Noemie Merlant’s sophomore feature “The Balconettes” plays as a raunchy horror-comedy with a greater social conscience. The film follows three roommates – an actress, played by Merlant, a camgirl played by “Dune: Part Two” breakout Souheila Yacoub and a frustrated writer played Sanda Condreanu – who are initially infatuated and eventually repelled by a lothario neighbor from across the yard. Exploring questions of coercion and consent with a healthy dose of blood and guts, “The Balconettes” wants to entertain and energize in equal measure.
Variety spoke with the filmmaker ahead of her film’s world premiere in Cannes.

The concept of the quarantine movie was actually one of the newest trends during the two years the pandemic raged around the world, with a number of filmmakers turning to these social-distancing measures in order to present their new works. It seems, however, that we are not completely done with the particular approach, as still some movies that were shot during lockdown are coming out while others implement the style in different, more diverse styles. Whether it belongs in the first or the second category, “Livestream” definitely has some elements that make it stand out.

Parasite, Decision to Leave, Oldboy, or The Chaser – these works readily come to mind in light of the phenomenon that gave its name to this book, the “hallyu,” which refers to the international success and global spread of Korean pop culture. The term is to be taken in its literal sense: the wave, and this book unveils the submerged dynamics crucial to Korean cinema.
Through this book, we discover that Korean cinema's allure can be attributed, in part, to its unique style that resonates with the cinematic cultures that have influenced it from its inception. It interprets and sheds light on these influences from its own perspective.

The pilot episode for Rod Serling's seminal sci-fi TV series "The Twilight Zone" was called "Where Is Everybody?," and it aired on October 2, 1959. It was directed by Robert Stevens and, like most episodes of "The Twilight Zone," was written by Serling himself. This was, according to an article in LitHub, part of his contract; Serling was to write at least 80% of the show's scripts. For the remaining 20%, Serling solicited scripts from just about every writer in Hollywood and reportedly received maybe 14,000 spec scripts in less than a week. That seems high to this author's eye, but given the number of starving writers living in L.A., it could very well be plausible.
It was clear that soliciting scripts from the writers' world at large wasn't practical; there's no way Serling could read all those stories in any kind of timely fashion. Serling put the scripts aside and decided to get more intimate with it.

Alicia Vikander has received much love and the President’s Award for lifetime achievement at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival during its 57th edition, which opened on Friday.
The Oscar winner got a very warm reception from attendees of the opening ceremony, charming the audience by mentioning that her film A Royal Affair had shot in the Czech Republic, that she had enjoyed her time in the country and that it had been “pivotal” for her career. Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, starring Vikander as Queen Catherine Parr, the final wife of Henry VIII, who’s played by Jude Law, then kicked off this year’s fest.
In a wide-ranging roundtable conversation with The Hollywood Reporter and other media representatives, Vikander shared how she decides which roles to take on and why learning lines is so important for her. As we have mentioned many times before, one of the main reasons for the international popularity Korean cinema is enjoying at the moment is the quality of a number of action/crime thrillers that came out mostly during the 00s. As the popularity (and the quality) of local cinema has decreased during the last few years, and probably in an effort to earn back some of the losses the pandemic brought, a number of production companies are turning to the genre once more. The results, however, vary, while reaching the level of masterpieces like “I Saw the Devil” and “The Chaser” does not seem doable at the moment, with the consequences of political correctness definitely not helping in that regard. Regardless, Son Seung-hyun tries his hand on the category through a low budget effort that has both its merits and its issues.

Exclusive: A hot project just got hotter. Emmy-nominated Korean actress and model Hoyeon, who made waves with Netflix’s Squid Game, is set to make her feature debut in director Na Hong-Jin’s Korean thriller Hope, which we revealed earlier today.
She joins Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender.
This is the first project from acclaimed Korean director Na since 2016 hit The Wailing, and it’ll mark Hoyeon’s first starring role in a Korean project since she made her screen debut in Squid Game.
The largely Korean-language film will follow the residents of Hopo Port, where a mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. Before long, the residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before. Hoyeon will play a policewoman.

