Map of Scotland in Scots

[edit]

Hi there. though apparently a reliable source, the Map of Scotland in Scots is a bizarre collection which in substantial part consists of spurious, invented, supposedly-Scots terms, with little or no currency, with the conventional term often the regular Scots term and incorrectly characterised as being somehow "English". It is sometimes correct but overall it is not reliable. I've no idea what they were thinking of when they drew it up.

Also, please do not mark edits as "minor" unless they fit that definition, which has very specific and narrow definition on Wikipedia, per WP:MINOR. Please familiarise yourself with this. Mutt Lunker (talk) 10:21, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I will do more research on local names instead of relying on that map as much. Also, I'll look at the definition of minor edits. Sorry about that. Cheers. YoungstownToast (talk) 19:19, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I'm concerned that you appear to have changed a number of articles while using this; https://d3lmsxlb5aor5x.cloudfront.net/library/document/Map_of_Scotland_in_Scots-Guide_and_gazetteer.pdf, as a source. While it appears to be a publication from the Scots Language Centre, it is being hosted on a random Amazon cloudfront server of uncertain ownership. So there really is no guarantee of its authenticity. Do you not have a link directly from https://www.scotslanguage.com/ ? Thanks. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 12:11, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have no idea why they decided to host it on that server, but I accessed it from their regular website so I believe it to be authentic. I accessed it from here: https://www.scotslanguage.com/articles/node/id/832 YoungstownToast (talk) 19:19, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

Hi. You said I "Vandalized" a page but all I did was clarify and try to alphabetize. Please explain what you are referring to? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.7.11.178 (talk) 00:18, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, what I referred to as vandalism was your removal of some references and content without an explanation. YoungstownToast (talk) 00:23, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please be more specific so I do not have to guess which you are referring to. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.7.11.178 (talk) 01:26, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
YoungstownToast, it seems as if you may have confused moving around sections and references to be removal of those sections and references. If you look at the diffs of those edits, you'll find some moving of sections and the addition of content and references. There is one edit where the user removed some content, but in my view it seems helpful. It definitely isn't vandalism or disruptive. Best regards, Vermont (talk) 01:31, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Vermont, thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.7.11.178 (talk) 01:36, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes. I see what I did wrong. Thank you very much for pointing that out. Very sorry about that. YoungstownToast (talk) 02:33, 6 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Poland, ohio

[edit]

Your description of how Poland got that name is based on a faulty reference and should be deleted. See the Everything Poland Facebook page for comments about this. Also, your choice of a photo is not well received as there are better choices. 24.239.76.12 (talk) 02:24, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@24.239.76.12: Hello, it is not "my" description, I had nothing to do with that information being on there or the reference that was used. Unless my memory fails me, the only edit I've made on Poland, Ohio was to fix an incorrect wikilink. However, I will make sure to look into this and try to find a more accurate source if possible. As for the photo, that cannot really be helped. In most circumstances we can only use photos that are in the public domain, but I'll try to find some better photos. Also, please feel free to upload any photos you may have of Poland to Wikimedia Commons for use in articles. Thanks. --YoungstownToast (talk) 04:10, 28 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism

[edit]

It seems that someone has posted edits using the same IP address as me. It said I have a new message, then it said "a contribution you made was removed". I never edited any pages. I just read Wikipedia. Be advised that some edits may appear as if someone else is doing them, and there is IP spoofing going on. (I am a noob with Wikipedia syntax so forgive my lack of formatting) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 208.98.223.65 (talk) 23:38, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I'm not sure what exactly could be the cause of this, it could just be someone else on your WiFi network making edits. You should create an account in case the IP address gets blocked in the future. You can make one here. --YoungstownToast (talk) 00:02, 28 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
