Last year, I started the course "An Introduction to Climate Change and Human Rights." It took me a while to complete. When I finished it, I didn't want it to end up as just one more certificate. As I began to explore my learning methods (I am a visual learner), I started to develop maps in different forms (mind maps, logic charts, tree charts, fishbone diagrams, matrix, etc.) with the various topics from the course: human rights impacts of climate change, climate negotiations, agreements, action, climate litigation, etc. The following pictures are examples of some maps showing how climate change interferes with the enjoyment of human rights. For a dynamic presentation and gallery, click the following link. https://rb.gy/afi8t0 I will continue sharing more about how human rights obligations require the international community to take more ambitious action to mitigate emissions and support adaptation, especially for vulnerable populations.

We are entering a new phase in corporate climate action, one defined by greater urgency to act, greater regulatory and litigation oversight, and greater scrutiny of corporate intentions and actions. In this context, the existing and emerging network of Climate Standard-Setting Organizations (CSSOs) is being called to play an even more central role in ensuring the legitimacy of corporate decarbonization programs. Join Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford Professor Karthik Ramanna for an introduction to the Governance Playbook for Climate Standard-Setting (https://lnkd.in/eHhVekNb), a strategic roadmap for navigating the evolving climate landscape. Professor Ramanna will be joined by BSR Managing Director, Climate and Nature David Wei. This webinar is highly recommended for climate executives in corporations and in CSSOs, as well as for climate activists, funders, regulators, and scientists. Climate reporters need tools for investigating offsets. So do reporters who cover local politics, land management, business, and other beats that aren’t always steeped in deep climate knowledge. At CarbonPlan, we developed a tool called OffsetsDB, an open-access platform that makes it easier to find and compare data from five of the largest offset registries – more than 9,000 individual offset projects. On July 9, we’ll be leading a webinar with The Journalist's Resource that will walk reporters through the basics of how the offsets industry works and how to use OffsetsDB as a tool to aid your reporting. Research scientist Grayson Badgley and editorial lead Maggie Koerth will answer your questions and help bring some clarity to this increasingly important field. Ambassador for Youth4Planet's CreatiVelo initiative | EU Climate Pact Ambassador | Market Intelligence | Project Management | ESG | Compliance & Due-Diligence | Business Development | Marketing
#Bookmark the 49:30 timestamp...when Journalist & News Host Juan González asks Dr Michael Mann: "...in your conversations with fellow scientists, what is the mood or the sense of how these attacks are affecting their ability to do their work?" Dr Mann's recent legal victory against defamatory attacks by ex-Fox News TV & ex-GB News host Mark Steyn+ is correct AND long over-due. Dr Mann's answer portends profound work in the United States. Here in Europe (especially the EU Climate Pact Benelux where I am humbled to be an ambassador) Disinformation and Misinformation are threats to the Energy Transition. Dr Mann's answer: "...what I fear is young scientists see these very visible attacks, these denunciations of their fellow scientists in the public sphere, and that sort of chills the public discourse. It makes them basically afraid to speak out and to speak up. And so, I do think that these attacks have had a chilling effect. And that was their intended impact. Of course, the climate change disinformation machine has used vilification as a way to intimidate scientists, to — again, to sort of — you know, to create fear that they’ll be attacked if they speak out about the implications of their science. That’s been going on for far too long. It’s now infected our entire body politic, where today misinformation and disinformation runs rampant. And when it comes to the great challenges we face, whether it be climate change or the public health threat of pandemics like COVID-19, it is absolutely essential that scientists feel free to speak to the public and to policymakers about these mounting threats. And I hope, once again, that this decision will create a little bit more space now for my fellow scientists to do that." Journalist and News Host Amy Goodman then asks Dr Mann: "And do you see your case setting precedent for political leaders who attack climate science — to attack climate science? And how badly were you injured? I mean, this horror of comparing you to this known molester who destroyed so many young men’s lives at Penn State." then Dr Mann's answer: "...there was an emotional toll that it took on me, for certain. You know, it didn’t prevent me from speaking out about the climate crisis. I have embraced that opportunity. My recent book, 'Our Fragile Moment', is my latest attempt to communicate the threat of climate change to the public and to policymakers. I’ve been able to do that. But at the same time, it’s taken an emotional toll and, once again, has sort of created this chilling effect, where other scientists, seeing me attacked in this way, have probably backed off and have shied away from the spotlight. And we all pay the price when scientists don’t feel empowered to speak out about the implications of their science." Watch the Q&A on Democracy Now! Famed climate scientist wins million-dollar verdict against right-wing bloggers - Washington Post 2/8/24 Climate scientist Michael Mann has won a legal battle against two bloggers who defamed him by claiming he manipulated data in his research and compared him to a convicted child molester. The jury in the civil trial found the bloggers guilty and awarded Mann over $1 million in damages. This verdict is seen as a victory for Mann and a message against attacking climate scientists. Mann, known for his "hockey stick" graph showing the impact of human activities on global temperatures, has been a frequent target of right-wing critics. Despite the challenges, he has become a prominent figure in the field and continues to advocate for addressing climate change. Perspective: Sound science and related data backed by evidence-based research and peer-reviewed studies are vital for human and ecological health and protection. Bullying and harassment have no place here as they not only undermine the integrity of scientific discourse but also hinder progress and dissemination of scientific knowledge and information. Challenges and concerns should be addressed within the language of science and its principles, fostering respectful dialogue and informed decision-making.

We're excited to announce the release of our new white paper: "Anatomy of a Climate Action Project." In the coming decades, small and medium-sized local governments will increasingly focus on a new category of work: climate action projects that are technology-enabled, but not technology-focused. These initiatives will require collaboration and engagement across traditional domains and jurisdictional boundaries as well as new models of project development and management that embed technology into the foundational processes of public service provision, emphasizing ecological outcomes and equitable public benefits. The white paper introduces a framework and associated set of tools, highlights connections to federal-level policy objectives and funding sources, and provides references for practitioners. Doom and gloom messages about climate change do well on social media 👍 but have limited effect on policy support, climate beliefs or action. New article shows how difficult it is to drive behaviour change on climate mitigation. 📖 For the article "Addressing Climate Change with Behavioral Science: A Global Intervention Tournament in 63 Countries" in Science Advances, the authors tested 11 interventions across almost 60,000 participants in over 60 countries on four climate mitigation outcomes: beliefs, policy support, information sharing intention, and action (measured as effort dedicated to planting trees 🌱). ➡ Beliefs were strengthened mostly by decreasing psychological distance (2.3%), policy support by writing a letter to a future-generation member (2.6%), information sharing by negative emotion induction (12.1%), whilst no intervention had a significant impact on increasing tree planting. ➡ No silver bullet for spurring climate action. Impact of behavioural climate interventions varies across audiences and target behaviours. Findings show how difficult it is to mobilise real, effortful action on climate change. 🌎 Conclusion: "Understanding how different messages work, and in what contexts, will be critical to changing beliefs, spreading the word, and mobilizing action" See journal article in Science Advances here ▶ https://lnkd.in/diFvXYcV See opinion article in Scientific American here ▶ https://lnkd.in/dysSw4Sr
