The Labyrinth[1] is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series and its spin-offs produced by Paramount Pictures. It was a hidden temple in the Pacific Ocean, built by the owl warriors to house the Master Emerald. However, it was destroyed when Dr. Robotnik stole the Master Emerald.
Description[]
The entire Labyrinth is designed like a multi-story temple. It itself is hidden underneath the sea near a small island in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles away from Hawaii. On the aforementioned island is a pedestal hidden on its beach where the compass from Siberia that leads to the Master Emerald can be inserted into. Soon after the compass is inserted, it will trigger a mystical mechanism that makes the sea in front of it split apart and reveal the Labyrinth's exterior. Also, when the Labyrinth is unveiled, it will emanate a green pillar of energy from the top of its structure into the sky, creating dark storm clouds with green energy discharges.
The inside of the Labyrinth resembles a series of stone corridors, all filled with traps, such as arrow shooters, rolling boulders with spikes, retractable or protruding spikes, flamethrowers, blow dart traps, and swinging scythes. As calculated by Dr. Robotnik, there is a trap every seventh second inside the Labyrinth, although it has been shown that some may appear earlier. Many portions of the Labyrinth also possess flowing streams of water, with some of them forming water slides. There are also blue crystals and undersea plant formations around the stone corridors. In addition, the temple walls and its traps are all decorated with images of owls.
Despite its labyrinthine layout, all of the paths in the Labyrinth converge into a central chamber which features a raised altar meant to hold the Master Emerald. Should the Emerald be removed however, the Labyrinth will begin to crumble and collapse, while the sea fills up the rift it is located in.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2[]
Knuckles and Robotnik would eventually acquire the compass on their hunt for the Master Emerald. With it as their guide, they found the island holding its pedestal, which they used to reveal the Labyrinth in the ocean upon inserting the compass into it. The duo would subsequently venture inside the Labyrinth, avoiding traps and obstacles through usage of Badniks. After losing their last Badnik to a trap and barely avoiding more though, Robotnik decided to work smarter and thus used his Robotnik Control Glove to deploy a miniature reconnaissance Badnik in his sleeve to scan the Labyrinth for him and Knuckles, which Robotnik used to map out the entire temple. Meanwhile, Sonic would arrive at the Labyrinth, where he approached the central chamber from a different direction, using his speed to avoid all manners of traps.

With the aid of Robotnik's map, he and Knuckles reached the Master Emerald's chamber. As they approached the Master Emerald's altar, Robotnik prepared to backstab Knuckles with his taser, only for Sonic to come crashing through the ceiling and land in front of them. Sonic and Knuckles proceeded to fight each other. However, their fight got interrupted when Robotnik cunningly stole the Master Emerald from behind the backs of both of them. This caused the entire Labyrinth to begin flooding and crumbling, trapping Knuckles under a stone pillar in the process. Despite his previous conflicts with Knuckles, Sonic helped free him, only for Knuckles to return to the surface, leaving Sonic at risk of drowning. However, Knuckles soon returned and brought Sonic back up to the nearby island with him.

- The Labyrinth is based on Labyrinth Zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
- In the first trailer the exterior was based on the temple in the Mystic Ruins. It is currently unknown why this was changed.
- However, in the deep backround of Knuckles' flashback sequence, a temple can be briefly seen of what appears to be the forementioned latter.
- Labyrinth is the only game inspired zone located on Earth, while the other ones shown in Sonic the Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill are all located on alien planets.
- The Labyrinth in the end credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is represented by the sprite art of the Labyrinth zone from the original Sonic the Hedgehog.
