Chica the Chicken is a major antagonist of the 2023 supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy's, the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name.
She is an animatronic food-themed yellow chicken who is the backup singer of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. One of the pizzeria's four main attractions, it is revealed that she and her friends come to life by the spirits of ghost children at nighttime and kill anybody that comes after hours, including night guards that may be working.
She was portrayed by Jessica Weiss as an animatronic. As a ghost child, she was portrayed by Jophielle Love.
Appearance[]
Just like her video game incarnation, Chica is a tall, anthropomorphic, quite stocky animatronic food-themed yellow chicken who wears a bib that says "LET'S EAT!", aside from minor differences. She has light yellow pads on her hands and has a orange color on her beak, lower legs and her feet along with two white claws. While her eyes remain similar to her video game counterpart from the first game, they are now a darker shade of magenta with a slight red tint. Her beak is now made of fiberglass as opposed to molded plastic. Her lower legs and feet are made with a different type of fabric instead of plastic. When acting in a hostile manner, her eyes glow orange while under the influence of William Afton. However, her eyes glow red when she and the other animatronics are disposing of William.
As a ghost child, she has white skin, with long straight blonde hair tied into pigtails and blue eyes. She also wears a white shirt with long yellow sleeves, along with orange pants and dark gray shoes.
Personality[]
Like her video game counterpart, Chica is an animatronic who kills any security guard working the night shift. She is said to be the most intelligent and cunning of the group as she is quite resourceful in her use of her cupcake companion and minion Mr. Cupcake, who she uses as a distraction and a weapon, especially to get to Jeff via the narrow air vents. She is also quite manipulative as she was able to trick Abby and lure the girl into the Parts and Service room so she plans to stuff her into an Ella springlock suit. Unlike her bandmates, who get at least one kill, Chica is the only animatronic who is never shown murdering a single person as she instead lets Mr. Cupcake do the killing for her while she watches since he acts as her attacker.
However, Chica, like her bandmates, isn't a bad person and instead a very tragic individual. Like her friends, she was once an innocent child who had her life cut short by William Afton who abducted her, killed her and stuffed her corpse inside the Chica animatronic suit alongside her friends. It's also mentioned by Vanessa that she and her bandmates don't want to hurt anyone, as they are influenced by William into committing all of their murders for him.
Despite this, Chica, like her bandmates, is shown to be kind and playful towards children as, like the other animatronics, she still has the mind of a child, as demonstrated through her relationship with Abby. Despite being manipulated by Afton into attempting to stuff her into an animatronic suit and kill her brother, Mike, she does genuinely care about the girl, giving her a wink in a friendly manner while participating in building a fort with her and the others and even dancing with Abby along with Foxy while Freddy and Bonnie are performing "Wild One" by Iggy Pop. Chica cares for Mr. Cupcake, whom she is able to command, ordering him to do whatever she desires and having him immediately obey. This is demonstrated when she ordered Mr. Cupcake to attack Carl in the kitchen and even sends him through the vents towards the office in an attempt to attack Jeff, only to fail. She later orders Mr. Cupcake to attack and kill Afton after Abby frees her and the other animatronics from his control.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Stealth Mastery: Chica is incredibly stealthy, shown when she silently appeared behind Carl in the kitchen.
- Command over Mr. Cupcake: Chica is able to control her companion and henchman Mr. Cupcake, ordering him to do whatever she desires, and having him immediately obey. This is shown when she appears behind Carl in the kitchen, before Mr. Cupcake leaps out of Chica's hand and mauls his face off.
- Enhanced Durability: Chica is incredibly durable, shown to have almost no weaknesses. When she's electrocuted by Mike, she briefly shuts down, before she reactivates herself, seeming absolutely fine.

Background[]
The Chica animatronic was created under William Afton, an associate of Fazbear Entertainment, being the backup singer of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in order to entertain kids. However, Afton abducted a girl with blonde hair tied into pigtails, murdering her, along with other four children. The child's soul returns to the living world and possesses Chica, residing in her.
After Freddy Fazbear's pizza place was closed down, William, under the alias of Steve Raglan, for who knows how long, went under the job as a career counselor, tricked people into getting a job at the abandoned pizza place, just so they could get killed by Chica and the others. And by proxy, in his Spring Bonnie disguise, tricked his victims into killing the night guards or anyone who came into the building, such as himself, and his daughter Vanessa Shelly.
