Vilgax is the main antagonist of Cartoon Network's Ben 10 franchise.

He is a ruthless, sadistic, power-hungry and tyrannical galactic overlord who has conquered and destroyed many planets while intending to use the Omnitrix to conquer the universe with an iron fist. He is also a past enemy of Max Tennyson and the arch-nemesis of Ben Tennyson, whom he seeks to ruthlessly annihilate at all costs, becoming one of the most powerful and dangerous villains Ben has fought in the franchise.

Portrayals

In the original series and Ben 10: Omniverse, he was voiced by Steve Blum, who also played Zs'Skayr in the same franchise, Red Skull in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Amon in The Legend of Korra, Jindiao in Kung Fu Panda: Paws of Destiny, Makucha in The Lion Guard, Darkseid, Lex Luthor and Ocean Master in the DC Animated Movie Universe, Starscream in Transformers: Prime, Ares in God of War, Killer Croc in the Batman: Arkham series, Lucifer in the Dante's Inferno animated film, Baraka in the Mortal Kombat series, Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man tie-in video game, Captain Cold and Heat Wave in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Zartan in G.I. Joe: Resolute, Green Goblin and the Chameleon in The Spectacular Spider-Man, Bullseye in the video game adaptation of The Punisher, Venom in Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Orochimaru and Zabuza Momochi in Naruto and Kyogai in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

In Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, he was voiced by James Remar, who also played Black Mask in The Batman, Silver Monkey in Beware the Batman, Shadow-Thief in Justice League Unlimited, Two-Face in Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ajax in The Warriors, Butch Pooch and Ace Speck in Django Unchained, Albert Ganz in 48 Hrs, Beauty Smith in White Fang and Quill in The Phantom.

Appearance

Vilgax is a large, slender, muscular humanoid extraterrestrial creature with a face resembling that of an octopus. He has tentacles dangling in the front of his face, like a beard. His skin is pale-green with yellowish spots on his face and tentacles. He lacks nose and outer ears. He has red eyes.

In the prologue of original series, he wore a black and red-brownish armored suit and gloves. His armor is spiked at the shoulder and arm pads. He has green sacs on the sides of his head. His mouth was attached to the sacs by a respirator.

As of Secrets, he has become much more powerful as he now has a more muscular physique. He now has a mask covering his mouth, attached to the armor, new shoulder and leg pads. He also had metallic gloves with small fingers as well as reddish brown cylinders-like objects piercing his arms, giving him much stronger and more muscular limbs. His tentacles are now much longer. He has six tentacles in front and two behind.

In Ben 10: Alien Force/Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, he no longer has red-brownish armor, mask, and green cheek sacs. He wears a red and blue armor. He has a belt that is attached to the Raygun pocket. He wears dark blue stockings with metallic squares. He has a Ruby Ray of Rouleau on his right hand, and a Shield of Seagle on his left arm. He now has just five tentacles, all on the front of his face, and his eyes were larger. He also has a metallic part replacing the green sac on his head.

In his true form, he more closely resembles an octopus, having the shape of one with many tentacles. He has three spikes on his head. He has gills on his cheeks.

In Omniverse, he looks almost identical to his original design. He no longer has the Ruby Ray of Rouleau and Shield of Seagle. He regained his original green cheek sacs. He has dirty teeth. Two of his facial tentacles now end with a spiky-looking shape. His armor is similar to his original series, with the exception being the cylinders on his arm and armor now being gold in color. He wears black clothes underneath his armor and black stockings. His gloves are fingerless. He wears a headpiece similar to his shoulder pads.

In Ben 10000 timeline after being revived and empowered by the future Aloysius Animo, Vilgax is even larger than the original timeline Vilgax. He wears a red and black armor. He has a very large muscular left arm with two-spiked elbows. He has three cannons on his right sleeve (that shoots bio-bombs) and a hidden tentacle underneath his right arm.

