A Pitfall is an item from the Animal Crossing franchise, in which it is named Pitfall Seed. Pitfa is a recurring item in the Super Smash Bros. series, in which it debuts in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and later returns in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Description[]

A Pitfall is a white ball with a red exclamation mark on it. Pitfalls are used similarly as in the Animal Crossing games: once a pitfall is thrown on the ground, it becomes buried and entirely invisible, as it does not affect the terrain. If a character walks onto where the pitfall is hidden, a pit opens up beneath the character, who then falls in, immobilized and left open to attack.

It is also possible to place a Pitfall onto a suspended platform. In this case, if a character walks over where the Pitfall is hidden, they fall through the platform, although the main character does not become buried if the main platform is below them. If a Pitfall is thrown at an opponent while they are in the air, the Pitfall causes the opponent to fall right down.

Pitfalls do not affect whoever placed them. Pitfalls also have no effect on Giga Bowser, who is resistant to flinching, and Wario-Man, who is invincible.

In the WarioWare, Inc. stage, being stomped by the foot in the Sole Man microgame has the same effect as walking into a Pitfall.
