The TemPad is a multifunctional device used by the members of the Time Variance Authority to make interdimensional travels through space and time.

Background[]

The TemPad is a multifunctional device used by the members of the Time Variance Authority and its main purpose is to open Time Doors, interdimensional orange colored portals that can transport the user to other points of time and space. This allows the user to travel to different points on the timeline and even to the TVA headquarters, which is situated outside the space and time of the Sacred Timeline. Despite this, a normal TemPad cannot take the user to the end of time, as there is just a void there with nothing that the device would be able to lock on to. The only TemPad capable of opening Time Doors to the end of time is a modified TemPad which once belonged to He Who Remains, the creator of the TVA. The TemPad needs to be recharged after some time in use, requiring a massive power source to be able to make the interdimensional travels again.

Among other functions of the device is recording videos, projecting images, downloading files. Many members of the TVA have a TemPad, which they also use to monitor the branched timelines, to communicate and call each other when they are separated, to identify Variants, and to archive their mission reports. In addition, the TemPad can be connected to devices to control prisoners, the Time Twisters and also the Time Collars which are put around their necks. Using the TemPad, the TVA workers can summon Miss Minutes, the artificial intelligence that is the mascot of the TVA. TemPads can also control red colored portals which lead to Time Cells, prisons that trap the individual inside a loop based on a memory from their past. When the TemPad is lost, the members of the TVA might provide another one, as seen with Ravonna Renslayer, who had her TemPad stolen more than once but appears carrying another one shortly after.

TemPads can be tracked by the TVA to know the location of their owners, except when the device is rigged in order to block the tracking. They can also be modified in order ways such as to open several Time Doors simultaneously. Such modifications as well as all information about TemPads are described in the TVA Guidebook, an index created by Ouroboros.

Marvel Cinematic Universe[]

Loki[]

Season One[]

TemPads are seen being used by the members of the Time Variance Authority to travel to various points in time to capture Variants and fix the mistakes in the predetermined path of the Sacred Timeline. Hunter B-15 is seen more than once checking her TemPad during missions to see if the branched timeline is already past red line, which it is when the TVA is no longer able to erase the branch.

During a mission at church at Aix-En-Provence, France, 1549, when Agent Mobius meets a French boy, a bystander of the attack on the Minutemen unit, he uses his TemPad to draw a two dimensional animated image as a way to be friendly to him. At the TVA, when he is explaining to the others about the Loki Variants just before they go to the field, he uses his TemPad to project images with the information of the many Lokis that the TVA pruned previously.

Sylvie has a TemPad which she uses to travel to apocalypses at different points in time and be able to hide from the TVA without creating branched timelines. In the apocalypse of the Roxxcart superstore, when the TVA comes after her, Sylvie connects her TemPad with the reset charges that she stole from the organization, then sets the device to work as a timer to open several Time Doors and send all the reset charges to different points in time when the count down is over, bombarding the Sacred Timeline and creating many branches.

When Sylvie meets Loki, he grabs her TemPad and transports the two of them to somewhere else to escape from Judge Ravonna Renslayer, accidentally taking them to the apocalypse of Lamentis-1. There, Sylvie recovers her device, but when she tries to teleport herself, she sees that it needs to be recharged. After Loki takes the TemPad from her and hides it with magic, she decides to work with him to search for a power source to charge her TemPad and escape Lamentis, but they find nothing in the nearest town.

The duo decides to steal the power source of the evacuation Ark that will take off from Lamentis to charge the TemPad. However, when they board a train to the Ark, Loki gets drunk and is involved in a fight with the guards, which results in him being thrown off the train. Right after, when she demands him to return her TemPad, he summons it only to see that the device was destroyed during his fall and they will not be able to use it to escape the apocalypse. Later, a flashback reveals that a young Sylvie had stolen her TemPad from Ravonna who was still working as the Hunter A-23. Ravonna had brought Sylvie to the TVA to be judged for her crimes against the Sacred Timeline, but the little girl managed to grab her TemPad and escape through a Time Door.

