  • Your social media posts may make a meaningful difference for people's lives. Dr. Monica Cox sees feedback she gets, "people who are leaving careers because of a book, because of a tweet. People who are sharing their stories because of things that I've said." Dr. Monica Cox and I talk about her new book, Never Defeated: Nine Lesson from the Workplace Frontlines. Check out her interview on The Social Academic blog, podcast, and YouTube channel 📚🎙️

  • My professor clients tell me summer is a time they get a lot of things done, especially what they couldn't get to during the academic year. Creating your personal academic website might be on your "I wish I could do this if I had the time" list. It's okay if you've been putting off your online presence because you haven't had the time or focus. It's okay to prioritize rest, or other projects you care about instead too. If a personal academic website has been on your to-do list, but it's just not going to get done... It's okay for you to get help with your online presence too. You don’t have to start from scratch. If you want something quick and easy, you can get your website up TODAY with Owlstown, a free academic website builder from my friend Dr. Ian Li. We run the Best Personal Academic Websites Contest together with Brittany Trinh. Here's the replay of our free live event to help you set up your personal academic website (link in the comments below).  You don't need to hire me to make your website a reality.

  • "Social media is great. My STEM is for the streets. Where more are the streets than social media?" A new featured interview with Dr. Carlotta Berry is now live on The Social Academic blog, podcast, and YouTube channel. We talk about what it’s like to be a professor with an extensive online presence with profiles on many platforms and multiple websites. Dr. Berry knows that when she shows up online, when she creates strong black women characters for her books who care about STEM, she helps create “what I really wanted to see when I was an engineering student: was Black women professors in engineering.” We also talk about writing her black STEM romance books, Elevated Inferno and Breaking Point. Let's talk about what it’s like to be a professor and an author online. #STEM #Research #ScienceCommunication https://lnkd.in/gdkHkcU3

  • "I don't want to be reliant on Twitter anymore, I'd really like to be done with that platform." Are you a professor considering changing up your social media life? Create your online presence with -A personal academic website -Update your faculty profile -Update your profile here on LinkedIn! -Write an academic bio that shares who you are and what you care about most As much as I've gotten out of Twitter's platform, as time goes on I feel less aligned with it. I'm there because you're there. But when professors ask me, "Can I stop using Twitter?" I say, "Of course. You don't need permission from me. But, let's set you up for success elsewhere." Professors sometimes think they HAVE to be on social media. Or that they HAVE to be everywhere (and do all the things). If you've ever felt overwhelmed or unsure what you should be doing for your online presence, you're not alone. Twitter has been a standard option for a while. My professor clients are so cute. They're always correct themselves saying, "Twitter slash X," or "Oops, I meant X." I'm the one who still says Twitter all the time haha. Twitter is still being used by academics every day. But that doesn't mean you personally have to stay there. There are many options for your online presence. While you can go to any of the other social media platforms, there are also options to creating space for yourself online. A personal academic website is my top recommendation for professors like you. If you've worried about 'how will people find me if I stop using Twitter,' a website website connects your academic profile together. With key elements like your -Academic bio -Curriculum vitae (CV) -Headshot an academic website is the best way to manage your online presence 🌟 I have free resources to help you make your own personal academic website, or my favorite alternative--a LinkedIn profile--on The Social Academic blog, podcast, and YouTube channel. • Yeah! You can have an online presence even if you don't want a personal academic website. Here are 5 ways to have a stronger digital footprint as a professor: -a new headshot/photo of you -update your academic bio so it reflects you now -update your faculty profile -imrove your LinkedIn profile -personalize your email signature Pick one of the above to update for 2024 🌟 You've got this. I have free resources on The Social Academic blog, podcast, and YouTube channel to help you.
