The prolific lyricist was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the tunes “People Alone” from The Competition (1980) and “Up Where We Belong” from An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), the latter of which he won. In 2006, Jennings was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

With the original iterations of several Disney characters now in the public domain, the door has been opened to parodies featuring twisted new versions of them.
One of the most attention-grabbing parodies is the upcoming horror movie Screamboat which, in case it wasn't obvious, is based on the iconic Mickey Mouse predecessor, Steamboat Willie.
Directed by Steven Lamorte, who previously helmed 2022's The Mean One, a horror based on Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, the teaser trailer suggests the project will make slasher fans happy.
According to the synopsis, "[Screamboat] follows a group of New Yorkers on a late-night ferry ride that turns deadly when a mischievous mouse begins a rampage, targeting unsuspecting passengers. The unlikely crew must band together to thwart the murderous menace before their relaxing commute turns into a nightmare."
You can watch the newly released trailer below (via FearHQ.com) ahead of the movie's planned 2025 release.

Production on “Screamboat” is chugging right along.
Director Steven Lamorte stepped away from an editing session to update IndieWire on his forthcoming horror comedy, expected in theaters early next year from distributors DeskPop Entertainment and Iconic Events Releasing. The slasher spoof plans to commandeer Disney’s “Steamboat Willie” from 1928 — now that its black-and-white versions of Mickey and Minnie Mouse are in the public domain. “Our movie, while it is bloody and gory and raunchy, it really is a love letter to this character,” said Lamorte, who co-wrote the script with Matthew Garcia-Dunn. “As 2024 got closer and closer, it seemed like the copyright was really going to lapse. After the success of Ron Howard's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (a hit so big even the 2018 animated remake broke box office records), it was a no-brainer for Hollywood to look to other Dr. Seuss books for inspiration for its next success. DreamWorks quickly set its sights on "The Cat in the Hat" and greenlit a live-action adaptation with a budget over $100 million, tapping another Canadian-born comedic A-lister to star in the film -- in this case, Mike Myers, an actor who was at the peak of his career, starring in both the "Austin Powers" trilogy And "Shrek" at the same time. The 2003 film also starred Spencer Breslin and Dakota Fanning, the former a popular actor with kids at the time thanks to "The Santa Clause 2" and the latter a phenomenal young actor too good for this disappointing project.

Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.
Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.
The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.
He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Fans will be surprised to hear that Jim Carrey’s comedy film, Ace Ventura, and Anthony Hopkins’ thriller, The Silence of the Lambs, have a weird connection. Hopkins once revealed to Carrey that they had both used the same method to bring their respective characters to the screen. While Carrey’s titular character was an animal detective, Hopkins’ Hannibal Lecter was a serial killer who ate his victims.

The Thor actor went on to bag the Best Actor Award at the 64th Academy Awards for his performance in the film. The Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling is particularly tough to predict early on because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in two stages. First, upwards of 15 members of the branch who attend special screenings cast preferential ballots with the top 10 vote-getters moving on to the second stage (it was a lucky seven till 2021). Those members from the first stage and any other members who either attend screenings of excerpts from these semi-finalists or attest that they have seen them cast preferential ballots and the top five films are nominated; that is up from three in years past. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscars Best Makeup and Hairstyling predictions.).
As a result of being well-received at these screenings, titles that had not been part of the conversation in the first few months of awards season end up as nominees. For example, the Swedish films “A Man Called Ove...

For more than 40 years now, moviegoers have lined up to see the spectacle of people being slaughtered by a psycho with a chainsaw, a psycho in a Halloween mask, a psycho in a goalie mask, a psycho with burnt skin and a striped shirt and fedora, or a psycho with S&m nails in his face. So why not a psycho Winnie the Pooh?
“Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey” raised a few hackles — otherwise known as free publicity — for having the scuzzy temerity to take a couple of beloved children’s characters and place them at the center of a slasher film. Yet the stunt concept was about all there was to it. The movie, made on a budget of $50,000, was too logy and inept to be a real scandal, or any sort of theatrical sleeper hit. Bill Hader or, at least, an animated character that he voices, will don a red-and-white striped top hat in a new adaptation of Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat.”