Lee Sang-yong’s 2022 feature, The Roundup, had many twists and turns before it was finally released in South Korean theaters in May. The production originally began in 2019, but filming was temporarily postponed, as location permits did not come through in Vietnam, where the story is mostly set, because of the pandemic. The industry’s old saying that “no sequel is better than its prequel” put even more pressure on Lee, who was an assistant director on the film’s precursor, 2017’s The Outlaws, about an old-school detective taking down a ruthless gangster in Seoul’s Chinatown.
“I really didn’t think the movie would turn out this well,” says Lee, whose feature became a smash hit, beating its predecessor at the box office. “I’m just stunned and grateful. It’s the result of the hard work of many actors and staff for over three years,...

The traditional action blockbuster of the 90s and 00s was usually a film where the story was there to provide a rather thin basis for the constant action, to the point that you could fast forward the scenes when there was none. As time passed, and Korean cinema presented the likes of “I Saw the Devil” and “The Chaser”, thriller, drama, social commentary elementss also became part of the particular category, reinvigorating and elevating it to another level. As political correctness became more and more prevalent, these extra elements started to become more intense, occasionally even taking over the action/violence elements. “Carter” on the other hand, by the director of “The Villainess” seems like a throw-back to the action blockbusters of the past, focusing almost exclusively on the rather impressive action, while being ultra violent. Unfortunately, most of the issues from his previous film are also here.

Kim Yoon-suk plays a former policeman turned pimp in this South Korean thriller directed by Na Hong-jin. Yoon-suk’s stable of call girls is dying at the hands of a psycho-killer and he relies on his detective skills to track down the maniac. The film itself has a maniacal energy—it isn’t called The Chaser for nothing—and the movie’s headlong action sequences were rewarded by several festival awards including Cannes’ Best New Director.

Sometimes movies escape our attention, for many reasons. We were busy with other things, we were sick when it was released, we lost our Netflix login. Here is another attempt by the Tfh gurus to shine some light on a few films you may have missed.
The Chaser is a 2008 South Korean film that was inspired by a real-life serial killer. Directed by Na Hong-jin, the story centers on a former-cop-turned-pimp. Now, that’s a real career change for you. The pimp becomes alarmed when two of his prostitutes go missing, creating a cash flow situation that probably makes him consider rejoining the force.
The suspect is captured during what can only be described as an automotive meet-cute – he literally crashes into a cop car – but he can’t be held for long due to lack of evidence. His rap sheet includes performing a lobotomy on a family member, which might be excused,...

After a great couple years that 2019 and 2020 were for South Korean cinema, big things were expected in 2021. With the virus situation calming down briefly and providing some relief, it looked set to be a promising year, as productions that were halted kicked back into gear and high-profile films that were awaiting release finally started to find their way back to the theatres. However, in terms of the quality of the output that we received, it would be safe to say that the industry could not quite capitalise on the success of the preceding two years and in fact can be seen taking a step back in 2021.
In any case, from what we did get, here are the best South Korean film of 2021, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2020, but since they mostly circulated in 2020, we decided to include them.

As violence erupts in the African nation of Somalia, delegates from both North and South Korea scramble to evacuate the capital city of Mogadishu in Ryoo Seung-wan's action-packed political thriller Escape From Mogadishu. In the late 1980s, South Korea and its contentious Northern neighbour were both lobbying to be admitted into the United Nations. Serial killer thrillers are common fodder for South Korean cinema, with some of the best features in the sub-genre coming from the country and indeed, some of the best features from the country being in this sub-genre. Every year sees a number of releases about psychotic killers to varying responses from the audiences and critics. While 2020 was a tepid year from films in general, 2021 has so far fared much better and thus of course serial killer films would also make a return. One such release is “Midnight”, which saw a hybrid release both in theatres and on the local streaming platform Tving. A release which was pretty much swept under the radar due to a lack of a strong marketing campaign, it benefited from a strong word of mouth upon release.

