Punknews.org and Gorilla Biscuits

[edit]

Punknews.org allows users to submit news and thus fails at being a reliable source. See here for an old discussion on the matter. Cheers, --SVTCobra 23:25, 15 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) SVTCobra, just because a website allows such a thing doesn't mean it's outright unreliable, just those writers. Staff reviews are distinctive on Punknews. dannymusiceditor oops 00:43, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
True but Wikipedia requires WP:RS and WP:V. You are free to raise the issue at WP:RSN. Cheers, and punk is not dead! --SVTCobra 02:32, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and the links provided were not for the purpose of reviews, but rather facts about the band. Cheers, --SVTCobra 02:42, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Do me a favor and look at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Tell All Your Friends/archive1. We put extensive research into the reliability of this website. dannymusiceditor oops 03:09, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Which website? Wikipedia or Punknews? What are you on about? Why do I need to look at that archive? Explain yourself, please. Oh, and who are "we"? --SVTCobra 05:11, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

If you'd take a look at it, you'd figure it out. Pardon me if this is bad faith, but this looks to me like you're actually trying to be counter-productive. "We" refers to me and MusicforthePeople, both of us worked on this FAC and provided backgrounds for sources which includes Punknews. dannymusiceditor oops 05:47, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, it is a large page, but again, I only see people saying use Punknews for reviews only. Furthermore, I don't see how it specifically relates to the Gorilla Biscuits page and the two recommended citations which were both over 15 years old and had barely any information. You are indeed incorrect if you think I am trying to be counter-productive. I am only talking about the Gorilla Biscuits article and if you want to continue, we should do it at Talk:Gorilla Biscuits. --SVTCobra 06:09, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The Artist in the Ambulance

[edit]
MusicforthePeople, the second sentence in the second paragraph of "Background is confusing: "Giberga, who also enjoyed New York hardcore, said while Epic had no interest in signing Thrice, he acted as an adviser to Bogardus and the band on which A&R people was and was not worth their time talking to." I've marked this text with [clarify]. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 23:06, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's fine; I think I've parsed it correctly and have changed the sentence to "Giberga, who also enjoyed New York hardcore, said while Epic had no interest in signing Thrice, he advised Bogardus and the band which A&R people were worth talking to". Feel free to correct that if I'm incorrect. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 00:26, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MusicforthePeople. I've done a GA review for The Good Will Out, which I feel is a useful and informative article on one of my favourite albums. My wife and I felt at the time of release of this album that Embrace would become "the next big thing" - sadly that never happened.

Anyway, it appears to me that the article meets GA criteria apart from the requirements for the lead (which is a surprisingly common event). I've made notes in the review which indicate what I feel needs to be done. Always open to discussion, and always willing to help out. Anyway, review on hold for now until concerns are resolved. Heya. The new name threw me off. Do you have any tips for writing GAs about albums? Catch for Us the Foxes or (A→B) Life is on my radar because it is mewithoutYou's last year. -- Guerillero Parlez Moi 22:09, 20 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Guerillero: What advice would you like specifically? The Albums Wikiproject has a style guide and list of sources that might be of use. I usually start by searching "BANDNAME" "ALBUM NAME" review on google and corralling the reviews/interviews by adding them to the talk page with the Refideas template. From there, I check tags/categories on websites like Rock Sound or Alt Press and add the relevant posts. If it's the second or third album, I would look at the previous one to see if there's anything useful I could use for the background, e.g. using some of the release/reception section of Vehicles & Animals by Athlete for their next album Tourist. If you don't have a physical copy of the album, Discogs usually has scans of the booklet to help with recording info.[1] Just make sure to cite it as AV media notes, not directly link to Discogs as the website is WP:USERGEN content. I'd recommend using a couple of my recent album GAs, Vehicles & Animals by Athlete and Owls by Owls, as inspiration. MusicforthePeople (talk) 07:52, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

STWHA Edits

[edit]

I just reviewed your edits to Something to Write Home About, and they are INVALUABLE. Thank you so much for your help!! I was on vacation and was throwing in material on my iPad (not an interface I'd recommend!) with the hope of editing it once I got back, but you did absolutely beautiful work.

