Ryan Murphy’s latest network offering, Doctor Odyssey, brings viewers into the well-loved world of medical professionals through a unique lens, as this medical team works and lives on a cruise ship.
The ABC medical drama — created by Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken — stars Joshua Jackson as Max, luxury cruise ship The Odyssey’s newest and seemingly overqualified doctor. Max joins the cruise’s two long-time, skeptical nurses on the medical team, Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale).
When Doctor Odyssey was first announced, the premise of American Horror Story mastermind Murphy’s next series was largely kept under wraps. Would there be a twist in store? Would the cruise ship be not what it seems? Not until the trailer dropped last month did viewers get a synopsis and first look, and begin to understand what the prolific showrunner really had in store. It’s week two of the maiden voyage for Doctor Odyssey, and fans of the new medical drama are in for a change of pace when Thursday’s (October 3) new episode debuts on ABC. While we still don’t know whether there’s a big twist on the horizon, some details about what’s next are starting to come through. This week, the newest episode is called “Singles Week,” which reflects the theme-cruise-of-the-week styling of The Odyssey, the ship at the center of the show. The logline for the episode reads, “It’s Singles Week on The Odyssey, and lust is in the air. As Max (Joshua Jackson), Tristan (Sean Teale), and Avery (Phillipa Soo) navigate their relationship, the crew fends off advances from passengers. With rising desire and quickly spreading ailments, Max and the team rush to restore order.” As we’ve already seen from the preview and teaser photos of the new episode,...

We have some big guest stars coming in Doctor Odyssey, and the show is wasting no time in showcasing some of them. Episode 2 brings us the Queen of Country Pop and a former Glee star.
Yes, it’s all about Shania Twain and Chord Overstreet in the new episode. It’s Single’s Week on the cruise ship, and that means the individuals are looking for some passion and a few flings. Now the crew will need to navigate around these guests in lust.
Avery isn’t interested in Chord Overstreet in Doctor Odyssey Season 1, Episode 2
The promo for the episode gives us a look at things to come in the rest of the season. That’s pretty standard for the trailer for the second episode of shows, especially a new show. They need to entice us to stick around, right?

ABC‘s newest medical drama, Doctor Odyssey, made quite a splash with audiences when it premiered last week. The procedural, which was bookended by the Season 8 premiere of 9-1-1 and the Season 21 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, earned over 4.2 million viewers when its first episode aired on Thursday (September 26). The pilot for the episode answered some questions and raised others (including a few lingering fan theories) about the newest Ryan Murphy series, which we’ll have to watch to see if it answers. One question we do already know the answer to is this: When is the next episode of Doctor Odyssey airing? That’d be this Thursday (October 3) at 9/8c. The second episode of the series is titled “Singles Week” as a nod to its central storyline. The logline for the episode is: “It’s Singles Week on The Odyssey, and lust is in the air. Ryan Murphy’s new primetime series Doctor Odyssey set sail on Thursday, September 26. The show centers around Dr. Max, the hot new doctor who joins a luxury cruise line. He will work alongside Captain Massey and nurses Avery Morgan and Tristan Silva. The Odyssey cruise is described as heaven. But not everything is what it seems.
Something Sinister Aboard
The Odyssey looks like the ultimate cruise. Guests have once-in-a-lifetime experiences and are catered to around the clock. But that doesn’t mean accidents and injuries don’t happen.
Max (Joshua Jackson) and his team must save lives every waking hour. Avery (Phillipa Soo) and Tristan (Sean Teale) are also on the medical team.
The trio has to find a way to not mix personal with pleasure. The hard-working crew also gets to take breaks whenever the guests enjoy excursions. Captain Massey (Don Johnson) reminds them of their responsibility. They must provide the ultimate experience,...

“Welcome aboard The Odyssey.”
On Wednesday, Ryan Murphy, Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken asked audiences to investigate the macabre with their FX horror series, “Grotesquerie.” Shifting gears towards the more pleasant side of humanity, the same series creators premiered a new medical drama the following night called “Doctor Odyssey.” Starring Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, his Yale-educated doctor is tasked with handling emergency medical cases aboard a luxury cruise ship.
In the opening few minutes of the show’s premiere, Dr. Bankman is introduced getting dressed for his first day of work to the tune of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin’.” Taking on a new job can often be an intimidating endeavor, but this doctor likes to wear Hawaiian shirts, and you just know he’s easygoing. Post-covid, he traverses the next phase of his life by boarding The Odyssey, a beautifully designed and cultured cruise liner filled with honeymooners and vacationing retirees.

