Blood Magic is a type of magic featured on ABC's Once Upon a Time. It first appears in the twelfth episode of the second season.
One type of Blood Magic is known as Blood Lock.
Uses
Blood magic is linked to a person's bloodline, and because of that, it's almost impossible to break a blood magic. It can be used for various and more advanced spells.
- Protection spells - It can be used to hide and protect a location, an area or an item.
- Blood magic-enhanced cloaking spell:[1] One type of this spell is to cloak and hide a location by linking it with an object unless someone of the same bloodline attains the object and uncovers the protected location. ("The Heart of the Truest Believer")
- Blood magic-enhanced protection spell or blood lock: Another type of this spell is to protect a location or an item from those who are not of the caster's bloodline so that they cannot enter or attain it, but this also means that the people who are of the caster's bloodline can easily approach the said protected element. ("Witch Hunt," "Sisters")
- Blood magic-enhanced containment spell: Last type of this spell is to cast a magical seal with the help of the golden flowers that makes the victim trapped unless they manage to leave someone of same bloodline in their place. ("Eloise Gardener," "One Little Tear")
- Locator spells - It can be used to track someone linked to a person's bloodline, through use of the tracker's blood, with an item that provides insight geographically such as the Magic Globe or an ordinary map. ("In the Name of the Brother," "And Straight On 'Til Morning," "Only You")
- Shapeshifting - It can be used to petrify anyone who is from a certain bloodline who enters a specific area or rune. ("The Eighth Witch")

Ways to Break Blood Magic
- Only people who are of the caster's bloodline can break a blood magic. ("Witch Hunt" et al.)
- The only instance to this is the Coven of the Eight, who used their combined powers to help Drizella to break free of her imprisonment. ("The Eighth Witch")
Trivia
Production Notes
- The part where blood is used to track someone in "Only You" was originally an idea that writer Andrew Chambliss had for an episode of The Vampire Diaries, which he was a writer of. However, it never made it in that form. Since then, he'd wanted to use that element for years, so when Regina needed a way to track Henry, he realized that his old idea would work.[2]
