On September 1, 1997 the results of a poll to find the nation's favourite children's book were announced. The poll, sponsored by Waterstone's and the BBC, found Roald Dahl's Matilda to be the show more favorite. The top ten books from the poll are shown in the following table.

On September 1, 1997 the results of a poll to find the nation's favourite children's book were announced. The poll, sponsored by Waterstone's and the BBC, found Roald Dahl's Matilda to be the favorite. The top ten books from the poll are shown in the following table. The poll was run in partnership between the BBC, as part of its "The Bookworm" programme, and Waterstone's bookshops, however it is not currently possible to associate multiple organizations to a Notable List.
There were three categories announced in the results: Under 16s, Over 16s, and Overall. The full 100 Overall have been added, however only the top 10 are known for the Under 16s and Over 16s categories.