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Dr. Seuss Enterprises officially announced the casting on Monday.
“The Cat in the Hat” will open in theaters on March 6, 2026. Although the book is a children’s classic, it has a checkered cinematic legacy. Just months after Winnie the Pooh entered the public domain in 2022, Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios made waves for producing Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, a slasher film depicting A.A. Milne’s beloved characters of the Hundred Acre Wood as feral, blood-hungry killers. Despite very, very negative critical reception (it has a 3% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film made $5 million at the box office on a $50,000 budget, and led to other planned horror films featuring children’s characters now in the public domain like Bambi, Pinocchio, and the characters of Peter Pan.
Now, a grand cinematic crossover event with these characters is imminent: Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble will hit theaters in 2025. As reported by Variety, the Avengers-style low-budget horror crossover will see Winnie the Pooh join villainous forces with Bambi,...

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

“Maestro,” “Saltburn” and “Barbie” have won the feature-film awards from the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild, which gave out its annual awards on Sunday evening in Los Angeles.
“Maestro” won awards the two Muahs categories that most closely correspond to the Oscars’ Best Makeup and Hairstyling category: Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Period and/or Character Make-Up.
“Saltburn” won for Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Contemporary Hair Styling, while “Barbie” took the award for Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling.
The wins were significant for “Maestro,” which has seen its status as a frontrunner for the Oscar makeup award falter as it lost at BAFTA and the Critics Choice Awards to “Poor Things” and “Barbie,” respectively.
In the first 15 years of the Muahs awards, which ran between 1999 and 2003 and then returned in 2013, the winner for period make-up went on to win the Oscar eight times, while...

Despite controversy over its use of a prosthetic nose to turn Bradley Cooper into Jewish composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein, “Maestro” has emerged as the Oscar front-runner for Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Will it win first at the Make-Up Artist and Hair Stylist Guild Awards? It has three nominations there: Best Period and/or Character Makeup, Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling and Best Special Makeup Effects.
Based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users, “Maestro” will win two out of the three. For Period and/or Character Makeup it’s up against two of its Oscar rivals, “Poor Things” and “Oppenheimer,” with “Poor Things” posing the greater threat. “Maestro” is backed by seven out of nine Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets as of this writing. The other two are betting on “Poor Things.”

We haven’t seen the last of Dr. Robotnik.
Jim Carrey will reprise his role as the mad scientist with the formidable facial hair in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” The news comes despite the fact that (and here there be spoilers) the second film in the series ended with Dr. Robotnik falling from a giant robot to the ground below, a potentially fatal tumble. In the film’s post-credits scene, however, it is revealed that Dr. Robotnik’s body has not been found, setting the stage for Sonic’s main antagonist to make a dramatic return.
The combined global box office for “Sonic the Hedgehog” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” stands at $725.2 million, hence the enthusiasm of Paramount, the studio behind the video game adaptations, for another installment in the franchise. The studio is also making a spin-off series, “Knuckles,'” that will premiere on Paramount+. Carrey’s return was...

