The Gutter is a 2024 American comedy film written by Yassir Lester, directed by Yassir Lester and Isaiah Lester and starring Shameik Moore and Susan Sarandon.[1]
Plot
[edit]Walt gets a job at the AlleyCatz bowling alley. He is forced to accept his talent as a bowler, prompting backlash from his detractors who seek to undermine his professional success.

Release
[edit]The film premiered at South by Southwest on March 12, 2024.[1] In August 2024, Magnolia Pictures acquired North American distribution rights to the film, scheduling it for a simultaneous release in theaters and video on demand on November 1, 2024.[2]
Reception
[edit]The film has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on seven reviews.[3] Matt Donato of Collider rated the film a 7 out of 10.[1] Lovia Gyarkye of The Hollywood Reporter gave the film a positive review and wrote, "...The Gutter — like an early Paul Beatty novel — seems destined to be a cult classic."[4] Stephen Saito of Variety also gave the film a positive review and wrote, "Laughter strikes from all sides in The Gutter, the kind of brash and boisterous broad comedy that has largely been missing from multiplexes in recent years."[5] Fletcher Peters of The Daily Beast gave the film a negative review and wrote, "But all in all, do these bonkers, fantastical edits to the game of bowling make The Gutter a fun, farcical ride? Well, also no."[6]
