Sean Penn and Tom Hanks have a few things in common. Both of them are American actors, have starred in countless breathtaking films, and both of them, being straight, have played a gay character in their respective careers which got them an Oscar each. For Sean Penn it was the 2008 biographical drama, Milk, and for Tom Hanks it was 1993’s legal drama film, Philadelphia.

While they both have similar experiences of playing a gay role, both actors came out with a different outlook on the whole thing. While Tom Hanks believes gay characters should be played by gay actors, Sean Penn indirectly counters his point of view calling it a tremendous overreach.

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve recently shared a positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for a third movie, confirming that the script for an adaptation of Dune: Messiah is officially in the works.
Though the filmmaker hasn't full committed to helming the project, we'd be very surprised if he didn't return to finish his take on this saga - although, if and when he does, he won't actually consider it a trilogy.
“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve says of the first two movies during an interview with Vanity Fair. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there,...

Although Dune: Part Two didn't reach $1 billion at the global box office as some had predicted (always a long shot in the current climate), it did pass $700 million worldwide, meaning a third film based on Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune: Messiah, always seemed likely.
Part Three still hasn't been officially greenllt by the studio, but director Denis Villeneuve has now shared a very positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for the final chapter.
While speaking to Variety at TIFF, the filmmaker confirmed that the script for Dune: Part Three is officially "in the works."

This is obviously a strong indication that Villeneuve intends to return to complete the trilogy, but he hasn't always sounded too certain about it.

The Boys on "The Boys" have been through a lot over four seasons, enduring battles with long-lost frozen superheroes, the horrors of Homelander (Antony Starr), and now a potential supe virus. But for the most part, they've kept their appearances the same. Annie (Erin Moriarty) doesn't wear her Starlight costume as often, of course, and Butcher (Karl Urban) looks a little more grizzled, but generally, the brutality of their existence hasn't impacted their looks. Except for Mother's Milk, played by Laz Alonso, whose looks have changed quite a bit, especially with the most recent season.
In fact, Mm's appearance changed so much between seasons 3 and 4 that some fans actually thought that the character had been recast, though in actuality Alonso had simply undergone a major transformation. Firewalk Studios’ Concord was launched on August 23, 2024, on PlayStation 5 and PC. The game took eight whole years to make, and only 11 days later, Sony shut it down. This makes it one of the swiftest closures for a game in recent memory.
A combination of underwhelming player numbers, monetization strategy, and a saturated market led to its swift demise. But there may have been signs pointing to this from the beginning. Firewalk’s monetization decisions and the $40 price tag can give us a little insight as to why exactly it all went wrong.
Concord‘s Spectacular Failure Is One For The History Books
Right from the start, Concord was fighting an uphill battle. The game’s trailer, released in May 2024 during PlayStation’s State of Play, was impressive, but only visually. Fans compared it to other games at the time and noted that it lacked a unique identity.

The Boys is a fantastic TV series any way you see it, but it wouldn't be the same without its many antagonists. The reason we want to see Billy Butcher, Hughie, and the rest of the team succeed so badly is so that we can see the bad guys fail. They deserve it, after all. They commit hundreds of despicable acts that have made us think time and time again: "I really hate this character".
But that's part of The Boys' charm. It wouldn't be so engaging to watch if it weren't for its wicked villains and all their doings. So today we're celebrating the worst of the worst and ranking six characters of the Prime Series that we love to hate. But before we begin, Be warned: There will be spoilers for all four seasons of The Boys released so far.

Let's kick things off with the most harmless character on the list.

Scott Budnick was riding what could easily have been the height of any other producer’s career when he took a step back from Hollywood.
As EVP of Todd Phillips’ Green Hat Films over 14 years, Budnick produced comedy juggernauts like “Old School,” “Due Date” and the record-breaking “The Hangover” trilogy, which grossed more than $1.4 billion. But he bowed out to pursue activist aspirations in judicial system and social justice reform full-time, founding the Anti-Recidivism Coalition (Arc) in 2014 in an effort to provide assistance and stability to formerly incarcerated men and women.
Budnick returned to Hollywood in 2018 as founder and CEO of 1Community, a mission-oriented producing and cofinancing company for film and TV that embraces the power of storytelling to drive the same reform he’s advocated for for the better part of 20 years. The idea to marry the two passions and create “entertainment with impact,” he told TheWrap, came in part thanks to Tobey Maguire.

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.
Penn entered the Oscar race for the first time with his performance as a death row inmate in Tim Robbins’s “Dead Man Walking” (1995), for which he competed in Best Actor. Subsequent lead nominations as a jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and a mentally handicapped father in “I Am Sam” (2001) quickly followed.
He hit the Oscar jackpot with Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003), which cast him as a criminal grieving the murder of his daughter. Just five years later, he returned to the winner’s circle with his lead role in “Milk” (2008), Gus Van Sant’s...