Personality

An extremely cruel, ruthless, brutal, arrogant, cold-hearted, malicious, authoritative, vile, heartless, sadistic and power-hungry alien warlord, Vilgax is always intent on his goal of ruling the universe, namely through obtaining the Omnitrix, which he views as the ultimate weapon. Vilgax is also very deceiving and manipulative, so as to accomplish his goals and has little to no sense of mercy. Because of his greater skill set, Vilgax became prideful of his capabilities and would occasionally point out to his enemies that underestimating him is a grave mistake. Because of his powers, his ruthlessness and his hunger for absolute conquest, Vilgax became arguably the most feared being in the entire universe. As a result, almost no sentient beings are willing to work for him sans Psyphon and certain mercenaries like Sixsix, the latter for the right price, so his forces consist almost entirely of robots programmed to obey him or people who were forced into serving him. He wants to make Ben suffer for sending him to the Null Void.

Initially, Max Tennyson was a foil to Vilgax, who was at first the only person who had ever defeated him. However, after he began his quest for the Omnitrix, Max's grandson Ben became his ultimate foil, making the two sworn archenemies for years to come.

Also, while Ben is rather comedic and is usually looking out for others, Vilgax is always portrayed as a serious character and only looks out for himself, with the exception of his own race. Even then, judging by his actions later during the franchise, he cares more about the glory than truly being dedicated. If this is true, then his attempts to protect his race are purely for personal gain. This proves to be true in Omniverse, where he briefly destroys most of the multiverse without even sparing his planet.

Throughout his entire pursuit for absolute power, Vilgax was not willing to let anyone or anything stand in his way, and would get revenge on anyone who defeated him before. Because of this, he has developed a rather pathological hatred towards Ben Tennyson, and his quest for the Omnitrix slowly became his secondary goal as his desire for Ben's defeat and death became even greater. His hatred for Ben continually increased for the worse after he sent him to the Null Void (a dimension that he strongly despised), to the extent he didn't care what would happen to the universe when the Omnitrix was in Self-Destruct Mode as long as he got revenge on Ben.

Also, because of his constant defeats by Ben's hand, Vilgax's reputation as the most dangerous being became fractured as Ben was now seen as the only one who could stop him, thus cementing Vilgax's obsession to kill him and restore that legacy.