After the golden age of S. Korean crime thrillers that took place during the previous one and a half decades, and about half a decade that saw copies that were not particularly artful or successful, the genre had fallen into a kind of disfavour, with very few films of the category being shot. Kwon Oh-seung, in his debut, comes to fill this gap with a movie that takes us back to the style of “The Chaser”.
“Midnight” is screening at New York Asian Film Festival

There are new shows galore across both streaming and broadcast. Fantasy Island (and it's so good) debuts on Fox, and Stargirl returns on a new network, The CW.
Titans drops on a new platform, too, on HBO Max, and Slasher: Flesh & Blood premieres on Shudder (and AMC+). See all of our recommendations below!
Saturday, August 7

Who doesn't love some good old-fashioned storm chasing?
Well, Abby Fields probably doesn't when she chooses to weather a category 3 hurricane with her comatose patient rather than move her.
If that isn't a daunting enough experience for anyone, especially when it includes hunkering down with some undesirables, but what they didn't prepare for is a stranger inhabiting the peninsula, too.
Dr. Carl, a celebrity storm chaser by day and serial killer by night, is on the loose, and some heavy rain is the least of their worries!

“Black Widow” held on to top spot at the South Korean box office despite a challenge from the new release of local horror film “The Medium.” New release, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” made no impact.
The Disney-Marvel film saw weekend earnings of $4.09 million, a drop of 54% compared with the previous session. Since release on July 7, it has accumulated $19.2 million, putting it within $25,000 of the 2021 record currently enjoyed by “F9.”
“The Medium,” a highly-anticipated horror film that involves Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun and Korean producer-director Na Hong-jin (“The Chaser”), came second over the weekend, earning $2.82 million.
The film was launched on Wednesday and had started brightly, initially beating “Black Widow.” Over five days it has accumulated $5.05 million.
While their screen counts were not hugely dissimilar – “Black Widow” had 1,577, against 1,402 for “The Medium” – the American film accounted for 48% of the nationwide box office market, compared with just 33% for “The Medium.”

"A story about shamanism in Thailand..." An early promo trailer has debuted for a new supernatural horror film from Thailand titled The Medium, the latest from acclaimed Thai filmmaker Banjong Pisanthanakun. The film is being sold at the Cannes Market this year and is looking to get some extra buzz with this early trailer drop. The Medium is a rural horror thriller telling the story of a shaman's inheritance in the poor Isan region of Thailand. "The spirit that appears to be possessing a family member might not be the benevolent Goddess they believe it to be." Ohh that sounds very freaky. No cast is announced yet, but the film is being produced by fellow Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin. Horror fans definitely need to keep an eye out for this. It looks utterly terrifying. Here's the promo trailer (+ poster) for Banjong Pisanthanakun's The Medium, from YouTube ...

The creepy fascination for shamanism that continues to exist in modern-day Thailand and Korea will be on full display this summer in “The Medium.” The film is now confirmed for a July commercial release and may be in line for a midnight screening berth in a major festival.
Korean distributor Showbox is gearing up for the film’s outing in cinemas with the release of a first trailer. July and August are prime months for horror in Korea where local audiences believe that on-screen chills provide relief from the oppressive summer heat outside.

"I will kill everyone linked to you." Well Go USA has released an official US trailer for a crazy fun Korean action thriller movie called Deliver Us From Evil, from filmmaker Won-Chon Hong, best known as the screenwriter of The Chaser, The Scam, The Yellow Sea, and Confession of Murder. This is actually more of a half Korea, half Thailand production, as most of the film is spent in Thailand. The film follows In-nam, a hitman who plans to retire after completing one final hit, but finds himself linked to a kidnapping case in Thailand and targeted by Ray, the man whose sibling he assassinated previously. Starring Hwang Jung-min, Lee Jung-jae, Park Jung-min, and Choi Hee-seo. Featuring music by Mowg. This looks super stylish and intense, thanks to a lot of kick ass practical action filmed in Thailand. This looks like it's a must watch for anyone that's a fan...

Amazing script, great direction, two opponents that give a true acting recital, a little girl who steals the show at times, action, comedy, drama, agony and everything one could ask from a crime thriller can be found in “The Chaser”. Evidently, the film deserved both the awards it netted and the its ticket revenue.