Gus Van Sant is a fiercely individual voice with one foot in the independent world and another in the studio system, Van Sant’s filmography varies wildly from mainstream entertainments to peculiar experiments, from sublime highs to extreme lows. Let’s take a look at all 17 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1952 in Louisville, Kentucky, Van Sant kicked off his filmmaking career with the micro-budget, black-and-white “Mala Noche” (1985), a major preamble to the New Queer Cinema. His next feature, “Drugstore Cowboy” (1989), firmly established him as an indie maverick, a reputation he would fulfill with his followup, the River Phoenix/Keanu Reeves road movie “My Own Private Idaho” (1991). He dipped his toes into studio filmmaking with the gleefully dark satire “To Die For” (1995), which won Nicole Kidman a Golden Globe as Best Comedy/Musical Actress.

Sean Penn has defended his casting as a homosexual politician in 'Milk' back in 2008, insisting an actor's job is to convey a "different personality".The 63-year-old Hollywood star portrayed Harvey Milk - the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California back in the 1970s - in Gus Van Sant's acclaimed biographical drama.Penn's performance saw him win his second Best Actor Oscar, but 16 years on many would suggest that he should not be cast as Harvey due to him being a heterosexual man, with the role instead going to a homosexual actor.Penn refutes this notion and insists that limiting casting opportunities based on a drive for diversity ultimately damages the art of filmmaking.Appearing on The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast, he said: "Look, I'm totally on board with any industry - every industry, the movie business as well - confronting...

Prime Video is not moving ahead with “Outer Range,” its sci-fi and neo-Western drama starring Josh Brolin. The drama premiered its second season in mid May.
The series came from Brian Watkins and was executive produced by Brolin, Charles Murray, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Ernest McNealey, Tony Krantz, Heather Rae and Jon Paré.
“Outer Range” focuses on Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott (Brolin), a man who is fighting for both his land and his family. After the arrival of a mysterious drifter by the name of Autumn (Imogen Poots), a black void appears in his pasture. As this mystery unfolds, the Abbott family also has to juggle the disappearance of their daughter-in-law Rebecca as well as a long-standing feud with a rival family trying to take over their land, the Tillersons.

Sean Penn rarely grants interviews — he and the press haven’t always gotten along, to say the least — but last week, at his home in Malibu, the venerated actor and filmmaker sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast for an in-depth conversation about his life, career and most recent project, Daddio, an indie, released last Friday, of which he is particularly proud.
Seated in a small, light-filled room that he recently re-designed himself, the walls of which are covered with photos of his late parents, his two children and himself alongside many of world figures he has encountered in his travels as an activist, Penn, sporting a shock of white hair, puffed on cigarettes, spoke softly and was far warmer than his reputation would suggest he’d be. Sean Penn had been “miserable” at work since 2008 — and then “Daddio” came along.
Penn told the New York Times that 2008’s “Milk” was the “last time I had a good time” making a feature, prior to his new indie film with co-star and producer Dakota Johnson.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” Penn said. “‘Milk’ was the last time I had a good time.”
The infamously candid star continued, “I feel like an actor who is playing a leading role and is a known actor and is being paid well has a leadership position on a film and you’ve got to show up with energy and be a bodyguard for the director in some way. I was faking my way through that stuff and that was exhausting. Mostly what I thought was just, ‘What time is it? When are we going to get off?'”

Cameras are still rolling on the Cleveland set of James Gunn's Superman, and while today's photos weren't quite as revealing the ones that were shared online earlier in the week, we do have a very interesting new video which may confirm that a certain super pet will make an appearance in the Dcu reboot.

Sean Penn is slamming the backlash against straight actors playing homosexuals as “timid and artless”.The ‘Mystic River’ actor and director, 63, earned critical acclaim and his second Oscar for best actor thanks to his portrayal of the openly gay politician Harvey Milk in 2008’s ‘Milk’, and has now said he has been “miserable” on movie sets ever since. He told The New York Times about how he could not star in the film today amid hot debate over heterosexuals playing queer characters: “No. It could not happen in a time like this. “It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”Opening up about how his work on ‘Milk’ was the “last time I had a good time” on a film set, Sean added: “I went 15 years miserable on sets. Could Sean Penn make “Milk” today?
It’s a question the actor answered himself, in a recent profile by Maureen Dowd in the New York Times. “It could not happen in a time like this,” he said, of his performance as the slain gay politician. “It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”
Penn is clearly passionate about the Gus Van Sant-directed film, which won him his second Oscar and which, he says, was “the last time I had a good time” on sets more than 15 years after its 2008 release. He’s part of a class of A-listers from an age where the celebrity class was untouchable, and — like Jerry Seinfeld and Jennifer Aniston — he seems visibly irritated by the shifts in power toward the audience. In fairness, it is perhaps hard to believe that the precise way “Milk...

