Earlier this week, I happily announced that my new, three-volume book series is now available in print format (eBooks eventually to follow) and shared the publisher’s links to both Volumes One and Two. Today, here is a preview of Volume Three! It shows how to plan Learning Progressions--the “building blocks of daily instruction”--that educators use to teach their students the prerequisite concepts and skills of the “unwrapped” Essential Standards. Quick Progress Checks provide them with timely feedback they use to adjust follow-up instruction and that students also use to make needed learning adjustments. Standards-Aligned Learning Tasks, highly engaging mini-projects, engage students to progressively develop their understanding of the Essential Standards’ “unwrapped” concepts, skills, and Big Ideas. All three volumes, intentionally aligned one to another, show educators how they can optimize their instruction and maximize their students’ learning! Here’s the Volume Three book cover and publisher’s link: https://lnkd.in/g4mPQYYq. Thanks to all of you for your encouragement!

📖 Books for Educators 📖 Turn any student into a bookworm with a few easy and practical strategies. Author Donalyn Miller says she has yet to meet a child she can't turn into a reader. No matter how far behind Miller's students might be when they reach her 6th grade classroom, they end up reading an average of 40 to 50 books a year. Miller's unconventional approach dispenses with drills and worksheets that make reading a chore. Instead, she helps students navigate the world of literature and gives them time to read books they pick out themselves. Her love of books and teaching is both infectious and inspiring. In the book, you'll find: 🙌 Hands-on strategies for managing and improving your own school library Tactics for helping students walk on their own two feet and continue the reading habit after they've finished with your class. 📈 Data from student surveys and end-of-year feedback that proves how well the Miller Method works. 👨👩👦 The Book Whisperer includes a dynamite list of recommended "kid lit" that helps parents and teachers find the books that students really like to read. #booksforlife #educators #bookclub Source: https://lnkd.in/gvVyz3nE

Thank you for posting about Chapter 3 (tactics) in Centers for Teaching and Learning (https://lnkd.in/e8xWQtA2), Derek Bruff! This is timely, because I recently presented about this work at the AAC&U annual conference. A couple of things to add from the presentation, which don't appear in Chapter 3 and might be interesting to you: 1) In aggregate, it is clear that CTLs offer a repertoire of tactics (mean=4.3). 2) Brief workshops continue to be most commonly promoted by CTLs -- however, consultation/observations, orientations, and learning communities are very close (photo finish!) runner ups. 3) Institutional type matters: Interestingly, at doctoral universities, consultation/observations, orientations, and learning communities are **more common** than workshops. 4) CTL age matters: Workshops are most common at newest CTLs (under 10 years of existence), but other tactics are more common at more established CTLs. I find this interesting to think about CTL organizational learning. 5) And in later chapters, I align aims with tactics and suggest that there is generally good alignment for many common CTL aims. But some stand out to me for misalignment, such as Change/Innovation aims (most commonly associated with the brief workshop). 6) Regarding Course Design Institutes, I am working with a great team (including UVA CTE's @michaelpalmer) on a book about them, to help increase their frequency in the CTL portfolio. (Coming soon in 2025 by Routledge!) Although not addressed in the AACU session, your comment on department/unit work is important and something that other close readers have emailed to me. This does appear in other parts of the book (e.g., assessment-infused centers in Chapter 4, curricular aims in Chapter 2) -- but I also think this is an artifact/drawback of the web methodology. As someone who has worked and does work in this space, we often call it different things, such as: assessment, department retreats, curriculum mapping, program evaluation (to name a few). Also, it may be that Centers tend not to list this on websites because we -- thinking about my own-- typically communicate with departments/schools/colleges about this in other ways. However, the project has prompted me to think about this very valuable area of work and how we should best promote it. Great point!
New on the blog: What programs and services do centers for teaching and learning offer? Mary Wright has the answers in her new book! Spoiler: It's a lot more than just teaching workshops and classroom observations. https://lnkd.in/dbQRUqJM
