Stars: Justice Smith, David Alan Grier, An-Li Bogan, Drew Tarver, Michaela Watkins, Aisha Hinds, Tim Baltz, Rupert Friend, Nicole Byer | Written and Directed by Kobi Libii
The debut feature from writer-director Kobi Libii, this blackly comic fantasy comedy has a solid central idea, but never quite gets to grips with its own satirical intent. Ultimately, it works better as an offbeat romantic comedy, thanks to an engaging central performance and charming chemistry between the two leads.
Justice Smith stars as Aaron Mbondo, an artist in Los Angeles whose yarn sculptures aren’t quite cutting it with the art gallery crowd. After a painful show, during which he’s mistaken for a waiter, insult is added to injury when he’s nearly beaten up by some white guys who think he’s a mugger. However, he’s rescued at the last minute by Roger (David Alan Grier), a server he recognises from the gallery.

Just as “The Blackening” parodied the horror movie cliché that Black characters are killed off first, the “magical Negro” trope is now getting its own satirical take.
Writer-director Kobi Libii is behind “The American Society of Magical Negroes,” which premieres at 2024 Sundance. The film, distributed by Focus Features, stars Justice Smith as Aren, a young man who is recruited into a “secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people’s lives easier,” per the official synopsis.
“I know you can feel their discomfort,” the trailer says. “Watching you walk through a room full of white people is the most painful thing I’ve ever seen.”
The plot is further teased: “That’s why we fight white discomfort every day. Because the happier they are, the safer we are.”

Season 3 of "The Righteous Gemstones" isn't over quite yet, but HBO has already seen the light when it comes to the comedy series about a dysfunctional evangelical empire: The show has just been renewed for a fourth season. This shouldn't come as a huge surprise since the Danny McBride-created show is a raucous crowd-pleaser whose most recent season earned a 100% Rotten Tomatoes critics' score, but it's still exciting news for fans of the show. McBride's previous comedy series, "Vice Principals," was canceled after just two seasons, so it's great that HBO is letting "The Righteous Gemstones" spread its (very silly and stupid) word for at least one more season.
"The Righteous Gemstones" has actually hit higher viewership metrics in season 3 than in either of its earlier seasons, according to a press release from the network. Recent episodes are averaging 4.9 million viewers, making it McBride's most-watched show. For reference, "Succession,...

HBO is listening to the prayers of The Righteous Gemstones fans by green-lighting another season of the hit series. The Righteous Gemstones Season 4 renewal comes as WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike against unfavorable conditions throughout the entertainment industry. Naturally, production on the new season would start once negotiations conclude and new work conditions across both organizations become established.
Created by Danny McBride, The Righteous Gemstones tells the story of a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work. When the Gemstone children finally gain control of the Church, they discover running a holy house is more complicated than they ever imagined.
The Righteous Gemstones has grown exponentially throughout the years. [This interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike authorization.] [Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Righteous Gemstones Season 3, Episode 6, “For Out of the Heart Comes Evil Thoughts.”] When it comes to The Righteous Gemstones, no character comes across as pathetic as Judy Gemstone’s (Edi Patterson) husband, Bj (Tim Baltz). That’s due in part to Baltz’s fabulous performance, but it also relies on some seriously funny writing, which served up a memorable fight in the show’s latest installment, “For Out of the Heart Comes Evil Thoughts.” As viewers who have been tuning into Season 3 know by now, Judy and Bj hit their biggest obstacle yet when she had an extramarital affair while on the road touring with her music for the family church. The culprit was band member Stephen (Stephen Schneider), who, despite Judy’s request to move on, continued to instigate and agitate her until it became an issue for the church as ...

The Righteous Gemstones wouldn’t gel without Judy. The middle sibling and only sister among three adult heirs to a televangelist empire in the brash, ungodly HBO series — played by the comedic wonder Edi Patterson, also a writer on the show — Judy Gemstone is a chaotic hinge for her dysfunctional family. Stifled by an evangelical patriarchy that automatically makes her brothers more important, she’s prone to awkward outbursts and bullying her own submissive fiancé (now husband), Bj, played by Tim Baltz.

Plot: When the spoiled Gemstone children finally get their wish to take control of the Church, they discover leadership is harder than they imagined and that their extravagant lifestyle comes with a heavy price.

Danny McBride’s The Righteous Gemstones is back for a third season of hilarious hijinks of sacrilegious genius. While the second season of The Righteous Gemstones took things in a darker direction with insight into the youth of Eli Gemstone (John Goodman) with a downbeat ending, this new run is decidedly lighter with just as many dick jokes and brilliant insults. HBO is bringing back its most beloved, ultra-rich adult children fighting for their family business. I’m talking, of course, about the Gemstones.
Danny McBride’s absurdist megachurch comedy returns for Season 3 on June 18, as “The Righteous Gemstones” unveiled the first trailer for its next installment. The high-octane teaser clip features monster trucks, high-speed racing and none other than Steve Zahn, who appears to play a rival to Jesse, Judy and Kelvin Gemstone.
John Goodman also stars as the Gemstone family patriarch, alongside series regulars Cassidy Freeman, Tim Baltz, Tony Cavalero and Walton Goggins. The official Season 3 logline from HBO reads, “When the spoiled Gemstone children finally get their wish to take control of the Church, they discover leadership is harder than they imagined and that their extravagant lifestyle comes with a heavy price.”