In a New York Times profile to promote his film “Daddio,” actor and activist Sean Penn griped about how things in Hollywood have changed since he starred in “Milk” in 2008. He said the industry has become “timid and artless,” and he’s been “miserable” on sets for the past 15 years.
In the interview, Penn told writer Maureen Dowd that he focused more on journalism and political activism after “Milk,” because he was having a bad time in the film industry.

For many people, the high water mark for Sean Penn’s career is his role as Harvey Milk in the acclaimed drama, “Milk.” That film earned Penn his second Oscar and the film went on to earn eight total Academy Award nominations. But when you fast forward 16 years and look back at the choice to make the film with Penn in the lead role of a gay activist and trailblazing politician, there is a bit of a pause.

In an interview the actor blamed cultural climate on casting issues as well as reflecting on his relationship with Madonna
Sean Penn says it would be currently impossible for him to play the part of a gay man, as he did in the 2008 film Milk, blaming a “timid and artless” current creative climate.
Penn was speaking to the New York Times about his earlier career, and responded to a question asking him if he would now be able to play Harvey Milk, the role for which Penn won a best actor Oscar. Saying that Milk “was the last time I had a good time [on a film set]”, Penn added: “It could not happen in a time like this. It’s a time of tremendous overreach. Sean Penn recently said in an interview with The New York Times that 2008’s “Milk” was “the last time I had a good time” on a film set, adding: “I went 15 years miserable on sets.” While Penn earned critical acclaim and his second Oscar for best actor thanks to his portrayal of the openly gay politician Harvey Milk, he told The Times he could not star in the film today as straight actors playing queer characters has become too hotly debated in Hollywood.
“No. It could not happen in a time like this,” Penn said about not playing Harvey Milk in 2024. “It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”
As for his 15 miserable years on film sets, Penn said it was because he felt like “an actor who is playing a leading role and is a known actor and is...

‘The Boys’ Season 4 debuted recently with its first three episodes. Despite a lukewarm reception compared to previous seasons, it marks a solid start for the penultimate season of the show.
Viewers have observed increased social commentary and violence, as well as a significant physical transformation of Marvin T. Milk, portrayed by Laz Alonso, also known as Mother’s Milk in the series.
In both the comics and the show, Mother’s Milk was known for his substantial presence and distinctive thick black beard. The actor’s dramatic transformation in the current season surprised many fans to the point where some speculated he had been recast.
In Season 4, Alonso appears without his beard and is noticeably slimmer. Upon realizing it was the same actor, fans feared the worst—that he might be ill, drawing comparisons to Chadwick Boseman, who appeared thinner before his public battle with and eventual death from colon cancer.

Similar to its previous installments, The Boys season 4 has opened to a stellar critic score at the Tomatometer, as it’s currently sitting on a comfortable 95% with three episodes in. However, the audience score paints a different picture, as it registers the series’ first rotten audience score with 52%, which is a result of review-bombing from fans, who are stressing the show has gone woke.

These days, queer movies come in all shapes and styles, from handsomely mounted biopics (“Milk”) to kid-friendly rom-coms. That’s a good thing; you want queer art to enjoy variety and novelty, and appeal to all audiences in the LGBTQ community. But sometimes, you want something very specific from a queer film; you want it to be sexy as hell.
When queer movies started bubbling into the mainstream in the early ’90s via movies like “Philadelphia,” they tended to be slightly sanitized, lacking much in the way of physical depictions of intimacy. That’s changed as the years have gone on. Thanks to films like “Brokeback Mountain,” there’s now a ton of modern examples of queer films that aren’t shy about their leads getting it on. But there’s a longer history of sexy queer cinema that goes back well before the ’90s, even if many of those...

The Boys has once again taken over the internet after the release of its Season 4. While this season has brought some interesting new changes to the story of the Amazon Prime hit series, one of the primary highlights was Laz Alonso. Mother’s Milk looks extremely different in the ongoing series than how he looked in the past.

The drastic transformation in Laz Alonso’s look has raised varied reactions on the internet. While several fans wondered if the character was recast, many others even rolled out creative memes on the matter. Sadly, the situation reminds us of the time when various comments were made on the late Chadwick Boseman’s physique shortly before his unfortunate demise.

Being one of the greatest superhit shows of all time, The Boys continues to leave fans absolutely baffled with each new season. While the incredible storyline is one thing that has fans immersed knee-deep into the series, what further seems to catch them off guard is the actors’ transformations. And the latest one catching all the fan attention in season 4 is Laz Alonso.

