About the Author

Lao Tzu, a Chinese philosopher, is considered to be the founder of Taoism. His birth and death dates are uncertain. According to legend, Lao Tzu was keeper of the archives at the imperial court. When he was eighty years old he set out for the western border of China, saddened and disillusioned that show more men were unwilling to follow the path to natural goodness. At the border, he was asked by a border guard to record his teachings before he left. These teachings were compiled into the Tao Te Ching (The Way and Its Power). (Bowker Author Biography) show less

Read the book slowly over almost a year -- one 'flower' each night. Very calming for me. Also gave me some ideas about forgetting our Western ideas of competing, taking advantage of others, of flaunting ourselves. Non-action seems to be better.

I actually listened to the audio book version of Tao Te Ching after hearing it mentioned on the Sword and Laser podcast. With an hour drive into work, an audio book can have a crucial impact on my commute. At first the delivery is a little hard to adapt to in that it flows much like the Tao principle. Letting your mind wander for a moment tends to lose the momentum. While read in a leisurely pace, the concepts of Tao Te Ching all tended to make me drift into introspection. There was quite a bit of turning off my radio so that I could let myself catch up.

I really enjoyed the Tao Te Ching; however, I think that this would be best enjoyed in written form. I plan to put it into my list of books that I read over and over again. There is so much to digest in the wisdom of this translation, and I think that each reading will provide more insight.

This isn’t a book I can leave much review for. It isn’t a book that is read once and then put to the side. For one, I’m not competent to review a book of poetry. And, these are thoughts on morals and power. Much of the translation appears simple, but sometimes the metaphors are hard for me to understand, but sometimes they are so simple that it gives me pause.

Each time I read poetry, I realize I don’t know how to read poetry. Especially poetry that doesn’t rhyme. Oh well.

I enjoyed and appreciated Le Guin’s notes throughout and at the end. My plan is to keep this on my desk and crack it open at random to think on one every once and a while.
