Offerings to the Kitchen God. In Chinese folk religion, the Kitchen God protects the hearth and family. At Chinese New Year he reports the activities of every household over the past year to the Jade Emperor, emperor of the heavens, who either rewards or punishes a family based on this yearly report. Sweets are offered to ensure that he will say sweet things in his report. Bribery and government snooping are ancient Chinese traditions.

Outside villages and by roads in the countryside of Hong Kong, you sometimes come across these little shrines. The bamboo slats have fu (talismans) painted onto them and offerings of rice and alcohol are offered. This is for hungry ghosts and wandering spirits, so as to placate them and avoid any supernatural misfortune from entering the village. Feeding these ghosts keeps them away and satisfies their needs.