After the TVA found and captured Sylvie and Loki on Lamentis, Mobius punishes Loki, using his TemPad to open a Time Cell and throwing him inside it. Mobius later swaps his own TemPad with Ravonna's without her noticing, when he becomes suspicions of her and wants to check Hunter C-20's profile after hearing from Loki that all the members of the TVA are Variants. Mobius sees that C-20 is listed as deceased on Ravonna's TemPad. However, he then he finds a video with the mission debrief with C-20, which shows that she had found out about herself and the other members of the TVA being Variants, showing that Loki was right and that Ravonna lied about C-20 dying, because she actually had been pruned for knowing too much. Ravonna later discovers that Mobius swapped the TemPads and has the Minutemen prune him, sending him to the Void for knowing the truth. When Ravonna takes Sylvie and Loki to face the Time Keepers, Hunter B-15, who also had learned the truth, uses her TemPad to free the pair from their Time Collars.

Afterwards, when Loki is sent to the Void and tries to figure out a way to return to the TVA, he asks the other Variants of himself about using a TemPad. The other Lokis reply that a TemPad would be a way to leave the Void, but there is none around. At the TVA, while Sylvie demands answers from Ravonna, she asks if there is a way to get to beyond the Void at the end of time, where she thinks the true ruler of the TVA is hiding. Ravonna tells her that it is impossible to use a TemPad to get there, because there is nothing that the device would lock on to. Sylvie eventually takes Ravonna's TemPad and prunes herself to go find Loki in the Void. She later gives this TemPad to Mobius, who uses it to return to the TVA.

Ravonna is later seen summoning the mascot of the TVA, Miss Minutes, using her TemPad. She asks Miss Minutes to have acess to the files about the founding of the TVA and beginning of time from her. Miss Minutes later returns and downloads some files to Ravonna's TemPad, but the judge complains that the files are not the ones she requested. Miss Minutes just states that these are the ones that will be useful to her and then disappears after wishing her a good reading.

He Who Remains, the creator of the TVA, has a very advanced and modified TemPad, which is actually combined with other devices of the TVA. His TemPad can loop individuals to their previous position in a location, which is the function of the TVA's Time Twister. He is seen using this function to loop himself and escape from Sylvie's machete when she tries to attack him inside the elevator at the Citadel at the End of Time. He Who Remains also uses his TemPad to project three dimensional figures of himself and his Variants while telling Sylvie and Loki the story of the Multiversal War and the creation of the TVA. Later, when Loki attempts to stop Sylvie from killing He Who Remains, she kisses him but then uses He Who Remains' TemPad to open a Time Door to the TVA and pushes him through it, although she is unaware that he ends up being sent to the TVA in the past.

Season Two[]

After Sylvie pushed him through a Time Door, Loki starts to time slip, being randomly pulled between the past and the present, and the future. Loki thinks that this was the result of Sylvie using He Who Remains' TemPad. After killing He Who Remains, Sylvie took his TemPad with her when she left the Citadel. It remains in her possession and she occasionally uses it to travel between timelines.

Because Ravonna went missing, the TVA attempts to track her TemPad to locate her. Casey, who in charge of tracking the judge, discovers that the last message Ravonna received on her TemPad was from Miss Minutes, who is also missing, and deduces that the mascot is helping the judge. Later on, he eventually manages to locate her. At the same time, General Dox and Hunter X-5 leave to find Sylvie with a group Minutemen, but Dox and her loyalists are secretly preparing to prune all the new branches, which were resulted from the Sacred Timeline branching off after He Who Remains' death. Dox's group modify their TemPads and the TVA is no longer able to track them. Loki, who is trying to locate Sylvie since they were separated at the Citadel, decides to go after them. He and the TVA capture X-5 and interrogate him about Sylvie's whereabouts and the modifications made to his TemPad. Brad lies that his TemPad was rigged to block TVA tracking.

The TVA later figures out Dox's true plan to bomb the branches. Dox uses many rigged TemPads connected to Time Doors and a control panel, allowing the Minutemen to quickly bomb the timelines with reset charges. Dox's attack is interrupted by Loki, Sylvie and Mobius, as the trio defeats the Minutemen and destroys their TemPads and the control panel, but not before many of the branches are pruned.

Deadpool & Wolverine[]

Deadpool steals one from Paradox to find a variant of Wolverine as a replacement anchor being for Earth-10005 his after learning that his Wolverine had died. After traveling to various universes for a suitable variant, he returns to the TVA headquarters with, unbeknownst to him, the "worst" variant that was in a comic-inspired suit before being sent to the Void when he discovers about Paradox's having been underwraps.
