Book cover of A Murder at Rosamund's Gate

Amy M. Reade Author Of Cape Menace: A Cape May Historical Mystery

From my list on mysteries that make you wish you had a time machine.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve been a lover of historical mysteries ever since I realized itā€™s possible to read mystery fiction and learn history at the same time. Every time I pick up a mystery set in the past, whether itā€™s the ancient past, the more recent past, or somewhere in between, I know Iā€™m going to be intrigued and challenged by a great story and come away with a greater understanding of the people, culture, customs, and events of that time period. Itā€™s a win-win. I write historical mysteries because I want to share with readers what Iā€™ve learned about a particular time or place in a way thatā€™s compelling and engaging.

Amy's book list on mysteries that make you wish you had a time machine

Amy M. Reade Why did Amy love this book?

I picked up this book because I loved the cover (who says we donā€™t choose books by their covers?) and shortly thereafter found myself completely immersed in a 17th-century English Restoration mystery. I would visit that era in my time machine provided itā€™s fully stocked with soap and hand sanitizer (this time period being the one during which the Great Plague took place).

Main character Lucy Campion is a chambermaid in the home of a London magistrate. Her days are filled with the drudgery of servant dutiesā€”that is, until a murder claims the life of a servant in the household and someone Lucy holds dear is accused of the crime. Knowing that person canā€™t possibly be the killer, Lucy sets out to find out whodunit. I donā€™t want to give away any spoilers, so Iā€™ll stop there.

What is this book about?

In Susanna Calkins's atmospheric debut novel, a chambermaid must uncover a murderer in seventeenth-century plague-ridden LondonFor Lucy Campion, a seventeenth-century English chambermaid serving in the household of the local magistrate, life is an endless repetition of polishing pewter, emptying chamber pots, and dealing with other household chores until a fellow servant is ruthlessly killed, and someone she loves is wrongly arrested for the crime. In a time where the accused are presumed guilty until proven innocent, lawyers aren't permitted to defend their clients, and--if the plague doesn't kill them first--public executions draw a large crowd of spectators, Lucy knows sheā€¦

Book cover of Desert Heat

Carl and Jane Bock Author Of Day of the Jaguar: An Arizona Borderlands Mystery

From my list on mysteries about the American Southwest.

Why are we passionate about this?

Deserts are inherently mysterious places. This likely explains why so many good mystery novels have been set in them. We spent better than forty years doing field work in the American Southwest, and we have found mystery novels based in this region among the very best. All good mystery novels must have strong plots and memorable characters, but to us an equally important component is setting. Jane is a botanist with expertise in the use of plant evidence in solving murder cases. Carl is a vertebrate zoologist and conservation biologist. Upon retirement we began writing mysteries. Some are set in the desert grasslands of Arizona, and all are inspired by the southwestern authors we have selected as our favorites.

Carl and Jane Bock Why did Carl love this book?

Joanna Brady finds herself elected sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona, after her husband dies while campaigning for the same job. In this first book of the series, Sheriff Brady must clear her husbandā€™s name of some ugly rumors while simultaneously searching for his killer. Joannaā€™s life is a complicated one, balancing motherhood and ranching on a small scale, while managing a sheriffā€™s department not used to having a woman at the helm. Add to the mix an unsympathetic mother-in-law and (later in the series) a new husband, and you have a protagonist constantly on the edge of chaos. We like this series especially for the authorā€™s skill at portraying the way Brady manages her complicated life, while also evoking the environment and history in and around the former mining town of Bisbee.

Book cover of The Appeal

Jinny Alexander Author Of Claude, Gord, Alice, and Maud

From my list on an unusual take on traditional cozy mystery.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve always adored mysteries. My dad has the entire collection of Agatha Christie books, but even before I read those, I worked through his ancient original hardbacks of Enid Blyton's Famous Five books and the less well-known Malcolm Saville Lone Pine series. I love getting totally engrossed in a series, so I really get to BE the main characterā€“I am one of four siblings, and when I wasnā€™t too busy reading, we were the Famous Five. I was George. I think I still am, to be perfectly honestā€“she was fiery, passionate, loved her dog, and wanted to serve justice and out the bad guys. What a role model!

Jinny's book list on an unusual take on traditional cozy mystery

Jinny Alexander Why did Jinny love this book?

This book was such fun to read! It's really unusual in that it's told entirely by letters, emails, and text messages. It has no chapters and invites lots of flicking pages back and forth to go back and check things, so it's super interactive (I was glad I got the paperback!). I really liked that most of the characters are unlikeable, and none of them seem to like each other very much, either. I LOVE unlikeable characters.