Following its Dec. 19 premiere, Disney’s “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” series officially cracked Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming chart during the Dec. 18-24 viewing window, landing at No. 4 on the Originals list with 572 million minutes viewed.
Disney released only the first two 40-minute episodes of the new series during this interval, meaning “Percy Jackson & the Olympians” had just 80 available minutes for viewing in comparison to “Reacher” (520), “The Crown “(3,424), and “My Life with the Walter Boys” (446). Nielsen counts minutes viewed across all episodes of a series in its Top 10 ranker.
Also making its debut on the Originals chart is Peacock’s “Dr. Death.” The series opened at No. 8 on the list with 302 million minutes viewed across all 16 episodes. The streaming gods have smiled on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
The Disney+ series based on author Rick Riordan’s best-selling books opened to a good-sized audience in the week before Christmas. The first two episodes, which debuted the evening of Dec. 19, drew about 572 million minutes of watch time, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. With a combined run time of 80 minutes, that works out to about 7.15 million complete runs (or “views” as currently defined by much of the industry) of the two episodes in the United States.
Disney had earlier said that the first episode had earned 13.3 million views worldwide — equivalent to a little more than 505 million minutes — over its first six days. The Nielsen figures for the premiere put Percy Jackson ahead of Disney+’s last two Marvel premieres, Secret Invasion (461 million minutes) and season two of Loki (446 million), in total viewing time.
Prime Video’s Reacher moved up to the overall No.

If you had your TV on this weekend and weren’t watching football, chances are decent that you might have caught a recent hit movie instead. There’s nothing unusual in that, but the difference is that not only does that hit-watching possibility extend to VOD rentals and downloads, but also when it comes to new picks at Netflix.
With a slew of newly available titles from four other top studios, the streamer (with “The Equalizer 3” as #1) is increasingly relying on non-original feature film product to earn those eyeballs. It’s not surprising that Denzel Washington’s latest “Equalizer” effort is #1. Netflix has become Sony’s streaming service, and four months after its theatrical release, it’s a quite recent film available for subscribers.
It is noteworthy, however, how often Warner Bros. is turning over key films to the streamer that they might otherwise have exclusively played on their own Max service.

Zack Snyder’s “Rebel Moon: Part One — Child of Fire” replaced “Leave the World Behind” as No. 1 this week on Netflix’s Top 10 Movie list. But the big news here is that Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro,” considered a prime awards contender and given a nationwide, four-week theatrical release, dropped off the list after only four days.
Among new releases on PVOD, “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” (Lionsgate) placed No. 1 at Vudu and Google Play, second at iTunes (where the reduced-price “Oppenheimer” returned to No. 1). “Trolls Band Together” (Universal) placed No. 2 at Vudu, but lower elsewhere.
It may be unfair to judge the response equivalent to broader interest genre titles like the sci-fi “Rebel Moon.” We don’t expect highly acclaimed specialized titles to compete on equal footing in theatrical box office lists.

Bruce Willis Net Worth (Picture Credit: IMDb)
Bruce Willis is grabbing headlines these days, thanks to the Christmas season and his classic film Die Hard. The debate about whether the action film is a Christmas holiday film has already been discussed a zillion times, but now the superstar has himself ended the debate.
The film was released in the summer of 1988, and despite being an action film, it motivated the audience to enjoy it as a Christmas classic since the film dealt with a plot that unfolds on Christmas Eve.
During a recent conversation, Peter Billingsley, the actor from ‘A Christmas Story,’ tried convincing the cinematographer of Die Hard that the film was a Christmas film. However, years ago, during a debate, Bruce Willis ended the debate by saying it is not a Christmas film but is goddamn a Bruce Willis film!

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” (Tas Rights Management), with three added songs, came out for rent (at $19.89) on the singer’s birthday (an unusual Wednesday release for PVOD). It scored well, with two #1s (both Google Play and Vudu), as well as iTunes initially. But in a surprise, “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Paramount for Apple) is back atop iTunes, while holding on well elsewhere.
Both #1s are noteworthy, as well as another factor: An unexpected decision from Universal. Normally, even as a decent performer (it has grossed $88 million), “Trolls Band Together” would have come to PVOD after three weeks in theaters. But it’s actually only available on December 19, after its fifth weekend in theaters. That took it away from competition until close to Christmas.
Curiously, “Eras” at this point is not for download, with no word on whether that will be added for last-minute gift giving. It’s...

