Emblem[]
The Klingon Empire used a variety emblems that were based on the traditional trefoil logo. One version was yellow and incorporated a partial ring. It was used on KDF vessels. (TOS movie: Star Trek Into Darkness) A more traditional, red emblem and was used on maps and buildings. The Federation organisation Section 31 also used this logo to represent the Klingons. History[]
In the 2150s decade, the D3-class was phased out of frontline service. (ST video game: Fleet Command)
Shortly after stardate 2233.04, a fleet of Klingon battlecruisers captured the crippled Narada, and advanced Romulan mining vessel from the 24th century of another timeline. The Narada was placed in orbit of the prison planetoid Rura Penthe, and its crew placed into slavery in the dilithium mines. Narada shielded itself and the Klingons could not access it. In the 2250s, war between the Empire and the Federation became more likely. (TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek Into Darkness)
After 25 years, Captain Nero and his crew escaped their prison on Rura Penthe and Narada left the Romulans back aboard. (TOS - Star Trek: Nero comic: "Number One")
The Narada destroyed a fleet of 47 Klingon warbirds. Their distress call was detected and recognised by Cadet Nyota Uhura at Earth's Starfleet Academy. Nero went on a warpath in the Federation and destroyed planet Vulcan. (TOS movie & novelization: Star Trek)
The Federation was weakened following the destruction of Vulcan]. Admiral Alexander Marcus of Section 31 began a militarization conspiracy to prepare the Federation for war with the Klingons. (TOS - Star Trek: Khan comic: "Issue 4")
The Augment Khan Noonien Singh escaped Admiral's Marcus's control to the Ketha Province on Kronos. He destroyed a Klingon Defense Force patrol to let himself captured by Captain James T. Kirk. Marcus had Kirk's ship, the USS Enterprise, sabotaged. It stranded in the Klingon Neutral Zone. Marcus planned that the Klingons would learn of Kirk's incursion, find his ship, and start a war with its destruction. Enterprise returned to Earth and Marcus was killed. In 2260, Section 31 planned to eliminate the ongoing threat of Klingon and Romulan war. (TOS - After Darkness comic: "Part 3")
Section 31 manipulated the Romulan Star Empire into by providing them with select pieces of advanced technology. L'Nar and his fleet annihilated the newly-founded colony on Khitomer. The KDF mobilised their new fleet of enhanced vessels. The two fleets fought one another in the Battle of Qo'noS. The Romulans defeated the Klingons. Section 31 then destroyed the remaining Romulan ships. Their ground troops sacked the First City and captured the Klingon Chancellor. Operative Yuki Sulu planned to use the Romulans' red matter to destroy the First City. They were stopped by Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise. The Spectrum War[]
Emperor Chang.
In 2262, an extradimensional energy ring, representing fear on the emotional spectrum, arrived during a skirmish between the IKS Muqtovor and the Enterprise, and slipped onto General Chang's finger, infusing him with the ring's power and his Klingon Regalia uniform turned yellow. The Klingon trefoil insignia now bore the Yellow Lantern emblem. (TOS - The Spectrum War comic: "Issue 1")
Chang, using his ring powers, traveled back to Qo'noS and killed the Klingon leadership in the First City. He declared himself Emperor, and built himself a light construct throne. He was pulled down by Sinestro, leader of the Sinestro Corps and strongest ring bearer of a rear power ring. Chang, while nominal leader of the Klingons, became Sinestro's vassal. Meanwhile, Hegemon Glocon, member of the rage-fuelled Red Lanterns, declared war between the Gornar Hegemony and the Federation. (TOS - The Spectrum War comic: "Issue 3")
In the first battle of the Spectrum War, Glocon and his master Atrocitus attacked Starbase Stavitskaya in the Gamma 400 system. The Red Lantern pair brought no additional Gornar Hegemony support with them. While they attacked the Federation starbase, General Chang and Sinestro arrived with a fleet of B'rel-class Klingon bird-of-prey ships. was soon joined by Hal Jordan's ring-bearers and the Constitution-class USS Enterprise. Similarly, the Battle of Starbase 12 was complicated by the arrival of Decius, Praetor of the Romulan Star Empire, his master Larfleeze, and their fleet of Romulan bird-of-prey ships. Unlike the fear-powered Klingon forces, these were powered by avarice and glowed orange.
