Strength and virtue must be opposed--must be challenged and tested--or they will not grow. Rain must fall or there are no rainbows. Night must come, or we do not come to love the light of day. That is the way of things. And the hero who triumphs over the greatest adversity--it is he that is mightiest of all...

Youthful innocence must ever be nurtured! Children deserve only love and devotion -- and should be protected at any cost! In truth, they are our future. Our living legacy to the parade of endless tomorrows! So speaks Odin!

Aye. I am an old man–foolish and fond, and quick with my temper. There are times I show little wisdom.

And yet... Here there is wisdom. The strange wisdom of the World-Tree I gave this eye to.

The tree that is everything. That has its roots and branches in all that is. There are ten realms in this reality–Ten spheres, ten universes, and the tree winds through them all. Through every star and planet. Every hero and villain. Every life

Every story.

I am Odin Borson, who built the world from corpse-meat. I am Odin One-Eye, and sometimes my one eye is open. But above all, I am Odin All-Father.

I am the one who speaks for the tree.

I am the king of all stories.

Summary

Odin is a fictional character that appears in comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character is first mentioned in Journey into Mystery #85 (Oct. 1962), then first appears in Journey into Mystery #86 (Nov. 1962), and was adapted from the Odin of Norse mythology by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. He is the father of Thor and former king of Asgard.

There are two extremely contradictory characterisations for the character.

One, primarily established by Stan Lee and Tom DeFalco, has portrayed Odin as continuously being extremely wise, virtuous, compassionate, righteous, responsible, and benevolent, with him acting as one of the "big goods" of the Marvel Universe; whereas the other, later, characterisation, primarily established by Matt Fraction and Jason Aaron, has portrayed Odin as an irrational, immature, abusive, sadistic, foul-mouthed, barbaric, sadistic, and genocidal patriarch, due to extensive childhood trauma from abuse at the hands of his father Bor.

As these two opposing portrayals of the character's personality are thematically irreconcileable, and make no logical sense together, we have mostly adhered to Odin's more classic portrayals for his most character-defining quotes above.

Attack Potency: Varies (Due to the Odinsleep factor, which causes his Odinforce to go up and down. When in a near depleted state, he can enter the Odinsleep to restore his powers) from Galaxy level (At his weakest, he is almost consistently still portrayed as comparable to the likes of Thor. Fought evenly against Jane Foster Thor[114][Notes 2]) to High Hyperverse level (His fight against Seth tore at the fabric of the multiverse itself and sent forth shockwaves that rippled through every plane of reality, with Silver Surfer stating that the forces unleashed by them could "rock our entire continuum,"[115] thus affecting the internal contents of Eternity itself. His power is said to be comparable to Galactus's own,[116][117] and the two stood evenly matched in direct confrontation[118][119]). Can ignore conventional durability via several abilities

Speed: Varies. Massively FTL+ (Should scale to his son) to Infinite (Instantly sent Thor hurling from Earth to Asgard,[70][120] which are repeatedly stated to be spaced apart by an infinite distance. Standard Equipment: His spear Gungnir, the Scepter Supreme, the Odinsword

Intelligence: At least Genius (He devised a plan that included faking Thors banishment to expose a traitor in Asgard,[124] used Ego-Prime as a way to evolve certain humans into new gods that could be presented to the Celestials,[125] let Thor fight Surtur unaided so that the battle would weaken Surtur before Odin began his attack,[126] allowed himself to be transformed into Surtur as part of a plan[127] that would result in Thor banishing Surtur and Ymir and leaving them in suspended animation,[128] laid out a plan to defeat the Dark Gods, going as far as wiping his own contingency plan from his memory to ensure it works out,[129] was called a master manipulator by Loki, who relayed Odins plan of using the World Tree's weakened condition to his advantage by banishing all Asgardians to earth and stripping them of their memories to trick Yggdrasil into thinking Ragnarok had already occurred and thus allow the Asgardians to continue living without fear of the event, and while he had initially planned for Thor to defeat Seth and restore the memories of the Asgardians he had a back up plan of having 3 individuals with Thors powers to serve as his replacement should anything happen to him[130])

Weaknesses: Requires taking the Odin Sleep once a year to replenish his powers
