What is Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered?

The year 2020 has been rife with remasters and remakes. After 10 years, one of the most legendary installments of Need for Speed returns. We're getting Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, which is intended to improve the shortcomings of the original, and provide much better visual setting at a more affordable price. Interestingly, there will also be new content.

What's new in Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered?

In many ways, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered will just be an old game in a new guise. The driving model will be retained, i.e. more focused on providing arcade gameplay with spectacular chases, rather than relying on realism. We'll get 77 cars will be put at our disposal, and the remaster will offer the entire content of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, including five DLCs. The game will be expanded with 30 challenges, support for network modes and cross-play, allowing you to play with players using other platforms.

OUR EXPECTATIONS

Corporations are governed by their own idiosyncrasies, which sometimes result in completely incomprehensible decisions, such as the release of a remastered version of Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, which not only was a reboot itself, but for a 10-years-old game still looks and plays pretty well. My opinion is that this game wasn't created because there was any particular demand for it; it's only jumping on the bandwagon.

If it was a remaster of the original Hot Pursuit from 1998, I would be completely elated: the roster of classic cars, old-school championships and closed routes would be exactly what I'm looking for in games. I've had enough of open worlds and being constantly online. But that's not how you make money, so people like me have got to settle for games like the cute Hotshot Racing (highly recommended!).

The 10-year-old Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit remaster is another example of how poorly Electronic Arts understands the concept of remakes. It was a proper racer, but it did nothing to rejuvenate the genre, or indeed the series itself. It is a pity that it was decided to go easy and move the game to the current consoles with minimal changes. There are many older NFS installments, which I would very much like to play in a refreshed version, without the archaisms and with an expanded roster of cars. So, thanks, I'll pass. I can still remember the game too wall to pay thirty bucks for it.