With the arrival of Green Lantern Corps reinforcements, the four-way battle's stalemate was turned in favor of the Federation. Jordan's ring-bearers and the Enterprise departed the battle to battle Nekron at a resurrected planet Vulcan, leaving the emperor and other leaders behind at Starbase 12-Savitskaya. (TOS - The Spectrum War comic: "Issue 5")
When Starfleet Commander Spock began manifesting the Life Entity by controlling the emotional spectrum within him, the leaders' rings left their chosen ones and spirited light-years away to Spock. Left unprotected in space, Chang quickly succumbed to the vacuum.
Starfleet found the remains of the dead ring-bearers. With the leadership of three empires suddenly replaced in coup d'états and then killed hours or days later, the Federation had to remain vigilant in the politically destabilised galaxy. (TOS - The Spectrum War comic: "Issue 6")
The Neutral Zone[]
Gorkon was the chancellor of the empire from 2262 onwards.
The Klingons, Federation and Romulans vied with Independents and various other factions for control of the Neutral Zone between the major empires. The Empire shared some of its personnel and technologies with Independents who completed assignments for the Empire.
Rebels, led by the House of Antaak, become a thorn in the side of the Empire and the other factions in the Neutral Zone.
Then, the Augments claimed territory in the Neutral Zone along the Klingon border. The D3-class bird of prey was one of the technologies the Augments hijacked from the Klingons.
In 2263, Chancellor Gorkon's daughter Azetbur was assimilated by the Borg Collective when she investigated the Borg invasion of the Alpha Quadrant. Gorkon resolved to stop at nothing to return Azetbur to her former self. (ST video game: Fleet Command)
Alternate timelines[]
Dominion War frontline.
In one permutation of the Kelvin timeline, the discovery of the Cardassian wormhole in the early 24th century led to an invasion of the Alpha Quadrant by the Gamma Quadrant power Dominion. The Reckoning between the Prophets and Pah-wraith rendered the wormhole impassable. The Federation attempted diplomacy with the Dominion. Recognising the threat posed by the Dominion, the Klingons and Romulans allied. The Dominion destroyed Romulus with red matter, and the Klingon Empire conquered the Federation to absorb its resources. Starfleet was defeated in the Battle of Wolf 359. Earth was colonized by the Empire and became home of the Tera' Colony, with its capital in San Francisco.
The Human Exploration Corps allowed Humans to venture into space under the aegis of the Klingon Empire. The officers trained in this organization helped form the Free Federation Resistance. Under Chancellor Worf, who reigned the Empire from Tera' in the mid-2370s, the Free Federation Resistance had a safe haven on the Human homeworld. (TOS - The Q Gambit comic: "Part 3")
The Changeling leaders of the Dominion infiltrated Tera' and killed Worf, assuming control of local Klingon forces. Tera' Colony fell to the Dominion. (TOS - The Q Gambit comic: "Part 4")
In 2261, Captain Kirk and Commander Spock of the Kelvin timeline learned of this potential future for their own timeline, and sought to avert it. (TOS - The Q Gambit comic: "Part 6")
In another permutation of the Kelvin timeline, James T. Kirk fell into Klingon hands following the destruction of the USS Kelvin in 2233. Raised as the Orphan, he became a ruthless and capable agent of the Empire in spite of his Human heritage. (TOS - IDIC comic: "Part 1")
In a mirror universe of the Kelvin timeline, the Terran Empire ended galactic war with the conquest of Qo'noS on stardate 2258.56. Captain Spock of the ISS Enterprise offered Chancellor Gorkon a position in the Terran bureaucracy. Gorkon accepted death over serfdom. (TOS - Mirrored comics: , "Part 1")

The Klingon Empire was located in the galaxy's Beta Quadrant, spread out between the territories of the Federation, the Romulan Star Empire and the Gornar Hegemony. (TOS - After Darkness comic: "Part 3")
In the 2260s, contested space between the Federation, Romulans and Klingons was called the Neutral Zone. The Augments faction carved out a space for itself along the Klingon border. (ST video game: Fleet Command)
