  Police Constable : Inspector, there were two bodies found, one was Mr Linton, the other identified as Mrs Stockley from the village.

  Police Inspector : Mrs Linton, do you know Mrs Stockley ?

  [Jean nods] 

  Police Inspector : However did the fire start, it must have been lightning.

  Jean Linton : [nods in agreement, knowingly]  Lightning, yes, lightning.

• Jean Linton : [confronting her husband's mistress]  Mrs Stockley, I've come for my property, my stolen property.

  Valerie Stockley : [casually]  If you are referring to your husband he isn't here.

  Jean Linton : No I'm not referring to him, but the twenty pounds he stole from me to give to you. I've read your letter asking him for the money.

  Jean Linton : [pauses, as Valerie looks stunned]  My husband doesn't have a penny to his name . All he eats, drinks and spends comes from me.

  Jean Linton : If you had wanted the money so badly, you should have gone out to earn it.

  [pauses, looks Valerie up and down] 

  Jean Linton : You look the type.

  Jean Linton : You can keep my husband, and the twenty pounds. I'm finished with keeping him; you can support him from now on.

  [leaves through the front door, Valerie looks stunned] 

• Mrs. O'Brien : Surely you know about Patrick? Patrick's the ghost that lives here.

  Jean Linton : Huh. What sort of nonsense is this?

  Mrs. O'Brien : It's not nonsense, ma'am. It's fact. You'll find out when you've lived here. Strange things happen around here. Things move, for no reason at all. Bells ring, and nobody rings them. It's the little people, ma'am, like we have at home in Ireland.

• David Linton : You certainly make it clear who owns this house and who is the lodger, don't you?

  Jean Linton : You shouldn't have forced me to say this, but a lodger usually pays for his keep. So far, you haven't contributed one single penny!
