The floating turret[1] is an obstacle that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a floating object that shoots out damage-inducing energy balls.

Description[]

The floating turret is a floating ball-like object that has pentagonal and triangular faces on it. The triangular faces are colored gray, while the pentagonal faces are indented and colored green. In Sonic Forces, the front-facing side has a larger pentagonal pattern outlining it.

In gameplay, floating turrets shoot green-colored plasma balls in each of the eight cardinal directions, starting with north, then going either clockwise or counter-clockwise until it shoots northwest or northeast respectively. If a playable character gets hit by these shots, they will take damage. The cannon will then lay idle for a moment before shooting more plasma balls.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Colors[]

In the Wii version of Sonic Colors, and the remaster Sonic Colors: Ultimate, floating turrets make their only appearance in Starlight Carnival Act 4, where they are the main gimmick of the Act. Here, the player has to traverse through the Act while avoiding the plasma balls that they shoot. For some of them, the playable character can hide behind the platforms to avoid getting hit, though for others, the player will have to maneuver their way between the plasma balls.

While most of the floating turrets fire their plasma balls in a clockwise pattern, one in particular shoots a lot more than the others, notably in three different directions at the same time.

Sonic Forces[]

In Sonic Forces, the floating turrets are the main gimmicks of the fourth secret stage, Plasma Cannon 1, where the player controls the Avatar, and the seventh extra stage, Plasma Cannon 2, where the player controls Sonic/Shadow. They behave the same as in Sonic Colors, except the green parts of the cannon now dim when the floating turret is not shooting. It also does not rotate around its z-axis like in Sonic Colors.
