The Subcon are mysterious beings and the titular inhabitants of Subcon. They first appear in Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and its overseas Mario conversion Super Mario Bros. 2, playing a key role yet a different one in the backstory for each game.
The Subcon have made almost no reappearances, even in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, which features various enemies from Super Mario Bros. 2. Later appearances of the Subcon references their original appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2.

Physical description[]
Subcons are small fairy-like beings that wear red jumpsuits and have a similar body to a Beezo, including a pair of wings. In their sprites for the original Nintendo Entertainment System version, Subcon are shown to have large heads.
Etymology[]
Like their homeland, the Subcon's name is based on the word "subconscious."
In Super Mario Bros. 2[]
In the backstory for the game, the Subcon contact Mario in his dreams and ask him to help them deal with Wart, who has been taking over their land and imprisoning them. Mario dismisses it and later goes on a picnic with Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool, but finds a door in there leading into Subcon itself.
The Subcon themselves are only seen in the ending. In the screen ranking the best contributor, the Subcon are seen passing a beaten Wart to one another as he moves his way offscreen.
