Deadmen (デッドマン, Deddoman) are demons created by the Deadmans using Proto Vistamps.

Overview[]

A Deadman is the result of a person's inner demon being materialized using the power of a Proto Vistamp. As each person's inner demon is different, only some can produce a Deadman, whereas most people are only able to create a Giff Junior. To create a Deadman, one of the generals of Deadmans either stamps an eligible person with a Proto Vistamp or convinces the person to use it on themselves. At that point, the person's inner demon is released in the form of a paper contract that folds into a Deadman with the attributes of the animal contained within the Vistamp's genetic information. If a Deadman is destroyed, it can be recreated so long as the contract holder still possesses the Proto Vistamp used to create it. People who have produced Deadmen are recommended treatment at a rehabilitation facility under the jurisdiction of Fenix.

Phase 2[]

The contract holder can also elevate the contract with their Deadman and merge with it, giving them greater power and creating a Phase 2 (フェーズ2, Fēzu 2) Deadman with the host in control. However, this comes with the risk of the host not being able to return to human form. Although Deadmans initially thought that the Phase 2 transformation was irreversible, George Karizaki revealed that a Rider Kick can separate the host from the Deadman. It is possible a contract holder can go straight to a Phase 2 contract by simply stamping the Proto Vistamp onto their body, as seen with Yasushi Kudo transforming straight into the Sabertiger Deadman Phase 2 without releasing his inner demon.

Gifftex/Phase 3[]

Even fewer people have the potential to evolve from a Phase 2 Deadmen to one of the six sacrifices required for the revival of Giff, referred to as a Gifftex (ギフテクス, Gifutekusu), or Phase 3 (フェーズ3, Fēzu 3). To do so, the individual must go through a ritual called Selection (選択, Sentaku) in which Giff personally evaluates them. If they fail, they disappear. A Gifftex permanently becomes one with their Deadman form, so they are able to freely return to their human form and cannot be separated from their Deadman. The power to return to a human form is granted by Giff, so if he dies, a Gifftex will be stuck in their Deadman form. Normally, if a Phase 3 Deadman is defeated, they will be absorbed by Giff. However, certain Vistamps (such as Volcano, Thunder Gale, and Hashibiroko) are capable of undoing the contract with Giff, reverting the Gifftex to a normal human. Even in this case, the power of the Phase 3 Deadman is still absorbed by Giff.

As later revealed by Orteca, only five of the Gifftex are required to be evolved from Deadmen, with Aguilera being the sixth by serving as an untainted vessel. The vessel is the only sacrifice who actually dies as a result of the ritual.

Phase 4[]

Orteca became the first and only Deadman to achieve Phase 4 (フェーズ4, Fēzu 4) by using the Anomalocaris Proto Vistamp on himself and stamping the Giff Stamp on Giff's coffin at the same time, fusing with Giff. Phase 4 seems to function in the same way as Phase 3, except with the added power and regenerative ability of Giff.

Prior to Orteca becoming the Anomalocaris Deadman, Julio transformed into a unique, evolved version of his Deadman form named Wolf Deadman Riot due to the rage he experienced after witnessing the death of his friend Yosuke at Orteca's hands. In this form, he possessed power far surpassing that of a normal Phase 3 Deadman. In George Karizaki's Genome Laboratory, George likens the state to Phase 4 as a result. Unlike Orteca's usage of Phase 4, however, Julio was overcome by his anger and did not have full control over his actions, causing him to rampage.

Notes[]

  • While the standard Deadmen are based on the traditional paper folding art of Origami, the Phase 2 and Gifftex Deadmen instead have more traditional monster forms.
  • All standard Deadmen have one of three lower bodies: one with reptilian scales, one that resembles the legs of an insect, and one with fur.
    • The Phase 2 Deadmen have their own set of lower bodies, though they still follow reptile, insect, mammal scheme.
    • The lower bodies usually do not correspond to the animal motif of the Deadman. For example, the Batta Deadman, based on an insect, has the reptilian lower body while the Lion Deadman, based on a mammal, has the insect lower body.
  • The standard and Phase 2 Deadmen have the same horned, insect-like face somewhere on their body, usually but not always near the head.
  • The Phase 2 and 3 Deadmen all appear to wear some form of white clothing on their body.
  • Several Phase 2 and 3 Deadmen incorporate organs/body parts into their design.
  • Despite Vice being summoned in the form of Deadmen contract sheets the first time he gained a physical state, he is not a Deadman himself.
  • A running theme throughout the series is that the contract holders for Deadmen created from Rider-themed Vistamps are the antithesis of the Riders said Vistampts are based off of.