Updated with ITV Entertainment statement: WGA has issued a strike notice against ABC’s quiz show The Chase, from ITV America.
“Per Working Rule 8, no Writers Guild member shall accept employment on The Chase, effective immediately,” the guild wrote in a letter to members. “ITV America has refused to apply the full terms of the Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) to all seasons of The Chase going forward – and writers on The Chase, and the Guild at large, refuse to accept an agreement that would undermine writers of future seasons.”
ABC’s The Chase, a remake of British game show, features the stars of Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time, James Holzhauer, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Hosted by Sara Haines, it recently aired its initial order of nine episodes. It has not been renewed for a second season though there may be additional produced episodes from Season 1.

Now in post-production, “The Medium” is a horrifying story of a shaman’s inheritance in the Isan region of Thailand. But the goddess that appears to have taken possession of a family member turns out not be as benevolent as it first appears.
The film (aka “Rang-Zong”) was developed by Na with the backing of Korean studio Showbox. Local production is by Thailand’s Gdh 559. Co-production is by Na’s company Northern Cross, with the film marking Na’s debut as a producer.
International rights are being handled by independent sales firm Finecut, which will launch the film at Berlin’s European Film Market. Finecut previously handled two of Na’s earlier films “The Chaser” and “The Wailing,” both of which premiered in the Cannes festival’s official selection.

The place Korean cinema now holds in the international film circuit owes much to this particular category, since it was the films back in the beginning of the century that kickstarted the new Golden Era of the country’s movie industry,. Titles like “Old Boy“, “Memories of Murder“, “The Chaser“, “I Saw the Devil” and a plethora of others are still mentioned frequently in Best oF lists of movies from the country or the category, and actually remain the most renowned among western viewers, along, of course, “Parasite“. Evidently, the industry rode this wave a bit too far during the 2010s, with crime thrillers coming out from every side, to the point that a number of them seem like they were produced on an “assembly line” due to how similar they look like and function. However, even in this maze of mediocrity, there are still a number that stand out,...

Santiago Segura’s “Father There Is Only One 2” has punched €2.14 million ($2.5 million) across its first five days in Spain over July 29-Aug. 2, according to Comscore, maintaining its bid to become Europe’s first Covid-19 era blockbuster.
With some cinema theater takings still to come in, the box office trawl is at least 21% up on opening figures for the family comedy franchise’s first installment, which went on to become Spain’s biggest movie release of 2019, earning a final €14.2 million ($16.1 million) from an Aug. 1 bow.
This year’s opening box office has been made on one more day at the box office, with the sequel bowing on a Wednesday, and the first installment on a Thursday. But “Father 2” grossed $2.5 million from 23% fewer screens in Spain, according to Comscore — some movie theaters remain closed because of Covid-19 — and largely over a weekend that caught many Spaniards going on or returning from vacation.

Death of a Chinese Clown (2016) by Jaime Cleeland (10.04 minutes)
More of an experimental succession of extreme images that an actual film, “Death of a Chinese Clown” was shot in Xuchang, China with the purpose of showing that underground cinema can be made in the country.

All the while, extremely colored images and minor visual effects appear on screen, inducing the film with a sense of disorientation and even danger, that is heightened even more by the noise music that plays throughout, as the film actually function as a music video.

The first two episodes of the eight-part drama will premiere on the streamer on August 6, following a special screening and Q&a with Minchin at the Atx Television Festival in mid-July.
Originally commissioned by Foxtel and Sky UK, Upright follows Minchin’s Lucky, a musician who drives across Australia after he learns that his mother is dying, packing nothing but an upright piano for the journey. But his plans are soon turned upside-down when he meets runaway teenager Meg (Milly Alcock), who’s dealing with some family demons of her own.
The show is created by The Chaser‘s Chris Taylor, writing alongside Kate Mulvany and Leon Ford, produced by Lingo’s Jason Stephens, Taylor and Melissa Kelly, and directed by Matt Saville.

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death, where this month I have a very interesting treat. Those who remember my interview with Alexandra West about the movie Pyewacket know we both loved it, so this month I’m thrilled to have a chat with the film’s director, Adam MacDonald, who you might also know from his film Backcountry and the third season of Slasher.
For this month’s film, we’re taking a look at MacDonald’s favorite of all time, a South Korean thriller from Hong-jin Na called The Chaser (2008).
