Some people think Leonardo DiCaprio became a star when he acted in James Cameron’s Titanic. Others believe his stardom predated that movie when he starred opposite Claire Danes in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet. However, the movie that made him an up-and-comer is a film that seems to have been all but erased from his filmography: the 1995 drama The Basketball Diaries, a movie that teamed him with a young Mark Wahlberg, earned good reviews and became a VHS cult hit among teens of the nineties. Yet, it’s a tough film to find unless you’re willing to shell out big bucks for the long, out-of-print Blu-ray (never released in the U.S) or an old-school DVD. You won’t find it on streaming, and it remains an oddly obscure film considering how popular it was in the nineties. What gives?

For most performers, building up a resume of over 150 projects is something that takes an entire lifetime to achieve, but for James Franco that is a feat he has accomplished at just 45 years old. This Freaky Geek was catapulted to fame in one of biggest comic book franchises of all time before settling in to his role as a performer who can take on any genre and any film no matter how big or small. But with a tremendous rise at such a young age, sometimes you don’t make the best decisions. For Franco, those bad decisions would come to light on the very night of his greatest professional achievement and begin a downfall that is sadly all too common in today’s world. At one point putting out up to 12 projects a year, Franco has taken a backseat as allegations against him began to pile up. It is...

March 2022 is a great month for blonde women with cold, dead stares on Hulu.
With its list of new releases for March 2022, Hulu is highlighting two major original series ripped straight from the headlines. The first is The Dropout, which premieres on March 3. This show stars Amanda Seyfried (taking over from the previously cast Kate McKinnon) as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. This story about high-level corporate fraud is truly wild, enough so to accommodate several books, podcasts, and even an upcoming film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Hulu is certainly hoping its version is the definitive one.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

Charlie Lyne's documentary Beyond Clueless harks back to the classic teen movies that shaped the '90s.

So, here are 11 stars from some of our favourite '90s teen movies, and what they've gone on to do since:

This past weekend, James Franco showed his short film, titled, "Brad Renfro Forever" to a packed audience in the basement of the New Museum. The event, which was hosted by Artspace.com and The Thing Quarterly, was to pay tribute to Brad Renfro, the actor who passed away in early 2008 from a heroin overdose. The original plan was to include a psychic, presumably to contact his friend's spirit, but during the Q+A after the film screening Franco said he ultimately scrapped the idea because it didn't seem right.
The New Museum event marked the release of a limited edition switchblade with "Brad Renfro" in rainbow letters across the side and "Forever" in caps across the blade. The object d'art is a playful reference to "Deuces Wild," the boy gang film that Franco and Renfro starred in together a decade ago. In Franco's tribute film, "Brad Renfro Forever," we see...

James Franco Designs Brad Renfro Switchblade
James Franco has designed a limited edition switchblade in memory of Brad Renfro, the late actor who beat him to a lead role in 2002 movie Deuces Wild.
The 127 Hours star created the flick knife as "a metaphor for people that don't have control over their lives" following Renfro's death from an accidental heroin overdose in 2008.
Franco unveiled the $850 (£530) blade on Saturday at New York City's The New Museum, where he also screened his short film Brad Renfro Forever.
In the art-house movie, tattooist Mark Mahoney uses one of the special blades to etch 'Brad' into Franco's flesh, causing him to wince in agony and beg for a break in the middle of the session.
Franco tells the New York Daily News, "I didn't tell him (Mahoney) to hold back at all... I wish he'd gone deeper (because the carving is) pretty light."
Franco was particularly moved by the tragic star's death, telling Playboy magazine last year, "Heath Ledger died a week after Brad, and I feel Brad has been forgotten already. They didn't even mention his death at the Oscars that year."...