Listening to favorite Christmas songs is a vital part of the entire holiday season. Our new photo gallery ranks the Top 30 greatest tunes from worst to best. We only had two rules for assembling our list: each song can only be featured once and the same goes for each artist.
We chose what is considered the most definitive version of each song as performed by the singers most associated with the tunes. Of course, certain people most known for Christmas had to be included — Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Judy Garland, Perry Como, Andy Williams, Mariah Carey and more.
Among our list you’ll find Rock and Roll Hall of Famers such as Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Darlene Love, Brenda Lee and The Eagles. And we didn’t forget songs that originated from great TV specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

The star of one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time has waded into one of the holiday season’s most divisive annual debates: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?
Peter Billingsley says yes — and in the season finale episode of his A Cinematic Christmas Journey podcast, which releases Dec. 15, he does his best to convince Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont.
“I mean, they didn’t think Die Hard was a Christmas movie. They happened to set it then, but the filmmakers weren’t intending that,” Billingsley explains. Instead, like many classics over the decades, its meaning to fans evolved. “This movie creates its own life, is in the culture and, over time, people discover it. It’s pretty great to see how that life can move in ways that the filmmakers never intended, or even ever imagined.” (Watch an exclusive clip from the episode below.)

Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.
By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

The best way to enjoy the holiday season? Take some guilty pleasure in these fun rom-coms! Some of these will warm you up inside out. ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Romantic comedies with a holiday or Christmas theme have always been enjoyable. There’s a certain flair to them. They’ve always been a trend and are almost on par with classic holiday films like “It’s a Wonderful Life” and “Meet Me in St. Louis.” Even better now — with streamers like Hallmark and Netflix, we have mass production of rom-coms and almost each one ends up being more enjoyable than the other — think “Love is in the Air” or perhaps Emma Robert’s “Holidate.” So, if you’ve run out of rom-coms to enjoy this holiday season, we’ve got you covered.

All Jack Frost Films Ever Made(Photo Credit –IMDb)
Santa Claus is and will always be the face of Yuletide. He’s an old, polite, white-bearded man who gives everyone gifts; what’s not to love there? So, it is safe to say no one can replace the good old Santa Claus. However, there are some Christmas figures that do not nearly get as much love from the world as Santa, despite being as interesting, if not more, than Father Christmas. One such character is Jack Frost.
While technically not a ‘Christmas figure,’ Jack Frost has always been associated with the festival. He’s essentially the face of winter, the personification of cold, and the guy who gives everyone the frosty fingers and snowed-in days. The first recorded mention of Jack Frost in literature was in 1734 in a book called “Round About Our Coal Fire, or Christmas Entertainments.”

Voices That Bring Anime to Life: Celebrating the Best Anime Voice Actors of All Time ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Japan takes its anime voice actors very seriously to the point where they have special voice acting academies and schools to train them to master their art completely. This is exactly why these professionals are so versatile and have such natural, golden voices. In fact, a large number of avid anime fans prefer watching anime subs rather than anime dubs exactly because of this. Some Dub actors tend to exaggerate and overact as a way to compensate for the inconsistency in translations and syncing. Native voice actors retain the ‘authenticity’ that dubs lack.
The authenticity of the subs is attributed to the voice actors’ talent and how natural they are with their jobs. Here are some of the best Japanese anime voice actors of all time.

A Complete Guide to the Best Grinch Movies and TV Shows Out There(Photo Credit –IMDb)
The grumpy Grinch, known for his dislike of all things Christmas, has always been a staple of mainstream media during the holidays, thanks to Dr. Suess’s children’s book “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” But it’s the young adults of this generation that relate to this green goblin more than children do. He’s a mean-spirited, cynical, and sarcastic creature who just does not get the appeal of Christmas. He doesn’t enjoy the racket that Christmas causes and prefers to be in a quiet, peaceful place instead. But when the folks of Whoville go too far with their festivities, he vows to destroy Christmas once and for all.
The Grinch is undeniably fascinating. There have been multiple adaptations of him across the film industry centering around the premise of him trying to ruin Christmas.

