Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer that lived in the late 1400's and early 1500's. He was the first explorer to sail around the world. On his second expedition, he was killed in the Philippines. He contributed to the history of marine biology by bringing back fish and other seafoods back to Portugal spreading knowledge about marine biology.
Ferdinand Magellan was the first person to lead an expedition around the entire world. In 1519, he and his crew set sail from Spain, went down around around South America, then crossed the Pacific Ocean to the Philippines. There, Magellan was seen by the native Filipinos as a threat and was killed. Still, his crew continued across the Indian Ocean, around Africa, and back to Spain.