Rapper whose career included hit singles and acting roles
The rapper Heavy D, who has died suddenly aged 44, after collapsing at his home, was among a handful of hip-hop stars from the 1980s who successfully established a lasting career. Robert Pattinson turned down a role in James Franco's tribute to Brad Renfro saying he 'didn't see the point'. Franco, "127 Hours" star, who was recently slammed for a lack luster hosting role at the Oscars, will debut his movie "Rebel" at the Venice Biennale art festival in Italy. The movie is a tribute to Brad Renfro, the young actor who beat Franco to a lead role in the movies "Deuces Wild" in 2002. He died from an accidental heroin overdose, in January 2008. Franco, who carved the name 'Brad' into his shoulder' told Playboy magazine " Heath Ledger died a week after Brad, and I feel Brad has been forgotten already. Franco To Debut Renfro Tribute At Venice Biennale
Movie star James Franco is making an arthouse film tribute to the late actor who beat him to a lead role in 2002 movie Deuces Wild.
The 127 Hours star will debut his movie Rebel - about Brad Renfro - at the upcoming Venice Biennale art festival in Italy, and he hopes the project will remind film fans of how great the tragic star was.
Franco, who carved the name 'Brad' into his shoulder, tells Playboy magazine, "Heath Ledger died a week after Brad, and I feel Brad has been forgotten already. They didn't even mention his death at the Oscars that year."
And Franco admits he had hoped that Twilight star Robert Pattinson would agree to be a part of the arty tribute piece.
He adds, "Some of the best contemporary artists alive - Paul McCarthy, Douglas Gordon, Ed Ruscha, Harmony Korine - worked on different sections.
"I wanted Robert Pattinson to be in the project, but when Harmony contacted him and told him the concept, Rob said, 'I don't get the point!'"
Renfro died from an accidental heroin overdose in January, 2008.

James Franco's loyalty of his pal, the late Brad Renfro, is displayed on a giant Billboard. The actor's latest art project called "Rebel" shows a black and white picture of him with his right arm being etched with the word "Brad" using a switchblade.
The billboard which is sponsored by Gucci is part of his upcoming art exhibition in honor of James Dean at the Venice Biennale. The particular art piece is named "Rebel" after Dean's 1955 film "Rebel Without a Cause".
Connecting the dots, Franco has been the spokesmodel for Gucci's men's fragrance for a while now and had once played Dean in the late actor's biopic. Renfro died in 2008 of a heroin overdose at the age of 25. He and Franco starred together in "Deuces Wild".

Hollywood heartthrob James Franco has turned himself into art work to pay tribute to Hollywood icon James Dean. The Oscar nominated actor who shot to fame playing the ''Rebel Without A Cause'' star in a 2001 TV bio-pic, got a body carving dedicated to his ''Deuces Wild'' co-star Brad Renfro, as part of the exhibition in Venice Biennale. The 33-year-old got Renfro''s name carved into his right arm with a switchblade, documenting the process in photography and film, reported Los Angeles Times online. Renfro, who died in 2008 at the age of 25 of a heroin overdose, reprised the character played by Sal Mineo in the original film. Franco, who had a hand in the other artists'' projects, says that the carving itself could be seen as one of the show''s more permanent artworks. This isn''t the only Dean-related project coming up for Franco as he is getting ready...

James Franco takes his art seriously, wearing his passion intelligence on his sleeve. Underneath his sleeve, he takes his art even more seriously -- and is passionate to the extreme.
Franco is participating in an art installation at the Venice Biennale to honor James Dean, the man he played in a 2001 TV movie that won him a Golden Globe. According to the Los Angeles Times, for this installation, Franco will take part in a re-examination of that TV film and display his own work, which he bled for... quite literally.
On display will be a video Franco shot of himself having his "Deuces Wild" co-star Brad Renfro's name being carved into his arm; Renfro died in 2008 of a heroin overdose.
This isn't the only Dean-related project coming up for Franco; he'll direct a biopic of Sal Mineo, Dean's Oscar-nominated co-star from "Rebel Without A Cause."

With the Academy Awards airing this Sunday, much attention is being placed on the show's young hosts, actors Anne Hathaway and James Franco.
We think they'll make a great team since their careers have followed such a shockingly similar path.
So similar, in fact, that we decided to put them head-to-head in a career-off of epic proportions. Which of these performers has what it takes to win?
Short-Lived TV Show
Franco: "Freaks & Geeks" is the landmark chronicle of life among outcast high schoolers in 1980s Michigan. Besides launching Franco, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, and Seth Rogen, the Judd Apatow-produced 18-episode run is one of the most beloved in TV history.
Hathaway: Running in the same 1999 TV season as "Freaks" was Fox's "Get Real," about a San Francisco family that also included future Facebook founder Jesse Eisenberg. It had a 22-episode run.
Winner: Franco, by a mile… make that several million miles.

