We're thinking back to the Community Workshop on Preference Signals that we held in June in New York City. The conversations we had were the most focused and comprehensive to date on preference signals and we're so thankful to all those who made the event possible and took the time to attend. We plan to continue to convene our community members globally to gather input and, given the right funding opportunity, could be piloting a framework within the next year. We've published a summary and some thoughts on next steps on our blog. A huge thank you to our friends at Morrison Foerster, especially Justin Haan and Joe Gratz and NYU Law Engelberg Center on Innovation Law & Policy + Michael Weinberg for all of their support in making this workshop a success. And a special shoutout to our speakers and CC board members for their insights and ongoing support: Anna Tumadottir, Glenn O. Brown, Arun Sundararajan, Andy Parsons, Jordan Meyer, Greg Lindahl, Shayne Longpre, Marta Belcher, Delia Browne, James Grimmelmann, Angela Oduor Lungati, Bilal Randeree, Alek Tarkowski, Jeni Tennison, Luis Villa, Kat Walsh, Lawrence Lessig, and Katrina Southerland. https://lnkd.in/eqzvnaYY #GenerativeAI #GenAI #CreativeCommons #PreferenceSignals

We've had the joy and benefit of Sarah Glassmeyer's expertise on our team for almost a year now - so it seems silly that we've waited this long to get her writing for us! Never fear, we've rectified that just in time for this excellent forecasting piece, part of our bumper week of year-end content. Sarah's prediction? 2024 will be the year of the knowledge wrangler, the year when your knowledge workers will come into their own as firms grapple with getting generative AI projects seriously under way and leveraging their own data effectively. What's coming down the pipeline is no less difficult than what we faced this year (in some ways, it may be harder), but never fear: you likely have the necessary resources on board already in the form of your experienced knowledge workers and information specialists. #legaltech #legalinnovation #legalresearch #Knowledgework #genAI

Tech governance is a hot topic at the moment. The Economist recently featured a debate on the feasibility of self-governance between OpenAI's board members: former (Helen Toner, Tasha McCauley) and present (Larry Summers, Bret Taylor). Their common ground is that AI represents a major development in human history, and government regulation is essential. The next wave of tech presents significant risks including misaligned AI, dual-use (e.g. bioweapons), and market monopolies. Regulation can help, but it is hard given the speed of evolution, concentration of resources, and geopolitical tensions. Further, regulation can unintentionally limit innovation or competition. In April, a group of leaders from government, science and business was convened by the BCG Henderson Institute and Simon Levin for our annual #Science and #Business dinner to discuss regulatory innovation to address these challenges. Link to a full summary of the discussion in the comment below. What will the year 2024 look like in #legaltech? According to the inimitable Sarah Glassmeyer, it's going to be the year many firms get down to work, building out use cases for generative AI and preparing information and content and data to make the technology work effectively. For some firms, Sarah, says, it might also be the year you move from a FOMO moment to an "Oh no" moment... unless you deploy the right resources to start doing this work. And what are the right resources? You may not need some new AI role just yet. Instead, look for your knowledge wranglers: "If you work in library services, knowledge management, records, or otherwise spend your time making information and knowledge findable and usable, then get ready to shine because this next year is all about you." Find out why Sarah's has pinged 2024 as the year of the knowledge wrangler, and how to position yourself for success and avoid an "Oh no!" moment, by reading her excellent article (linked below). #GenAI #knowledgework #knowledgemanagement #data #legalresearch
