"Sooo, you think you can outrace a veteran pilot like me? I’d like to see you try it!"
―Gypsy Moth in LEGO Racers

Gypsy Moth,[1][2] known as Navigator Sharp (or Navigatør Sharp) in Denmark,[3][2] Germany,[4] Australia,[5] and LEGO Adventures! Magazine, Insector 2 in the UK catalogs, and Ann Droid in Rocket Racers,[6] is a Minifigure of the Insectoids theme, introduced in 1998.

Description[]

Gypsy Moth has a bright blue skin colour, has black hair, and wears a black, bright blue, and dark grey spacesuit with dark grey shoulder armor and a transparent fluorescent green Insectoids helmet.

In LEGO Racers, Gypsy Moth does not wear her transparent fluorescent green helmet. This is likely due to the game's inability to render transparency; if they had included the helmet, her face would have been obscured. In renders for LEGO Racers and Rocket Racers, her hands are bright yellow instead of bright blue, although this does not reflect her in-game model.

Background[]

In most regions (including Denmark, the UK, and Germany), Navigator Sharp is a member of a party of Zotaxians who crash-land on the planet Holox (alternatively known as Armeron) and must fight to survive by collecting voltstones. She acts as an ace pilot and has excellent aim. This storyline is shown in Insectoids Invasion - An Interactive Puzzle Book and various LEGO Adventures! Magazine comics.

In Time Cruisers, Navigator Sharp and Techno Leon assist Tim Timebuster and Ingo when they arrive on Armeron. Since the Insectoids' chief pilot was injured, Navigator Sharp requests Tim's help piloting the Hornet Protector and evading the planet's Bilgin Bugs. She accompanies him while piloting the Vespular Stinger. When the Bilgin Bugs break the Hornet Protector, Sharp informs Tim that it can reassemble. Upon reaching the inner world of Armeron, Sharp suspects that there is alien life in the Aquazone.

In the US, Gypsy Moth is the queen of the Insectoids, who are portrayed as mischievous alien invaders. This contradicts other versions of the storyline, which portray Captain Wizer as the leader. However, with the exception of Danish, all languages of LEGO Racers feature the character in this role; most languages retain her US name, while Italian (Falena Regina degli Insettoidi), Spanish (Reina Insectoide), and Norwegian (Insekt-Dronningen) continue to refer to her as the Insectoids' queen.

In The Adventures of the LEGO Maniac: The Incredible Insectoid Invasion!, the Insectoids invade Earth in a crossover with Scooby-Doo. Shaggy Rogers and Scooby-Doo lure the Insectoids through the LEGO Maniac's portal to another galaxy, and Gypsy Moth vows to get them next time. In An Adventurous Holiday, Gypsy Moth pilots the 6977 Arachnoid Star Base and grapples with Johnny Thunder over an Energy Orb, and then is defeated when the LEGO Maniac builds a Res-Q super spider fighter and flips over the Arachnoid Star Base.

LEGO Racers[]

Gypsy Moth is the leader of the sixth and penultimate circuit. Her race car is made up of parts from both the UFO and Insectoids themes. Her introductory cutscene opens as a UFO flies overhead and beams her down to the Alien Rally Asteroid track, where she scoffs at the player's intentions to beat her. Her minifigure and car parts are unlocked upon beating her in Circuit 6.

In Rocket Racers, Ann Droid drives her Speed Dragster in the qualifying race shown in the queue line video. Throughout the race, announcer Barry Baloney emphasizes her incredible speed.[6]

Insectoid Queen, Gypsy Moth

As Insectoid queen, Gypsy rules the Insectoids in the 6969 Celestial Stinger. She has one strange habit--flying toward the sun and other bright objects. Gypsy is also a fine musician and likes to jam with the Stinger's sound keys.

Insectoid Queen
Gypsy Moth, the Insectoid Queen, loves the bright holiday lights. She just bugs the other Insectoids as she noisily munches popcorn balls while buzzing from light to light.

Notes[]

  • The character's US name, Gypsy Moth, is the common name of a real world species of moth, Lymantria dispar.
  • She is one of the few female Space minifigures, along with Doctor Kelvin and Ann Droid, during the theme's original run from 1978 to 1998.
  • In the German September/October 1998 issue and Australian Number 2 1998 issue of World Club Magazine, the names and appearances of Zotaxians are mixed up. In this case, Professor Webb's minifigure is mistakenly used to represent Navigator Sharp, whose minifigure in turn is misidentified as Techno Leon.[5][4]
  • Oddly, she is called "Ann Droid" in Rocket Racers despite that name belonging to a different character from Exploriens and LEGO Racers.