ABC’s Doctor Odyssey is making waves — but did it deliver the “big deck energy” it promised?
The modern-day Love Boat, which debuted on Thursday, stars Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman, the new onboard doctor of The Odyssey, a cruise ship helmed by Captain Massey (played by Miami Vice’s Don Johnson). But “Dr. Max” is no normal healthcare provider, he’s also a hottie humanitarian whose exceptional resume includes experience with the Peace Corps and the United Nations. As TV fanatics gear up for another action-packed fall season, we’re geeking out about all the shows coming to our screens — both returning and new.
Doctor Odyssey is an interesting twist on the standard medical drama geared up to entertain today’s eclectic TV audience with a new premise.
While we’ve had plenty of medical mysteries over the years, Doctor Odyssey will be the story of a second-chance doctor solving medical cases aboard a luxury cruise boat.
(Disney/Tina Thorpe)
Is that unique, or is it taking an already-done trope and trying to give it a new wig?
Doctor Odyssey: Knock-Off or Unique Premise?
News of Doctor Odyssey’s creation has been tight-lipped leading up to its ABC premiere on Thursdays at 9/8C starting September 26.
Unlike other shows, like High Potential, which aired promos months ahead of their releases, Doctor Odyssey kept its secrets tight until just a month ago.

The Doctor is in, and we're ready to see the many saves and medical emergencies. Doctor Odyssey arrives in less than a week, and the first full-length trailer is out.
We already knew to expect some top-named guest stars here and there. After all, the Queen of Country Pop is going to be in at least one episode, and the latest trailer gives us the same clip from the teaser. We still have no idea who Shania Twain is going to play.

John Stamos, Cheyenne Jackson, and more joining the guest list on Doctor Odyssey

In The Return, a soldier comes home after being away for many years at war, looking haggard and exhausted. His friends don’t recognize him, he has a difficult time readjusting to society and even his wife doesn’t seem to know who he is. It seems a fairly familiar story, except that the main characters’ names are Odysseus and Penelope, the setting is the island of Ithaca and the war took place in Troy. Yes, this film — receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before a theatrical release later this year — is an adaptation of a section of Homer’s The Odyssey.

Homer’s The Iliad and The Odyssey are foundational works of Western literature, yet they are seldom adapted for the screen today. The Iliad was last made into a mainstream Hollywood blockbuster in 2004’s “Troy.” But you must go back to 1954 to find an equivalent for The Odyssey in “Ulysses” starring Kirk Douglas. Since then, The Odyssey has had some notable television adaptations: 1968’s Italian production “Odissea” (with Bekim Fehmiu and Irene Papas), 1997’s American production “The Odyssey” and 2013’s French production “Odysseus”.

When most people picture the classic tale of The Odyssey, what comes to mind are legendary beasts, miracles performed by gods, and fantastical voyages across the sea. But Uberto Pasolini’s new film The Return sets sail on a different course. It home sin only on the part of Homer’s epic poem where Odysseus at last reaches his destination of Ithaca after twenty years away at war.
We learn Odysseus fought bravely alongside other Greeks to vanquish the city of Troy. But the journey home proved an even greater challenge, with harrowing encounters with monsters and deities that delayed his family’s reunion for years more. Now at last a beaten man washes ashore on the island shores he once knew as king. But the kingdom he left behind has fallen into disarray.
The long-waiting and loyal Penelope struggles to govern in his absence, her rule continually under threat...

Toronto film festival: The English Patient co-stars come together for Uberto Pasolini’s new take on The Odyssey, a handsome misfire
There are no sirens, cyclops or six-headed monsters in Uberto Pasolini’s adaptation of The Odyssey. His film, The Return, skips most of the great big adventure at sea from Homer’s epic poem, which was previously translated to the big screen in 1955’s Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas.
Instead, Pasolini’s handsome, sombre and meditative take homes in on Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche’s faces. The camera loves them. It barely leaves them, watching for the light from the setting sun or crackling fire as it searches across their weary brows or sullen cheeks, or when a painterly circle of smoke orbits their heads like thrones.

When he introduced the world premiere of “The Return” at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday night, director Uberto Pasolini pointed out that nobody has made a film adaptation of Homer’s epic poem “The Odyssey” since 1955, when Italian director Mario Camerini made a version with Kirk Douglas as Odysseus. He skipped over a couple of other versions as well as works by Theo Angelopoulos and the Coen brothers that borrowed elements from Homer’s tale, but the point remains: One of the first great works of Western literature is not marketable IP these days.
But it’s still a hell of a tale, as “The Return” proves. The film leaves out the first two-thirds of the book, the part that includes the cyclops and the Sirens and the six-headed sea monster and lots of meddling by the gods. Instead, it sticks with the final section in which Odysseus returns...

