- Willem-Alexander, King of the Netherlands, is the oldest child of former Queen Beatrix and her husband Claus van Amsberg, a German diplomat. He was formerly Prince of Orange and heir apparent to the throne and became king in 2013 when his mother abdicated in his favor. He attended public primary and secondary schools, served in the Royal Netherlands Air Force and Navy, and studied history at the University of Leiden. In 2002, he married Máxima Zorreguieta Cerruti, an investment banker, with whom he has three daughters, Princess Catharina-Amalia, his heir apparent; Princess Alexia; and Princess Ariane. King Willem-Alexander is interested international water management issues. Until his accession to the throne, he was chairman of the Advisory Committee on Water to the Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and the Environment, and chairman of the Secretary-General of the United Nations' Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation.