The best joke in “History of the World, Part I” is the tablets. Moses descending from the mountaintop, bearing 15 commandments, only to drop one of the three in his armful, is as simple and elegant as you can get. It’s in Mel Brooks’ delivery, but it’s also in the way that punchline plays in any area. Any era, from vaudeville to Vine, gets an equal shot at that laugh.
Arguably, the second best joke in “History of the World, Part I” is the quick epilogue that smushes together slices of ideas as a test case for what a potential sequel might have looked like. The stuff wedged into the end of that 1981 movie is weirder, more abstract, and, yes, shorter. For decades, the fact that “Part 2” never came only made it funnier in its own way.

Spoofs are all about volume. Deliver enough punchlines and there are almost guaranteed to be duds — but if you get enough big laughs, viewers will be too busy wheezing and wiping away tears to notice.
With the possible exception of the Airplane! guys, nobody knows this better than Mel Brooks. There are jokes in Blazing Saddles that fall flat. You mostly don’t remember them, because so much of it is still a riot. And because so much of Dracula: Dead and Loving It is stagnant, the few punchlines that land are rarely mentioned.
As Mel Brooks spoofs go, 1981’s History of the World, Part I is right in the middle. It has great bits — I quote “It is said that the people are revolting.” “You said it. They stink on ice!” in my head at least once a week — and flailing duds and stretches I think were memorable that...

Mel Brooks is one of the few remaining living legends in pop culture to have survived so many generational shifts. He started as a comedy writer in the earliest days of television, helped shape and transform modern movie humor, and eventually ended up creating a sea change on Broadway as well with an adaptation of "The Producers," one of his first movies. And now, more than seven full decades after he started in TV, Brooks is back on the small screen, as glimpsed in the opening of the Hulu limited series "History of the World, Part II." But true to form, the Brooks we get a glimpse of is a joke in and of itself: it's a very "swole" Brooks (Aka a bodybuilder with a de-aged version of Brooks' face slapped in front of his own visage). It's a microcosm of this sketch series, as shameless and crass and incredibly funny as Brooks' own work.

All the characters in the HBO comedy series "The Righteous Gemstones" are subject to each other's insults, but no one gets quite as much flack as Benjamin Jason "Bj" Barnes (Tim Baltz). As Judy's subservient husband, he is at the bottom of the Gemstone ladder. But in one key moment in season 2, Bj gets his shine with a major fashion statement — a pink satin men's romper.
Bj gets baptized into the Gemstone family in episode 4 of season 2. While he is normally limited to the role of Judy's sidekick, he finally has his own moment in the sun. Rather than shy away from the attention, he leans into it with a flashy costume. But Baltz wasn't feeling as confident as Bj about the bold new outfit.
"I definitely Googled romper, and I was like, 'What? I'm really gonna be in this thing? My fiancé has rompers. I'm gonna be in one?...

When it was first announced that "Roseanne" was getting a revival series, people were thrilled. The groundbreaking sitcom was hailed for its accurate portrayal of a blue-collar, working-class family in the late 1980s and 1990s, and featured decorated character actors and comedians like Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, and Laurie Metcalf effortlessly delivered relatable comedy to millions in the U.S. Thus, the return of "Roseanne" was welcomed with open arms ... that is until Barr went off on a racist tirade on Twitter and the show was canceled only a few days after it had premiered.

If you've never watched the 1981 Mel Brooks film "The History of the World, Part I," now is the time to do it. All these years later, a sequel series, "The History of the World, Part II," is hitting Hulu in March. Even if you haven't seen it, you've definitely heard people quote it, from the Torquemada musical number in The Spanish Inquisition segment to lines like, "It's good to be the king," and the "No, no, yes" song from Madeline Kahn. I feel pretty confident when I say that it's one of the funniest movies of all time, and I'm hardly alone in that sentiment.
"History of the World, Part I" is irreverent and absolutely stupid in the most wonderful way, and even after dozens of viewings, I still giggle to myself about parts of it whenever they cross my mind. Not only did Brooks write, direct, and star as Moses,...

It’s a common refrain: Mel Brooks, the comedy mastermind behind “The Producers” and “Space Balls,” could never make a Mel Brooks movie in today’s climate. Well, Mel Brooks made a Mel Brooks series, Hulu’s “History of the World, Part II,” in this very climate.
Nick Kroll, who is a main executive producer, star, and director on the upcoming eight-episode sequel to 1981’s “History of the World, Part I,” told TV critics that the times-have-changed notion is overblown. “I don’t think it’s as tricky to navigate doing comedy right now as people would like to imagine,” Kroll said at Saturday’s Television Critics Association winter press tour. “You just have to be funny.”
Fortunately for Kroll, he and Brooks are very funny. As are the dozens of other comedians and comedic actors who jumped at the chance to work with Brooks, their shared comedy hero. And...

Back in 1981, between “High Anxiety” and “Spaceballs,” Mel Brooks released “History of the World Part I,” a parody of epic films where at least part of the joke was that there was never going to be a Part II. But after 40 years, that’s no longer the case, as “History of the World Part II,” a limited series follow-up to the film is set to premiere on Hulu March 6. The streamer announced the news January 13, in addition to releasing a teaser for the sketch series.
Similar to the film, which consisted of five segments spanning the Stone Age to the French Revolution, each episode of “History of the World Part II” will consist of several sketches taking place at different periods throughout human history. Brooks stars in each episode alongside Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, and Ike Barinholtz, but each episode will also feature special guest stars from a stacked lineup...
