What's scarier than Friday the 13th? Cutting the budgets of our national parks. Congress only has days to pass a federal spending bill. Your members need to hear from millions of Americans right now to prevent budget cuts to our parks and communities! Previous budget decisions have led to reduced ranger-led programs, undermined efforts to protect resources, left maintenance needs unaddressed, and compromised visitor experiences. Ultimately, this hurts our irreplaceable resources, and the more than 300 million visitors who visit them each year will be the ones to pay the price. Join NPCA in urging Congress to work together to invest in these special places. #ParkFunding #FridayThe13th #ParkNews #NationalParks #ParkAdvocacy #ParkAdvocate

Rising temperatures at Sequoia National Park threatens water availability for ecological and human use, and threaten the park's iconic towering trees with wildfires. Droughts then slow sequoia recovery and contribute to the increasing intensity of fires, leading to what’s known as “megafires.” $2.3 million from the Inflation Reduction Act will help reduce forest vulnerability to drought and fire in Sierra Parks, including Sequoia and Kings Canyon and Yosemite National Park. #IRA #InflationReductionAct #Funding #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate #Sequoia #California #Conservation

Park staff at Mammoth Cave National Park often describe the site as "two parks in one," with breathtaking worlds to explore below and above ground. Visitors have been touring the cave for over two centuries, and while the caves are as awe-inspiring as ever, the trails tours rely on have seen better days. Through an investment from #TheGreatAmericanOutdoorsAct, cave trails are getting repaired and enhanced, protecting visitors and natural resources alike. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. Join NPCA in urging Congress to keep investing in our national parks and extend GAOA by at least five more years! https://lnkd.in/ej6auypb #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #ParkFunding #ProtectOurParks #ParkAdvocate #Kentucky #MammothCave

Whitebark pines have a soulmate, and that’s the Clark’s Nutcracker. Thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act, whitebark restoration reunites this keystone species with an essential ecosystem in Olympic National Park. Nearly $3 million from the IRA are devoted to strengthening our forests in the face of climate change threats – and ensuring this uniquely symbiotic relationship between the whitebark pine and Clark’s Nutcracker persist for generations. #IRA #InflationReductionAct #Funding #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate #Acadia #Maine #Conservation

As we head into Labor Day weekend, we're thinking about Frances Perkins, a tireless labor advocate who's the reason we have worker protections like the 40-hour workweek and minimum wages. Today, the Bureau of Land Management released a Western Solar Plan which will guide large-scale solar development on public lands across the Western U.S. The plan’s impacts reach beyond BLM lands, affecting 80 adjacent national parks and surrounding communities. NPCA is calling for responsible solar development that minimizes harm to national parks and the communities they support. #nationalparks #publiclands #parkadvocate #solarenergy

In Acadia National Park, one small but mighty fish needs our protection. In fact, without action, it’s likely that brook trout — an iconic species beloved for its cultural and ecological value — will become extinct in many park habitats. The good news: the Inflation Reduction Act has set aside nearly $2 million to conservation efforts up and down east coast parks, including Acadia National Park. #IRA #InflationReductionAct #Funding #NationalParks #ParkAdvocate #Acadia #Maine #Conservation

The Cuyahoga River is iconic not only for the oasis it provides between dense urban areas, but for its place in environmental activist history. The river infamously caught fire from staggering pollution in the 1960s and locals have been fighting to preserve and rebuild the area's wilderness since long before it was protected by the Park Service. Today, eroded areas along Cuyahoga Valley National Park's famous towpath are negatively impacting the park's most important asset, leaving the landscape exposed to unsafe conditions. Investments from the #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct will stabilize the Cuyahoga riverbank, meaning the trails will no longer be subject to regular damage. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. History is happening in Florida this week: The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida are among the earliest stewards of the Everglades, and a new agreement with the National Park Service honors their profound relationship with the landscape. NPCA lauds this costewardship partnerships, which establishes cooperative administration of fire and water resources and visitor services at the park. From Melissa Abdo, PhD, NPCA's Sun Coast Regional Director: "As national park advocates, we recognize and deeply appreciate efforts by the Miccosukee and Seminole Tribes of Florida to protect their sacred lands and waters. "Under the leadership of Secretary Deb Haaland, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna, the Department of the Interior has made tremendous strides on Indigenous engagement in our national parks in recent years. This new costewardship agreement is one of the first of its kind established under the authority of the National Park Service. The partnership outlined in this agreement marks significant progress in the Park Service’s efforts to manage our public lands in a way that meaningfully reflects nation-to-nation relationships with Tribes."
