About us
The Ironbound Business Improvement District – Home to over 570 businesses and more than 170 restaurants, the Ironbound Business Improvement District (IBID) is Newark’s shining star, promoting interest in the City as a great place to visit in addition to fostering economic growth and employment opportunities. Established in 2000, the IBID is led by a 13-member board and is funded through special assessments on commercial properties in the District. Since its inception, the Ironbound BID has upgraded and improved the District by focusing on quality of life issues such as sidewalk and street cleaning, parking changes and pedestrian signage, and other administrative tasks. The organization has embarked on an ambitious streetscape redevelopment plan that will transform the Ferry Street corridor into a first-class shopping, entertainment, and restaurant destination.

NEWARK, NJ: Sheriff Armando Fontoura Opens Community Center Named After Him in Ironbound By HENRIQUE MANO | Newark, NJ The Sheriff Armando Fontoura and Mary Fontoura Community Center, in Independence Park in Newark, in the middle of Ironbound, is already a reality. That modern space, valued at around 10 million dollars, was inaugurated last week with the presence of the state's lieutenant governor, Tahesha Way, the executive administrator of Essex County, Joseph DiVincenzo, and a handful of other political and community individuals. The veteran politician, who has held the position for 34 years, had his daughters Lori Apicelli, Lisa Fontoura and Maria Fontoura by his side, his grandchildren Nicole and David and his son-in-law Fred Apicelli. “I am here today with great humility, just as my wife Maria would be if she were alive, but also with deep pride”, says sheriff Armando Fontoura, speaking to the newspaper LUSO-AMERICANO. “I accept this honor on behalf of my family but also recognizing that, in fact, it is a recognition of the Portuguese community as a whole, for the way it contributes to the good of the city, the county and even the state”. Daughter Maria Fontoura, deputy director of “Rolling Stone” magazine, also does not hide her pride, telling us that “today was also a return to my Portuguese origins, as I spent a lot of time at Ironbound”. Speaking to our reporter, the county's executive administrator, Joseph DiVincenzo, notes that the honor “is more than deserved for everything that Sheriff Fontoura has done throughout his career as a public servant, being a great asset to all of us ”. #GoIronbound #SheriffArmandoFontoura