The PVOD debuts of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind,” high-profile movies adapted from adult-oriented bestsellers, are currently #1 on their respective platforms. Martin Scorsese’s film tops all PVOD charts, and the timely Long Island-set thriller co-produced by Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is #1 at Netflix.
Both films dislodged high-powered #1 titles. “Oppenheimer,” released four months after its theatrical run began, enjoyed two weeks in the top PVOD slot. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” the year’s #2 movie (behind “Barbie” and just ahead of Christopher Nolan’s historical epic) managed five days in the lead at Netflix after previous play, which included streaming on Peacock.
“Flower Moon” and “Leave the World Behind” each reflect the state of film platforming. Apple produced “Flower Moon” with Paramount handling theatrical distribution. It had a 46-day window before debuting on revenue-rich PVOD. At $19.99, Apple gets the lion’s share of rentals.

Eddie Murphy’s Candy Cane Lane is scoring high watch numbers for Prime Video. The new Christmas movie is something Murphy says hopes to be a new viewing tradition for audiences every holiday season. The review from our own Alex Maidy states that the movie is charming enough, saying, “Overall, Candy Cane Lane has its heart in the right place but tries to spread the story over too many subplots, which packs this overlong running time with too much to keep the attention of younger viewers and not enough consistency to engage with adults. This movie is far from tedious, but it could have been tighter and more focused on laughs.”
Murphy recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his new movie. It was inevitable that he would be talking about his upcoming legacy sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Kimmel complimented Murphy on aging really well, but inquired...

Exclusive: It’s the most wonderful time of the year — for Freeform, that is.
The network launched its beloved 25 Days of Christmas on December 1, and it is already reaping the benefits of audiences in the holiday spirit. Driven by the first three days of the month-long phenomenon, Freeform managed its most-watched week of the year in primetime and total day, according to Nielsen data.
Friday’s opening night run of Home Alone stole the show as the No. 1 cable movie of the week among adults 18-49.
So far, Freeform is taking the cake in December as the top cable entertainment network in primetime among adults 18-49, adults 18-34 and women 18-34, while ranking No. 2 with women 18-49 and men 18-49.
There is plenty of the month left, so these ratings could always change. But, Freeform isn’t alone in experiencing viewers’ appetite for holiday content. Several new holiday films have...

There might be numerous animated films out there, but nothing beats the charm of the good old classics ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Christmas is defined by a multitude of old family traditions — like making egg nog, matching ugly sweaters with loved ones, and decorating the Christmas tree. Add a great Christmas movie night to it, right next to your loved ones, and there’s probably no other activity in the world more beautiful to curl up to. While a few of us appreciate a good new holiday film like this year’s “Candy Cane Lane,” revisiting a few oldies is never a bad idea.
In this guide, we’ve got you a few classic animated films to watch this Christmas. They’re nostalgic. Some of them even felt scared as children! But the vibe was immaculate, and the goal is to help you recreate it. It’s even better if you...

Remember “Hunter Killer”?
To jog your memory, it was a 2018 Lionsgate release starring Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman in a story about the U.S. Navy rescuing a kidnapped Russian president. It eked out a domestic $14 million.
It debuted on Netflix last week. It is currently #4.
Also debuting was Todd Haynes’ “May December,” with Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton (the latter perhaps as familiar to Netflix subscribers as the two Oscar winning actresses because of his “Riverdale” fame).
It ranks #9 currently after three days, after peaking at #5.
That seems most significant in suggesting that studios have no one-size-fits-all strategy to maximize home viewing, and also emphasizing how key PVOD is to elevating revenues after theatrical release.
“May December” is one of the best reviewed films of 2023, with its already good awards prospects enhanced by key early awards last week. It had two weeks in theaters.
Yet despite its on-paper appeal,...
