We all know that feeling of nostalgia when you reach back into your memories, to happier, simpler times when everything was easier. As most of us spent our childhoods and teenage years playing games, many titles are already unavailable or simply do not work on current setups due incompatibility with new devices. Hearing the news that some of the old goldies are brought back, makes hearts race. No wonder that when Age of Mythology: Retold debuted, many fans wanted to play it as soon as possible. However, there are players who encountered Initialization Failed error and crashes on launch, so here we will provide guidance on how to fix it and get back to the world of Greek gods.

Fixing Initialization Failed error and crashes in Age of Mythology Retold

Even though Age of Mythology Retold was generally received very warmly (basing on Steam reviews and metacritic) that doesn’t mean that it’s all roses. There are controversies regarding selling for considerable amount of money some legacy deity portraits. However, that’s not the biggest problem, as it is obviously not mandatory to buy it. What seems to be the most pressing issue is the fact of many Initialization Failed errors and crashes that some fans experience.

Fortunately, the way to fix it seems to be rather simple – all it takes is to (re)install Visual C++ Redistributable. It is recommended to try installing both x64 and x86 versions. Both of those installers can be found on official Microsoft site. Alternatively, you can try updating your Windows to the latest version (which most probably should carry those missing files, too). Moreover, some of the affected players have noticed that Rivatuner (MSI Afterburner) can interfere with the game.

Nonetheless, it is puzzling why during the game installation those vital components are not installed automatically. Steam maintains its library of Common Redistributables, however the developers have to explicitly opt-in to use it. It seems that creators from Xbox Games did a poor job configuring it on competitor’s and their own platform. Hopefully though, installing those missing libraries will fix the issue for you and allow you to relieve the great memories from the old times. Have fun!