So right around Oscar season, when people are pushing for Natalie Portman's Black Swan performance to take home the statue, here comes the trailer for the long-held Extramarital Sex 2: Deuces Wild. Oh, sorry, The Other Woman.
Directed by Don Roos, a slow-burn dude whose credits are actually relatively diverse (The Opposite of Sex, Happy Endings, Marley & Me, wrote the script for Boys On The Side), The Other Woman revolves around the progression of Natalie Portman stealing Lisa Kudrow's husband, marrying him, having a kid with him, losing the kid, and then getting all up on Lisa Kudrow's kid. You know, the one she had with her ex-husband who was stolen by Natalie Portman.

Why, why, when the Weinstein Company has at last pulled itself from the brink of bankruptcy (culminating in the laying off 11% of staff back in 2008, which this unfortunate former Weinstein intern was present for) are they making the sh*ttiest deal ever with the devil? In this case, the devil = Miramax.
The two have joined forces to "create sequels to some of Miramax's best-known properties," i.e. Rounders, Bad Santa, and... yep, that Gwynnie-in-drag period movie that bored us at age 13 when our moms rented it. Not sure why Shakespeare In Love 2: Deuces Wild would appeal to anyone, frankly, but hey.

Lost in Translation, the fantastic Sofia directed/Bill Murray ripped off by the Academy movie was my favorite movie of 2003. She went on to direct Marie Antoinette (never saw it) and now she's got a brand new movie coming out soon that stars Stephen Dorff. You probably just spit your coffee out all over your desk so I'll give you a second to clean it up.That's right, Stephen Dorff, the actor who has that one breakout performance somewhere inside of him. The actor who always looks as if he just murdered a prostitute and somehow managed to put her inside the trunk of your car. The man who fought Blade. The man who led a gang of street toughs in "Deuces Wild". The man who starred alongside Christian Slater and Tara Reid in "Alone in the Dark".Sofia Coppola's new movie "Somewhere" features the actor we've come to call The Dorffster.

After all these years the Boondock Saints sequel is finally coming out. After years of rumors and all the die-hard fan’s heartaches, it’s now actually making it’s way to the big screen. In light of this, here’s what one of the film’s stars Norman Reedus had to say about the original, the sequel and what can be expected.
How was Comic Con?
Norman Reedus: Comic Con was nuts! I mean when we got on stage there was a lot of screaming people and the line for our panel was like a mile long.
Did you know before how die-hard some fans are? There are some insane ones.
Norman Reedus: Yeah, I have had experiences with people coming up to me with tattoos on their arms and some crazy stuff. I knew that we were in for quite a ride.
Yeah, those fans are...

Over the last several years, films like "Pineapple Express" and the "Spider-Man" series have made him one of the most in-demand movie stars in the business — now James Franco is making an unusual move by setting his next role in ... "General Hospital"?
The 31-year-old actor has signed on to play a mysterious character on the 46-year-old ABC soap opera, in a story arc that begins November 20 — the same time as TV's all-important sweeps period. Franco's recurring role on the daily soap is expected to last for two months.
The move is a bit of a head-scratcher for several reasons, the most obvious being that Franco's film career has never been hotter than it is right now, coming off the back-to-back blockbusters "Pineapple Express" and Oscar-nominated "Milk.

How you doin'? De Matteo set as 'Joey' sister
After a lengthy search, Drea De Matteo of The Sopranos fame has landed the role of Joey Tribbiani's sister on NBC's upcoming Friends spinoff series, Joey. The comedy, from Warner Bros. TV, centers on the relationship between Joey (Matt LeBlanc), who moves to Los Angeles, and his sister Gina (De Matteo), a hairdresser who lives with her son. Probably smarter than Joey, Gina has a way with men, much like Joey has with women. She's a strong woman who isn't afraid to speak her mind. De Matteo is best known for her role on HBO's cult mob drama The Sopranos, on which she plays Christopher's (Michael Imperioli) fiancee, Adriana, who is recruited by the FBI. Her new gig on Joey will not interfere with her contractual obligations to the 10-episode sixth and final season of David Chase's hit series, sources said. De Matteo, whose credits also include Swordfish and Deuces Wild, next appears in Go Go Tales and Assault on Precinct 13.