Every American soldier has left Afghanistan, but that doesn’t mean Afghanistan has left them. Jon Shenk and Bonni Cohen’s heartfelt documentary gives new meaning to the term “forever war” by showing the lasting impact that multiple deployments have had on a trio of Navy SEALs still struggling to truly come home years after retiring from the military. “In Waves and War” — the title is taken from a passage in “The Odyssey” about moving on from suffering in order to embark on a new adventure — focuses on, and ultimately becomes part of, an emerging movement to treat post-traumatic stress disorder via two hallucinogens that have shown remarkable results when taken in tandem.

The Navy SEALs who are the subjects of “In Waves and War” aren’t just used to suffering. Many long thought that bearing the emotional cost of suffering was their only option. Multiple tours in Afghanistan and Iraq over years left unseen scars as wall as visible ones, and Ptsd can be so intractable an enemy, despite multiple therapies and prescription drugs, that a lot are left to think that just “bearing it” is all they can do.
Shenk and Cohen‘s film makes a powerful case that there may be another option: Psychedelic drugs, not approved for use in the U.S., may help...

As we roll into fall, we’re starting to get trailers for the new and returning shows. The trailer for the new Ryan Murphy medical drama Doctor Odyssey is here, and we couldn’t be more excited. Okay, maybe we are a little more excited because Shania Twain will guest star.
A rocket scientist doesn’t impress her much, but what about the doctor of a luxury cruise liner? That’s something we’ll need to find out.
Shaina Twain’s character details on Doctor Odyssey haven’t been revealed yet
In some bad news, we have no idea who Shania Twain will play. It is possible that she will play herself, which will be a great way to start off the season. It wouldn’t be the first time Murphy’s dramas have brought real-life people into the story. 911 brought in a Bachelor crossover during the seventh season.

Joss Whedon has had a dramatic career trajectory in Hollywood. But before his rise to fame after the huge reception of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he was just a normal writer trying to etch a place for himself in Tinsel Town. In the 80s, he started lending his scriptwriting skills to blockbusters such as Alien: Resurrection and Twister, to name a few.

Later that same week, Biles became the first-ever woman to land a Yurchenko double-pike at the competition, earning her a 5th skill named after her. Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin has revealed that the previously scrapped spinoff Ten Thousand Ships is being revived, and Eboni Booth is on board for the pilot.
The author took to his blog to congratulate Booth on winning a Pulitzer Prize for her play Primary Truth and dropped the news that she was working on the prequel series.
“She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for Ten Thousand Ships, a Game of Thrones spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar,” Martin wrote. “We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles.”

Brian Helgeland was one of the writers working on a Game of Thrones spinoff that George R.R. Martin signed off on but one that HBO did not pick up.
In a new interview, Helgeland discusses why the tentatively titled 10,000 Ships series didn’t happen despite his saying his script “came out great.”
“I think they felt the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original. That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is ever dead,” Helgeland said in an interview with Inverse.
The Man on Fire and L.A Confidential writer says his script, “was based on Queen Nymeria and this little blurb about her that was in a Westeros encyclopedia. Brian Helgeland is a popular name in the industry for his works in films like Mystic River and L.A. Confidential. The latter even blessed him with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. The renowned screenwriter and producer was near to having his Game of Thrones spin-off series. However, the Ten Thousand Ships series never got a green light from HBO.

The idea of Brian Helgeland’s Ten Thousand Ships was planned to be based on the mythological story of Moses. The structure and tonality of the story would have been very different from the main Game of Thrones series. Although Helgeland has stated that his script is still there and HBO can pick it if they want, it is highly unlikely due to the present political milieu of the world.

All "Game of Thrones" fans know the words Valar Morghulis, a Valyrian saying for "All men must die." That phrase almost proved prophetic when it came to HBO's attempts to whittle down the many spin-off shows at various stages in development over the years. Although "House of the Dragon" survived the culling to earn a second season, several others -- the Jon Snow-centric series, an untitled prequel starring Naomi Watts (which actually filmed a full pilot episode before being scrapped), and even a show set in the slums of King's Landing, Flea Bottom -- were doomed to the chopping block.
One of the more fascinating concepts, however, involved a famous figure from Westerosi history known as Nymeria. Titled "Ten Thousand Ships", this, too, never coalesced and we've never known why. Luckily, the folks over at Inverse recently had the chance to sit down with writer Brian Helgeland, known for "A Knight's Tale,...

Brian Helgeland’s Game of Thrones spinoff, Ten Thousand Ships, is getting docked as HBO shelves the project before it can set sail. Helgeland, the director behind films like L.A. Confidential and A Knight’s Tale and screenwriter for the Tony Scott-directed crime drama Man on Fire, spoke with Inverse about the defunct project, saying it would have focused on Queen Nymeria, the warrior-queen who led the Rhoynar refugees to Dorne.
Helgeland speaks with Inverse and makes Ten Thousand Ships sound biblical in scope and story. He likens Queen Nymeria’s tale to the story of Moses, with survivors from a ravaged country setting sail for a new home.
