Ghost of Tsushima Enjoys Strong Acclaim on Steam. Partial PSN Requirement Didn't Hurt Sony's Hit

Despite concerns, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut scored a very successful launch on PC. The partial requirement for a PSN account didn't prevent the game from gathering good reviews and cranking out impressive activity scores.

Yesterday, Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut, a port of one of the best exclusives from PlayStation consoles, finally debuted on PC. After a few hours since the premiere, it is already evident that the release has been a success. The title remains in first place on the Steam bestseller list.

Players are happy with the PC edition of Ghost of Tsushima

The game has 84% positive reviews on Steam, which the platform categorizes as a "very positive" reception of the game. The folks at Sony must have breathed a sigh of relief when they saw this result.

  1. There were concerns before the premiere that players would have a very negative reaction to the requirement of having a PlayStation Network account for multiplayer mode. This solution recently led to review bombing in the case of Helldivers 2 - so effective that the publisher had to withdraw from this decision. After this victory (although not yet full), some players hoped that they would be able to force Sony to make a similar change in the PC Ghost of Tsushima, but this failed.
  2. However, it's clear that most Steam users don't mind, which isn't surprising since it's primarily a single-player game, and the requirement for a PSN account has been known for a long time, whereas in the case of Helldivers 2, the game launched without it (it was only an option).

Unfortunately, even though players have given positive opinions about Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut on PC, the issue with PSN still exists, leading to the game being pulled from sale in over a hundred countries.

Regarding the players' complaints; in addition to the typical issues affecting many recent debut games (such as stuttering and game freezes), some people have reported problems with duels that are bugged and not functioning properly. However, it seems that resetting the duel several times is sufficient to resolve the issue. In response to an inquiry from one of the players, Nixxes studio - the developer of the PC version of GoT - replied that they were looking into the matter and initially concluded that it may be related to the high frame rate.

Excellent activity results

The PC Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut not only receives good reviews, but also achieves impressive activity results. Yesterday, 57,934 players were simultaneously enjoying the title on Steam at the peak of the premiere. It should be emphasized that this impressive result doesn't fully reflect the game's popularity, because it is also available in the Epic Games Store.

Among the exclusives from PlayStation consoles that Sony ported to PC, only God of War and Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered have higher activity records (73,000 and 73,000, respectively and 66,000 players simultaneously). We are curious whether Ghost of Tsushima will be able to outpace these games this weekend.

On the day of its premiere, the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima: Director's Cut broke the activity records of such hits as Horizon: Zero Dawn, Horizon: Forbidden West, or The Last of Us: Part 1. Helldivers 2 remains the top game among those released by Sony, with 458,000 players simultaneously. However, unlike the other titles, this game was released simultaneously on PC and PS5, rather than being ported to PCs long after its console premiere.