On top of that, much of the information they give in the letters is unreliable at best or completely untrue at worst. This book is a murder mystery, but it takes ages to find out who's dead, and by the time I found out, I'd wanted most of the characters to have been killed offā€“they really are a nasty lot! This book was totally original and very clever, and I adored it fromā€¦

I was amazed to read about the adventures of Mrs ā€˜Chubbieā€™ Miller, whom I had never heard about previously. She was an Australian woman aviator who competed in the US National Womenā€™s Air Race (the so-called ā€˜Powder Puff Derbyā€™) and other Womenā€™s Air Derbys with Amelia Earhart and others. Book cover of The Yard

Rachel Brimble Author Of A Widow's Vow

From my list on venture into the darker side of Victorian life.

Why am I passionate about this?

I am by no means an expert on the Victorian era, but I am most certainly passionate ā€“ I have written seven novels set in this period and have researched different aspects of the social, domestic, and gender-related issues for each of those books. The Victorian era is such a fascinating time ā€“ from the huge differences in money and class, to the beginnings of women starting to initiate (or maybe even demand) change with the first murmurings of womenā€™s suffrage and, of course, the Married Womenā€™s Property Act 1882. Rich in storytelling possibility and the opportunity to bring societal, gender, and sexual issues to the fore, I find writing in the Victorian period immensely exciting.

Rachel's book list on venture into the darker side of Victorian life

Rachel Brimble Why did Rachel love this book?

I stumbled across this book while browsing through a charity shop ā€“ a murder/mystery set in Whitechapel when Jack the Ripper is still roaming free. I am by no means a follower of Ripper stories, legend or myth, despite recommending this book, but there is something about Victorian London in the 1880s that fascinates me.

The Yard is the first in a series that I have devoured over the last few years. I love Alex Grecianā€™s easy writing style and the main character, Detective Inspector Walter Day is one I wish I had created myself. He has a brilliant mind, a quick and quiet humour, and a soul that is truly good. Of course, he does have his faults, but they are all forgivableā€¦at least for me!

Nicole Bokat Author Of Will End in Fire

From my list on domestic suspense that upends the meaning of family.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™m a novelist with a PhD in Literature from NYU. My background is Modern British, and Iā€™ve always been drawn to literary stylists. But, over the years, Iā€™ve developed a passion for reading and writing novels that deal with themes of betrayal either within families or between close friends. Iā€™m drawn to domestic suspense in which the charactersā€™ psychological growth isnā€™t secondary to the plot.

Flynn Berryā€™s first thriller opens with a stunningly rendered scene in which the protagonist, Nora, discovers the body of her sister, Rachel, who has been murdered.

Throughout the novel, Berry captures Noraā€™s shock, grief, and sense of missionā€”to find out who killed her beloved sisterā€”in precise but poetic language. I witnessed the horror visually and felt Noraā€™s emotions without any extra flourishes or sentimental language.

Michelle Hillen Klump Author Of Murder Served Neat

From my list on putting you in the mood for a good cocktail.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™m a former reporter turned mystery novelist with a fondness for classic cocktails. Iā€™ve always been fascinated by the art of cocktail making, and how a great mixologist knows exactly what ingredients pair well with others to create new and surprising flavors. As a reader, I like a book that engages all of my senses. In the same way that a great description can draw a reader into a scene, the mention of a certain cocktail can evoke specific moods or memories. In each of these books, cocktails contribute to the atmosphere, offering readers something to savor, like a perfectly made Sazerac.

From Beer To Eternity, the first in Sherry Harrisā€™ Chloe Jackson Sea Glass Saloon Mysteries, is the first book in a delightful cozy series.

In the book, the reader learns all about the colorful inhabitants of Emerald Cove, Florida, while Chloe Jackson, who has taken up bartending at the Sea Glass Saloon as a favor to a dead friend, learns the fine art of cocktail making while investigating a murder.

The mystery is engaging, the setting is picturesque, the characters are charming, and the book is the perfect read for a relaxing few hours on the beach, preferably with a piƱa colada made with fresh ingredients and blended to perfection.

Natasha Bell Author Of His Perfect Wife

From my list on complicated female protagonists.

Why am I passionate about this?

Iā€™ve always been drawn to complex female characters in both reading and writing. Even in the 21st century, there are so many expectations placed on girls and women to conform to societyā€™s narrow concepts of femininity. As a queer woman who grew up under the UKā€™s Section 28, Iā€™ve always struggled to fit myself into these pre-assigned boxes, which is why Iā€™m fascinated by those who step so firmly out of them. I teach as well as write and one of the most satisfying things about both is the time I get to spend examining character. I hope youā€™re as captivated by these difficult women as I am!