After they saw the actor in the exclusively ongoing season of the series, fans couldn’t help but express concern over Alonso. The reason behind this was simple: He underwent some unbelievably extreme weight loss this season; one that has fans finding it incredibly hard to digest without worrying if something could be wrong with him. But surprisingly, he isn’t the only one in this race.

“In the next 45 minutes, we’re about to hear Gus speak more than he has in the last 40 years,” Vito Schnabel, the art world scion who is increasingly turning his head toward Hollywood, told a crowd at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival last week.
He was there to moderate a conversation with American heavyweight filmmaker Gus Van Sant, who just directed Schnabel (and a pack of actors barreling toward Emmy nominations) in “Feud: Capote vs. The Swans.” That history, of a glittery New York whose underbelly was found in the bedrooms and hallways of the ruling class, took a back seat to Van Sant’s impactful career.
He has directed some of the stickiest and profound films of the past four decades, including “Drugstore Cowboy,” “My Own Private Idaho,” the Columbine shooting-inspired “Elephant,” Nicole Kidman’s “To Die For,” the Oscar winner “Milk,” and “Good Will Hunting,” which launched...

Massive Attack returned for their first show in five years on Wednesday night (June 5th) at Gothenburg Film Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden. To mark the occasion, they brought out longtime collaborators Elizabeth Fraser of Cocteau Twins and reggae singer Horace Andy for several songs each.
With Fraser (who is married to drummer Damon Reece), the trip-hop group performed their signature hit “Teardrop,” as well as “Black Milk and “Group Four.” However, the most notable moment was when they played “Song to the Siren” for the first time together.

Originally recorded by Tim Buckley, the best-known version of “Song to the Siren” is This Mortal Coil’s 1983 cover featuring Fraser and Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie.
Besides Fraser and Andy, Massive Attack were joined by Young Fathers for “Voodoo in My Blood” and Deborah Miller for “Safe from Harm” and “Unfinished Sympathy.”

Two works from the early queer literary canon will see audiobook release this June, narrated by actor Emile Hirsch.
Both were authored by Fritz Peters, an overlooked trailblazer in the 1950s who wrote frank and intimate depictions of homosexuality, spirituality and mental health struggles. The books are the novel “Finistère” and the memoir “Boyhood With Gurdjieff,” hitting audio platforms in time for global pride celebrations.
The recordings mark Hirsch’s first in the space, save voicing a character in “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans,” the animated film from Guillermo del Toro. Known for films like “Into the Wild” and “Milk,” he will next appear in the holocaust film “‘Bau, Artist at War.”
Despite selling big in his time, Peters’ catalogue had fallen into relative obscurity compared to literati peers like Gore Vidal, Henry Miller and Eudora Welty. Production company Hirsch Giovanni acquired the author’s complete works two years ago and serve as re-release publishers.

Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

Josh Brolin, the 56-year-old Oscar nominee for his supporting turn in “Milk,” co-star of Best Picture-winner “No Country For Old Men,” and Barbra Streisand’s stepson, can now add director to his resume. With a mission wholly unique at the time, make money while inspiring social change through entertainment, Participant Media managed to rewrite the rules of Hollywood during its all too short 20-year run. The studio singlehandedly proved to the world that you can produce unbelievably great films that have an impact, and audiences will go see them. Most studios and filmmakers working today owe a debt of gratitude to Jeff Skoll and his team of visionaries. That’s why the announcement that the studio will be shutting its doors felt like a gut punch, especially at a time when Hollywood is feeling a bit limp and lifeless.

On the eve of the world premiere of her new film Bird at the Cannes Film Festival, festival favorite Andrea Arnold revealed that the shoot was the toughest of her career.
“It was the hardest film I ever made,” Arnold said from the stage on Wednesday while accepting the 2024 Carrosse d’Or, or Golden Coach Award, at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes. “There were many challenges, more than usual, and there seemed to be more restrictions than I’d ever known. Dune: Part Two has been available to purchase on Digital services for almost a month now, but Warner Bros. has finally announced a streaming date for Denis Villeneuve's critically-acclaimed sci-fi sequel.
Fans will get to return to Arrakis from the comfort of their couches very soon, as Dune: Part Two is set to premiere on Max next Tuesday, May 21.
Although the movie didn't reach $1 billion as some predicted (always a long shot in the current box office climate), it did pass $700 million worldwide, meaning a third film based on Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune: Messiah, is likely.
Part Three hasn't been officially greenllt, but is believed to be in the early stages of development - though there's no guarantee that Villeneuve will to return to complete the trilogy.
“If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant," the filmmaker told Empire in a recent interview.

When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).
This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter, who begins to communicate with and seemingly influence her mother's actions.
