A balanced breakfast with Richard Millington. I finished Build Your Community over the holidays and I'm going to try my best to capture my learnings so far. This book is packed with tactics, guides, strategies and check-lists to get you started on building a successful community. My top lessons from this book: • Make sure you identify a problem/gap that your community addresses • Understand the purpose of your community to your organisation, stakeholders and members • Define your community segments and how to address their individual challenges and needs • Build a promotional plan for different phases of your community from pre-launch to maturity • There's loads of tactics to building community but surveying members is a must first step • Time is a necessary ingredient when you build anything worthwhile especially for communities • Reddit and sub-reddits are a great resource for online and inperson communities Thanks Rich and Paz for sharing this knowledge with me. Community doesn't grow out of nowhere 🌱 This is a photo of my friend Jina. Jina recently opened an independent book shop with a goal to build a community, a safe space for book lovers, creators, makers and writers. This is her doing a workshop for one attendee. Jina serves as a reminder that building a community takes: ➡ Resilience: Resilience helps maintain momentum and commitment over the long term, even when progress may feel slow or incremental. ➡ Dedication: If you’re not dedicated to each person that comes through your door, you might miss out on the opportunity to nurture a valuable connection. ➡ Patience: Willingness to invest time and care, even when faced with small numbers, demonstrates a long-term perspective needed for innovation. I might be a little bit biased on this, but where Jina's workshop for one may seem small, it's a powerful testament to the beginnings of building a community, business and a place for people to enjoy 🌸

If people can get your content for free, why would they pay to be in your community? 🤔 That is an interesting question. And the answer is that people rarely join a community for information. Information is cheap and easy to find. Connection is a lot less common and a lot more valuable. There’s no roadmap or success path in free content. There’s no member journey. There’s no guide answering questions and directing you to your next best step. People will pay to be free of the burden of finding and curating information. They will pay for guidance in applying the information to their specific situation. And they will pay for the fellowship of other people on the same journey, who can understand and encourage and support them in a way no one else can. Now's a great time to find your community "home"! As you set your 2024 goals and intentions, where will you find your people and your place?
