What do you struggle most with when throwing on the potters wheel? Some don’t even know their problem is caused by their opening technique. As covered in my last reel, if your pots are starting centred but somehow pulling off centre later, you may need to change your opening technique. That reel shows how to diagnose it, this one shows how to treat it. For starters, a thumb opening technique isn’t necessarily bad, but it does invite: 1) Slapping the whole-ass palm against the outside of the clay. You are not stabilizing the clay by doing this. You are creating friction. Friction is not your friend. 2) Pulling in two directions at once.