Five Nights at Freddy's[]
During Mike's first shift at Freddy's, as Mike explored the place, Chica was discovered by him whilst checking the animatronics behind the curtain on the show stage. After several minutes later when Mike fell asleep, Chica's spirit appeared in his dream along with the other ghost children, When she was asked by Mike to as what happened to his younger brother, she and along with the other ghost children ran away from Mike. Mike encountered Chica's spirit again in his second shift during his second dream sequence, when Mike asked furiously where Garrett was, she and the other ghost children ran away from Mike again. Later, Vanessa showed Mike Chica and the other animatronics because she wanted him to properly meet them.
After Mike's second shift, Chica and the other animatronics were activated after a group of criminals broke in and began hunting them down. Chica precisely was after Carl, who was vandalizing the kitchen. When Carl became distracted by a loud noise that was coming from the refrigerator, Chica snuck past right outside the kitchen without Carl's knowledge. When Carl discovered what was in the refrigerator, it was Mr. Cupcake. Chica distracted him so Mr. Cupcake could disappear and retreat back to her without him noticing. After realizing Mr. Cupcake was nowhere to be found, Carl turned around only to find Chica in front of him, who then commands Mr. Cupcake to attack Carl, who lunges at him and viciously tears apart his face. Chica then encountered Hank when he went to investigate the kitchen, Chica scared him which caused him to run away into the supply closet; unknowingly to his death, Bonnie was inside. Later on, when Jeff came into the office and checked on the security cameras, Bonnie and Chica were in one of the hallways. Chica then slowly bent down to let Mr. Cupcake crawl into the vents, but failed to attack Jeff, who successfully fended him off.
During Mike's third shift, Chica and the fellow animatronics attempted to kidnap Abby, but were interrupted by Mike, who was trying to rescue her. She went back to the show stage after Mike and Abby left the place. During Mike's fourth shift, Chica and the fellow animatronics build a makeshift fort along with Mike, Vanessa and Abby. In the final dream sequence, when Mike ultimately refused to surrender Abby Schmidt to the ghost children, Chica's spirit and the others began to retaliate and attack Mike, nearly killing him.
During Mike's fifth and final shift, Chica lured Abby Schmidt into the backroom, and tried to kill her by stuffing her into Ella, but Mike rescued Abby after tasing Chica in her left eye, which caused her to deactivate. After William Afton tells the animatronics to wake up because they have someone to play with, Chica reactivated and joined the other animatronics under William's control and tried to take Abby, but after Abby drew a picture for the animatronics - of William murdering her and her friends - to show what he truly was, the memories of their deaths returned to the animatronics. Chica and the others ultimately turned against Afton after they discovered the truth about him.
After William told them they are wretched rotten little beasts, Chica orders Mr. Cupcake to attack Afton, biting off part of his suit which activated the springlocks within. During the springlock failure, Chica and the other animatronics watched him as he suffered and writhed in pain, and with Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place internally collapsing before them, Chica and the other two animatronics followed Foxy into the engineering room.
It is uncertain at this time as to what might have happened to Chica along with the rest of the animatronics after Freddy Fazbear Pizza's Place internally collapsed.
Trivia[]
- Unlike her bandmates, Chica never kills a single person as she instead allows Mr. Cupcake to do the murdering for her while her bandmates get at least one kill. However, she came the closest to killing Abby when she tried to put her in the Ella springlock suit.
- In the original trailer as well as a few others follow, Chica and the other animatronics' eyes would become red. This was met with mixed reaction from the community, some finding it funny and others hating it. Once the movie released, however, the red eyes had been completely scrubbed, with several scenes featuring the eyes not being in the theatrical release.
- It is unknown if Chica's spirit is linked to both Mr. Cupcake and her at the same time, indicating that she had split her spirit into two to temporarily control Mr. Cupcake to attack people.
- In the video games, the spirit of the child possessing Chica is identified as the first of William Afton's victims. In the film, she is shown in the opening credits to have been the third.
- Like the video games, Chica is the only female animatronic within the group whose majority consists of males.
