Assassin's Creed: Shadows Devs Clarified Issue of Character Choice. 'We're Not Really Strong-Arming Anyone to Switch Back and Forth'

For most of the time in Assassin's Creed: Shadows, you will be able to play one character of your choice. We can switch between Naoe and Yasuke at any time.

GamesRadar+ got the chance to have a conversation with Simon Lemay-Comtois, the assistant director of Assassin's Creed: Shadows, about the upcoming Ubisoft game. The dev emphasized that the game won't force players to switch between Yasuke and Naoe for the vast majority of the time. They will be able to decide for themselves who and when they will play.

If you want to be only one character, you can for most of the game. So we're not really strong-arming anyone to switch back and forth. [...] story missions that are particularly tailored made for one or the other, we don't specify who needs to be played at this moment, it's up to the players.

However, Lemay-Comtois mentioned that in the game we may encounter situations in which a specific character will be better suited. As an example, he mentioned a very dark cave occupied by a group of bandits. This environment is perfect for Naoe, who operates in hiding and will use the surroundings to silently eliminate enemies. However, nothing will stand in the way of stepping into Yasuke's shoes and playing it a bit more directly.

The developer's comment was obtained after yesterday's extensive Ubisoft Forward showcase. There, gameplay recordings from AC: Shadows, which presents the gameplay differences between the two characters. If you are interested, we encourage you to check them out.

Assassin's Creed: Shadows will be released on November 15 this year on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