Powers and Abilities

Powers

• Chimera Sui Generis physiology: Vilgax originates from highly advanced, amphibious species of humanoid cephalopods known as Chimera Sui Generis, colloquially called "Vilgaxians". Due to excessive mutations and cybernetic enhancements done to repair his body after a battle in pilot episode, Vilgax's physical attributes vastly surpass his species' natural abilities. He is widely feared as one of the most powerful beings in the universe.
  • Superhuman strength: Vilgax possesses an immense level of superhuman strength, being able to overpower and beat most of aliens in Ben Tennyson's arsenal to submission within only a few blows. However, its amount has been changing over the course of the series; his original form, seen in the original series' first episode and flashbacks, was able to easily overpower Phil Billings, a trained, peak condition human being. Upon finishing his regeneration process in the finale of season one, Vilgax was able to pin Max Tennyson to the ground with a foot, hold Stinkfly in one hand, send Heatblast flying through several buildings with a push, shatter Diamondhead, and when his arm rods retracted inside his limbs, he could swing around Kevin Levin in his amalgam form and destroy Theodore Roosevelt's portion of Mount Rushmore with just one punch.
  • Superhuman durability: Vilgax is nearly invulnerable and indestructible from physical standpoint, surviving massive nuclear explosions on at least two instances (including a nuclear bomb he was strapped to) and walking off being launched into outer space by Way Big on another two instances. His sheer durability caused XLR8 to nearly pass out when he rammed to him at full speed, leaving Vilgax standing unfazed. Despite losing most of his durability by the Omniverse, his regular form was able to endure a brutal assault from Diamondhead, Electro-Yeti, Cannonbolt and Atomic-X, the latter of which used several black holes against Vilgax, followed by a fall from stratosphere with enough speed to create a sonic boom and a crater.
    • Temperature resistance: He is impervious to extremely hot temperatures, withstanding flames of both Swampfire and Heatblast at their top capacity, the latter of which melted concrete and asphalt beneath him. Similarly, he is unaffected by low temperatures, almost instantly breaking out of Big Chill's ice, who can reduce the temperature of his surroundings to an absolute zero.
  • Superhuman endurance: In an unlikely event of being seriously harmed, Vilgax can endure the extreme amount of physical damage that would kill most other creatures. In the first episode of the series, he lost his left arm, both legs and most of his organs, forcing him to enter suspended animation for a few weeks. Similarly, his future version had third-degree burns and appeared to have lost most of his muscle mass, surviving more than a decade in a cryostasis.
  • Superhuman leaping: Vilgax is capable of jumping at massive distances and heights for a faster locomotion. In original series, Vilgax was able to close the distance between Heatblast and him after hurling the Pyronite through series of buildings and later keep up with Stinkfly by quickly jumping through the roofs of skyscrapers. After being tackled off Chimerian Hammer by Upgrade and landing on the ground, Vilgax instantaneously reached the top of Mount Rushmore in a single leap. While his Alien Force iteration prefers to use flying ability for travel, he demonstrated an extraordinary jumping by lunging at Zs'Skayr multiple times throughout their fight. Later, during his fight with Sir George and Eatle, he leaped behind an Oryctini, knowing that it was his weak spot.
  • Superhuman reflexes: While he prefers to tank attacks, Vilgax is nevertheless able to react much faster than human being in combat, as he was able to catch XLR8 right before the latter landed his blow. He can also react to lasers, instantly putting his force-field after a fleet of spaceships have opened fire on him; using his momentum, this allowed Vilgax to cut a spaceship clean in half.
  • Squid metamorphosis: Vilgax possesses a natural ability to become a massive, squid-like creature. In this form, he can breathe underwater, use ginormous tentacles as weapons, and his overall size increases exponentially. However, he is far more vulnerable in that state, as he cannot move or breathe on land effectively, and he cannot take back humanoid shape if he is weakened.
  • Vacuum adaptation: Vilgax can survive in a vacuum of space for long periods of time, as shown when he was thrown into space by Way Big in Ben 10: Secret of the Omnitrix. In Alien Force, Vilgax regularly travels in space without the need of additional equipment.
  • Energy projection: In And Then There Were None, Vilgax can project red electric energy beams out of his hands. This ability was never elaborated upon and it is unknown whether it is a part of his new cybernetics or mutation.
• Conqueror of 10 Worlds: Five years after the original series, Vilgax used Vox Peniculus to absorb all powers and life-force of superheroes of 10 planets he had conquered. Following the end of Ultimate Alien, he appeared to have lost all of them.
  • Transitional phasing blasts: Vilgax's new main attack became a pair of red heat beams projected out of his eyes, which could change their direction after being fired and chase down Kinecelerans. They were able to weaken Humungousaur at full size and decimate gigantic boulder several times larger than him, incinerate Ectonurites, as well as slice through Swampfire's vine tentacles by bouncing off the floor.
  • Strength augmentation: Vilgax's strength increased to the point where he could knock out Ultimos and Humungousaur when the latter grew up to 60 feet in height, both instances creating massive shock wave felt across the entire city. He would overpower Tetramands such as Manny or Tini as if they were children, throwing the latter to the wall with enough force to bury her under a rubble and presumably killing her. His bare fists could shatter through Petrosapien-made crystalline constructs far larger than him. However, even when grown to the same size as him, Vilgax's proportional strength was still numerous times inferior to that of Way Big, who not only completely overpowered him, but also threw into space without any effort.
  • Hurricane breath: Vilgax was able to project an extremely powerful cyclone winds out of his mouth, which could put out Pyronites and change their direction.
  • Flight: Despite his mass, Vilgax had ability of unsupported flight in atmosphere or a vacuum of space. He was shown to keep up with supersonic Aerophibians such as Jetray in Earth's atmosphere and fly dozens to hundreds of light years from Earth to either Petropia or Vilgaxia within a matter of minutes, heavily implying ability to travel much faster than light.
  • Amplified hearing: Vilgax could hear faint noises coming from miles away, as demonstrated when he heard Ben sneeze when the latter was underground in the sewers while Vilgax was on the surface.
• Lucubra fusion: After being forcibly pulled into Dagon's demonic realm, Vilgax willingly swore his loyalty to the eldritch demon and as such, was allowed to retain his consciousness unlike Esoterica subjects. In return for his services, Vilgax was merged with Lucubra, gaining enormous power boost and new abilities that would allow him to hold his own against Sir George empowered with a power of Ascalon, as well as several of Ben's aliens. This new form retained his trademark strength, being able to lift a building with his bare hands, as well as durability to withstand being thrown through a series of skyscrapers by Eatle's charge and immunity to fire.
  • Energy manipulation: "Ultimate Vilgax" would gain ability to project and discharge purple-colored energy, which he could emit either from his hands or eyes. They could burn through Forever Knights' updated armor and kill them in one shot, as well as launch shock waves that would kill a squadron of soldiers that protected Sir George. The more energy he managed to absorb from Dagon, the stronger his attacks would become, with him being able to create a gigantic sphere of energy much larger than him and shoot it as multiple energy beams.
  • Electricity manipulation: Ultimate Vilgax could generate, interact with and manipulate electricity, as shown when he pushed through a force-field created by Sir George to contain him, grabbing energy projected from Ascalon with his bare hands and throwing the knight away.
  • Light manipulation: Ultimate Vilgax could emit light from his body, blinding his opponents and illuminating his surroundings.
• Malware armor: After forming an alliance with Albedo for the third time, Vilgax managed to stole Malware's petrified corpse from the museum on Galvan Prime, having his ally modify it to become a functional powered armor that would grant its wearer all of mutant Galvanic Mechamorphs' powers. Vilgax would use this device for his last present-day onscreen battle with Ben, crushing the cube and having Malware Armor coat his form in black-and-red amorphous body of Malware. His strength increased to the point where he could send Diamondhead to Galvan-B with one punch and then send Atomix crashing into Chimerian Hammer, as well as completely ignore nuclear attacks from aforementioned alien despite his ability to knock out ultimate forms without effort.
  • Technology manipulation: Malgax could absorb, petrify and utilize any technology he came in contact with, as well as use all devices that the rogue Mechamorph absorbed throughout his life, such as project energy lasers from Proto-Tool, manifest wings of Galvan Jetpack to fly from planet to planet using jet propulsion from his legs, and manifest dual Tachyon Cannons that could annihilate his targets on sub-cellular level within one hundred miles of its blast radius.

