Scuttle (2023)

Scuttle is a major character in the 2023 remake of The Little Mermaid.

She is a gannet who is one of Ariel's closest friends and a self-proclaimed expert on humans. Scuttle works with Sebastian and Flounder in bringing Ariel and Eric together.

Scuttle is voiced by the actress Awkwafina, who also played Ming Fleetfoot (Spencer Gilpin and Eddie Gilpin's avatar) in Jumanji: The Next Level, Otto in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, Sisu in Raya and the Last Dragon, Courtney in The Angry Birds Movie 2, Katy Chen in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Ms. Tarantula in The Bad Guys, Rebecca in Renfield, Chump in Migration, and Zhen in Kung Fu Panda 4.

Biography[]

Scuttle is first seen driving for food in the water, scaring Flounder. After eating a fish, Scuttle dives down, and Ariel shows her a fork she discovered on a sinking ship. Scuttle experiments with the fork and misinformed her that it was an instrument called a dinglehopper and humans use it to brush their hair. When Ariel attempts to show her another his artifact, Ariel, Scuttle and flounder are interrupted by Sebastian, who scolds the mermaid princess for being late for the Coral Moon. Scuttle says farewell to her friends as she, Flounder and Sebastian hurry to the palace.

After Ariel saves the life of Prince Eric, Scuttle appears again, with Sebastian telling her that they will keep this information away from King Triton. However, Scuttle forgets, with Sebastian commenting that he is a dead crab. Later on, Scuttle attempted to help Ariel fall in love with her love interest by singing which was unsuccessful. During the musical number "Kiss the Girl", Scuttle sings with Sebastian and Flounder encouraging Eric to fall in love and kiss Ariel only for Flotsam and Jetsam to knock the couple off the boat.

On the third day, Scuttle heard rumors of Eric wanting to propose, much to Ariel's surprise. Assuming it was Ariel, but it was actually Ursula (disguised as Vanessa). Later, Scuttle sees that "Vanessa " is none other than Ursula in disguise upon seeing her reflection on the mirror, warns Ariel and Sebastian. Scuttle knows she has to stop the proposal between Ursula and Eric. She cause a commotion at the wedding giving Ariel time to arrive. After Ariel confronts Vanessa, she breaks Ursula's necklace to free Eric from hypnosis and regain her voice.

After Ursula is defeated, Ariel marries Eric, she then bids a farewell to Scuttle, Sebastian, and Flounder as Ariel and Eric start to travel around the world.

Personality[]

Scuttle is a self-proclaimed expert on humans; but it is the exact opposite. She never call household objects by their proper name and gets their functions confused. For example, Scuttle mistakes a fork as a "dinglehopper" and claims people uses at to brush their hair. Additionally, it took her a few moments to realize Ariel was given legs until Sebastian pointed it out. However, Scuttle retains her sense of humor.

She is loyal to her friends, such as bring Ariel and Eric closer together and later warning her friends that "Vanessa" is the sea-witch in disguise.

Trivia[]

As opposed to Scuttle's animated counterpart, Scuttle was changed into a female gannet instead of a seagull in order for the character to appear in underwater scenes.
- Also, unlike the original movie, Ariel is the one who shattered Ursula's shell instead of it shattering when Scuttle ripped the necklace off Ursula's neck after Max bites her rear.
Due to Disney placing a ban on smoking, Scuttle never calls a smoke pipe a "snarflatt".
Unlike the original, Scuttle gains the musical number "The Scuttlebutt".
The Little Mermaid and Migration, both of which Awkwafina starred in, came out in 2023.
- Ironically, both her characters (Scuttle and Chump) are birds.
It is unknown if, Scuttle's full is "Scuttlebutt" just like her animated counterpart or if her name is just only "Scuttle" in the 2023 live-action remake.
