Salmonids (シャケ Shake?, lit. Salmon) are fish creatures who are the main antagonists and enemies of the Salmon Run/Salmon Run Next Wave mode in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3. The ink color that associates with Salmonids is dark green. Out of the entire species, one Smallfry (nicknamed "Little Buddy") stands out the most as being the friend/ally to the new Agent 3 during Return of the Mammalians of Splatoon 3, being a key weapon against the Fuzzy Ooze as he could eat it to clear the way.
Appearance[]
Like Octarians, an appearance of a Salmonid varies between what type, including a Boss Salmonid or King Salmonid. Basically, they resemble real-life salmon, but have big, green, googly eyes, big mouths with crooked teeth and have huge fins and an orange mohawk.
There are several types of Salmonid species, and what determines their appearance is what environment that they are raised in, with those raised in a harsher environment becoming Boss or King Salmonids.
History[]
Salmonids were recently sighted along the irradiated waters outside Inkopolis, having participated on their Salmon Runs in every 70 years. They can swim freely in the water (unlike Inklings and Octolings) and can walk on land. They are also known for collecting resources for their society.
Salmonids also tend to be aggressive and warlike. They also use frying pans as their weapons, likely passed down from humans.
In a Big Run, Salmonids invades the residences of Inklings and Octolings in Splatsville.

Boss Salmonids are elite Salmonids that require skill and strategy to defeat them. When defeated, they drop Golden Eggs, which you need to collect to add enough to the basket and meet your quota in each wave.

King Salmonids[]
King Salmonids are very powerful, gigantic Salmonids introduced in Salmon Run Next Wave in Splatoon 3 that sometime appear before the player has completed their 3 wave round and will have to deal with them in battles on a time limit to push them back. In these fights, the player is given an egg canon on the back of their tank used to fire Golden Eggs to deal a lot of damage to the Salmonids.

- The Salmonids are based on the salmon fish, which are native to the North Atlantic and the shores of the Northern Pacific Ocean. A species of salmon, known as the huchen (HOO-ken, HOO-hen), exists in the Danube river basin of Eastern Europe.
- There is a Splatoon 2 art posted on twitter themed on the new year for 2019. It says, "Have a great 2020".
- But in the reflection it shows in the water says "S.O.S.", and each letter has a word in it showing the acronym for S.O.S.: "Save our Salmonoids".
- The Salmonids which use a frying pan have two variations of the weapon.
- Most individual Salmonids do not have traditional names, instead having lengthy titles.