• Vilgax's defeat at the hands of Way Big in Alien Force is similar to his defeat in Secret of the Omnitrix, which has been confirmed to be an intentional touch.
• Vilgax's physical appearance of being a humanoid being with tentacles hanging from his face is very similar to Cthulhu. Fittingly, Vilgax eventually ended up absorbing the powers of Dagon, who is the Ben 10 version of Cthulhu.
• In the original Ben 10 series, Vilgax's homeworld was given as the Null Void Frontier or Shadowy Realm before it was confirmed as Vilgaxia (formerly known as Murray) in Alien Force.
• The producers of the show refer to Vilgax as "Darth Vader without a sense of humor".
• According to the Ben 10 pop-up marathon, Vilgax will not meet his final demise until 200 years after the original Ben 10 series.
• Derrick J. Wyatt intended for Vilgax to look like his original self, but Matt Youngberg thought Vilgax's Alien Force/Ultimate Alien appearance had more personality.
  • It was confirmed all the spoils Vilgax collected from conquering 10 worlds were taken away from him after Dagon' defeat. Meaning he no longer the equipment and powers, which were likely given back to their owners.
• Vilgax was severely injured by Ben sometime after Omniverse; having pushed him far enough to make Ben dismember the villain and throw his remains into cold storage, thus leading to the events of Ben 10,000.
  • Considering the pummeling 40 year old Ben gave Kevin 11,000 for simply knocking out Kenny, Vilgax was lucky Ben didn't make him suffer more.
• Vilgax acts as a dark reflection of Ben Tennyson, as they both are fascinated by the Omnitrix due to its immense power and potential. However, they follow different paths: Ben, despite his immaturity and lack of full understanding of the Omnitrix's power and purpose in the original series, decides to use it to help people and grows to become a true hero, while Vilgax only wants to exploit the Omnitrix's power to satisfy his selfish desires for power and domination. If Ben had let his selfishness and immaturity consume him completely, he could have become like Vilgax.