I'm going to keep combing through some sources and material I've bookmarked and try to flesh out some bits. (I was thinking of expanding the prose slightly in the lyrics section, but I need to look at a few other FA-level album articles to see best practices.) What do you think the main areas of need are in the article going forward? It's also been several years since I did a major edit pass on the band's page, and I've been thinking of going through that when I have time. I'd love your input! Thanks again, Rwiggum (Talk/Contrib) 04:27, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Rwiggum: Hey, thanks! I did a lot of expansion on their album articles (personally, I prefer albums over band articles) in the lead up to the release of Problems, but never got round to finishing them to my intended goal of GA level. When I saw your edits pop up in my watchlist (which were helpful!), I decided to see what I hadn't done and work on that. In the case of STWHA, that meant the composition/lyrics and reception sections. Wasn't sure if you thought I was hijacking it from under you as I can get too "in the zone" when editing. As of writing this, I plan to dig out my copy of the album, wherever it is, for the liner notes. Apart from that, the only other major things are: the lead would need expanding, and the publications in the ref templates need linking at first instance.
After that, I list articles I've finished expanding at GOCE/R for ce-ing, though it seems like the queue is coming up to three months. I have two in the queue already (that's the limit, unfortunately), so it would take sometime before I can list STWHA there. I would be happy to give you co-nom credit when I eventually nominate it (and the other TGUK albums) for GA. In terms of FA quality writing, DannyMusicEditor and myself took Tell All Your Friends by Taking Back Sunday to FA earlier this year. While a few of the sources are fine for GA level, some of them won't stand up to the scrutiny of FAC commenters. It took a lot of effort from Danny and myself to convince other users that Punknews.org was an acceptable source for TAYF. I mainly stick to GAs because of that as I don't think the information lost is worth it for a bronze star. Hope all of this helps. MusicforthePeople (talk) 08:11, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No need to worry about hijacking, all of your edits were extremely helpful and it's always great to get another set of eyes. I got the band's article to GA status years ago, but now looking at it with my current eyes I see a lot of stuff that bothers me, haha. And I saw your work on Tell All Your Friends! I've been taking a lot of cues from that and Bleed American as I expand so they've been really helpful. In the next couple of weeks I have a bunch of podcast episodes backlogged that I'm going to listen to and pull some more info from.
In your experience, what kind of info gets lost when putting an article up for FA status? What were the biggest things you had to pull from TAYF, for instance? Rwiggum (Talk/Contrib) 17:57, 26 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rwiggum: Some of the finer, specific things such as dates/months, in addition to TV appearances and other acts the band toured with could be lost. Those kind of details, I feel, can help establish a better timeline alongside fleshing out release and touring sections greatly. If we had to remove all the Punknews.org refs from TAYF, the article would have been worse for it. One important piece that I'd hate to have omitted was the specific month Fred Mascherino was announced as a member of TBS.
We didn't have to scrap too much from TAYF thankfully, and what was removed mainly amounted to a genre classification and a small quote, as well as ditching one AllMusic ref. We were questioned on long-term publications such as CMJ and Rock Sound, both of which we thought wouldn't need substantiating, but commenters felt otherwise. If CMJ had to go, we'd lose a review that added a nice bit of legacy-related content. At the failed Bleed American FAC, we were questioned about Jimmy Eat World's own news page, and that would have been a great loss of touring detail. Lovelife (album) talk notes.

[edit]

Saw you added a possible reference to the talk page for Lovelife (album) that was from one-time Pitchfork reviewer, Chris Ott. To make you aware, if you are not already, but Chris Ott was a massively toxic reviewer whose reviews were so nasty and contentious, and with no value, that Condé Nast deleted all of his content from Pitchfork when they acquired Pitchfork. Thanks for adding potential references, but just wanted to clarify why that stuff is no longer live on Pitchfork’s main site. Giacomo1968 (talk) 14:57, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Giacomo1968: Thanks for the heads up, but the Lovelife review is credited to Ryan Schreiber, not Ott. MusicforthePeople (talk) 15:18, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Err… This is the link I am talking about. The “Castoffs and Cutouts” pile of poison pen reviews. Anyway, just a heads up that any Chris Ott review should be looked at a very cynical eye at best; the guy just trashed things to trash things. --Giacomo1968 (talk) 15:47, 9 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am happy to put the nomination back into the pool of nominations awaiting a review with no loss of seniority, since it hasn't attracted anyone with the second opinion request. @Ohnoitsjamie: Er, it's not spam, they're refs for future inclusion in the article. They're newsposts reporting on aspects relating to the topic. MusicforthePeople (talk) 15:42, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It's not appropriate to systematically canvass links to a site all over the place; for one, it gives the impression of a possible confict-of-interest; secondly, as noted above on your talk page, punknews is a questionable in terms of reliable sources in that anyone can submit a news item. OhNoitsJamie Talk 15:46, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ohnoitsjamie: Isn't the point of looking through a website to find articles/posts that can be used as potential sources? @DannyMusicEditor: and myself have managed to get the website accepted at two FACs successfully. MusicforthePeople (talk) 15:52, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can understand why you think using it so often might be COI, but it is not so questionable. PN is a treasure trove of information on bands that don't get talked about by other publications; that's why you see it pop up so often from this user - there's no real other (or better) option in many, many cases. Don't let that set off any alarm bells, though. We made sure to do our research on the publication's staff ahead of time. We started explaining it in our first FAC, then made a RSN post about it; granted, we initially saw resistance, but when we presented evidence to the contrary of the opposes, we got radio silence. We then used it in our second and most recent FAC, where we explained its use again, and sold it. Obviously anything that is user-submitted is not suitable for Wikipedia, conflicting with WP:USERG. As noted above, what is allowable and what is not is distinctively shown on each post as staff material. Do you really think someone with two featured articles and 70+ good articles in the content area would really be so naïve to use sources such as these without caution? Nevertheless, we do our best to limit use of this where it is possible, but PN covers many up-close details many sources on the 'net do not. dannymusiceditor oops 16:48, 20 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Noticed you're doing up the Spartacus article, nice work! Just asking if you have the original NME and Melody Maker reviews, and if not, would you like them? Sorry for being a bit late! Here's NME and here's the Maker. I've also found the Record Mirror review at page 20 here. And The Farm also have a big feature in this issue. Sorry for never getting back to you about Wah Wah btw, I should try compiling some useful sources and reworked prose for that at some point.--TangoTizerWolfstone (talk) 14:04, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@TangoTizerWolfstone: No worries at all, thanks again for these! It's fine re:Wah Wah; I had planned to have more of their albums at GA by now, but I ended up being distracted with other articles and then forgetting altogether. MusicforthePeople (talk) 15:05, 4 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MusicforthePeople, I found in the third paragraph of "Writing and label signing" the sentence: "It peaked at number one on the UK Independent Singles Chart; the band sold all of the copies they had within a week, prompting [missing name] to put his house up for payment so he could press more copies." I've tagged it with {{who?}} as I can't easily check the cited texts, which are both books, for the missing name. I think that's the only major problem I had with this article. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Futures (album)), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page.
