy bear in the basement and quickly turns him into her imaginary friend,...

Chris Pine’s directorial debut Poolman released a couple of days ago may be the best thing that ever happened to him, but everyone else would probably disagree. Starring Pine himself, the movie got its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival where it was received coldly, yet relatively well, but after things were quick to get out of the actor’s control.
Upon its release in the US on May 10, Poolman was brutally crushed by both critics and viewers ending up with quite miserable scores of 18% and 22% respectively.
Being Chris Pine’s brainchild in all aspects, Poolman follows Darren Barrenman who spends his days cleaning the pool of the Tahitian Tiki apartment block while also trying to turn Los Angeles, his hometown, into a better place to live in.

It all seemed great on paper. Chris Pine is the director, main star, and co-writer (with Ian Gotler). Alongside him, we have Annette Benning, Ray Wise, Ariana DeBose, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Danny DeVito – all great and well-known names. The movie? A mystery comedy akin to Polanski’s 1970s classic Chinatown, with a random poolman as the main character who discovers a sizeable water heist. It couldn’t be that bad, could it? Well, it could. The movie premiered in Toronto last year and the critics were not satisfied even then. Now, the movie is available in theaters in the United States, and we are sad to report that the critics have panned the movie completely, making Pine’s directorial debut a failure.
The movie’s official synopsis is as follows: “In Chris Pine’s feature directorial debut, Poolman tells the story of Darren Barrenman (Pine), a native Angeleno who...

Review: (Note – Poolman Was Reviewed At TIFF 2023) In the fourteen years I’ve been covering TIFF, I’ve seen only a handful of movies that I’d say were shockingly bad. The Mickey Rourke/ Megan Fox/ Bill Murray dud Passion Play comes to mind. Poolman ranks with the worst movies I’ve ever reviewed at JoBlo. It’s a stunningly unfunny comic noir vanity project for star Chris Pine, who also directed and co-wrote the film. With many starring roles, including the “Star Trek” and “Wonder Woman” franchises, Chris Pine is obviously leading man material. But the actor recently went behind the camera for his directorial debut, “Poolman,” a comedy-mystery that he co-wrote and stars in alongside Annette Bening, DeWanda Wise, Ariana DeBose, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVito, and more.
Premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, it’s a film that Pine is exceptionally proud of, but it was savaged with negative reviews at the time (it currently sits at 19% on Rotten Tomatoes).
