Ron Ripley

Ron Ripley is a husband and father surviving in New England, a place which seems to be getting colder every day. He grew up across from a disturbingly large cemetery where he managed to scare himself every night before going to bed. Mostly because of the red lights that people put in front of the headstones. Those things are just plain creepy to a kid.

Ron enjoys writing horror, military history and driving through the small towns of New England with his family, collecting books and giving impromptu lectures on military history to his family, who enjoy ignoring him during those dreadful times.

"Disappointed"

Thoughts:

I am not doing a small backstory on this book. Normally I like books by Ron Ripley - I have been reading his books for years but this book did nothing for me. Dragged along in quite a few spots and when I mean dragged I am talking about falling asleep through parts of the book - there were tons of characters to keep track of and the characters to me were not attachable. I could not see myself spending time with any of them.

Also I felt that this book concept almost parallels another author that I have read with the same type of story so in one way to me it was not an original story theme with the main character being able to communicate with the dead in a cemetery. I am not going to name drop the other author but there is a series of books that I have read with the main character communicating with the dead that is far better than this book turned out to be.

I will not be continuing on with the series. I have not given up hope either on Ripley as I do have some other books I own by him that I need to read. But this book did absolutely nothing for me and thankfully I didn't spend a dime on it - this was a freebie that I grabbed on sale a couple of years ago. Giving this book one "Snooze Fest" star!

The story is unusual, and it does hold the reader's interest...until...it just stops. Reading the description of the book and the others that were out after this one, I see that this is the first book in the start of a series, "Tormented Souls" That's fine. I read a lot of series...however...I want the book I'm currently reading to have a conclusion of some kind...any kind...not just stopping. "That's All folks". This seems like the reader is being forced to buy the next book in order to finish the previous book. I don't know for sure, but I imagine that if that idea worked the first time, it may go on like that. Back to this story. It was a good story. Actually, it was an excellent story. It had loads of promise. I just wish that it had provided some type of wrap-up. If you want to have the whole story...you have to buy or borrow the next book. I love ghost stories and this one looked and sounded like I would want to give it a permeant home. Now I have to decide if it's going to have any "siblings" or be an "only child".

I love Ron Ripley and Scare street writers!!

This is a good book and I happily already know Shane is sneaking in somewhere. Yay!!! I love the way your books play out and would like to see some movies. I think they would be so good😊😃😀

I really liked the concept but the execution was flawed. The beginning was bland, there are too many characters, and there is no conclusion which is confusing. A little tweaking is needed to make this a great book.

I won this copy of Coffin Cemetery from Library Thing.

Dan Tate. Ex-husband, ex-journalist and current caretaker of Coffin Cemetery. Dan was present, doing an interview, at the highschool when an active shooter shot and killed several students and injured others. He held the girl that he was interviewing as she passed away. Now PTSD has ruined his life, his marriage, his ability to function normally. He lives in an old school house located right next to the cemetery.

Janet Ladd is a scammer. She can see the ghosts of the dead that have stayed behind, attached to their homes. She has three deadly ghosts who scare the living occupants, sometimes beating and even killing them. These ghosts find the objects that the friendly apparitions have attached themselves to, Janet moves the objects (which also moves them) to Coffin Cemetery. She then scams the living occupants by convincing them that she can exorcise or remove these evil, vile ghosts that are living in their homes for a fee. Meanwhile, Beverly (the biggest and baddest) gains the power of the entities that have been removed. Janet's deadly co-conspirators are taking lives and drawing attention. They've settled on an elderly woman whose home holds a massive amount of power.

The ghosts that have been moved to Coffin Cemetery make their presence known by sending Eli, a young boy, who they believe will enable Dan to be more accepting of his ghostly neighbors. Eli tells Dan that he's dead and that he and the other ghosts need his help. Will Dan be able to overcome his fears and find his inner strength?

I found myself stuck in the book, unable to move until it was finished. I loved the characters. Especially Dan, Eli, and Mary. I was rooting for Dan. My heart went out to him for all of the things that he had seen, the way that it had changed his life (and not for the better). I loved how even though it was the ghosts who came to Dan for help, Eli ended up helping Dan as well. By trying to save Mary, Mary saved him. He broke through the boundaries that his PTSD and OCD had set for him. He got passed the fears that held him captive. He did all of those things without even realizing that he was doing it because he was determined to help Eli, the other ghosts, and Mary.

The only thing that I did not like about this book was that we really have no background on anyone but Dan and even then it's not much. I would love to have known why Janet was so determined to use the vile and vicious ghosts and to let them (Beverly in particular) use her. I felt like some things were rushed through when it would've been better to have them explained. Thus the 4/5 stars.

I really enjoyed this novel, but I definitely felt it both ended too abruptly and also cried out for a sequel, because I am not ready to give these characters up. Gratifyingly, a couple of them reappear in Short Horror Stories Vol. 2, so that is encouraging for a sequel.

I empathized strongly with the characters a d their struggles. This is Supernatural Horror, combining both human evil and spirit evil, including ghosts who were evil in life and are still evil in Death.

Ended too quickly

Love all of Ron Ripley’s stories, but just when this one got going, it ended too abruptly. Can not wait for it to continue as I’m really warming up to the new characters. There is a hint of maybe running into an old friend from his past books. Like your favorite treat, it leaves you wanting more.

Always a good read

Mr Ripley,
I have read every one of your books and have enjoyed them all. You are excellent at your craft and very gifted.
I look forward to the continuing adventures of Dan and Eli and suspect our old friend Shane may even appear at some point.
I'll be waiting!

I love Ron Ripley and ScareStreet. I feel that I've read this story before with another of his characters. From Dan and the school house and graveyard to Mary and her house. It may have been a few years ago. Either way, it's still a good read. I'm up to the "last" book in the series?? You never know, there could be more.

I didn’t think I was going to like this story, but book one turned out to be pretty good. Dan’s a good character, relatable and realistic.

The story is interesting and filled with adventure. The narrator gave the characters life, but the ending was blunt.

Really

I read till the dog was killed! I know people are evil and hurt ,kill animals but not needed in the book. I won't watch or read a book where animals are hurt.

I liked that it was easy to read, there are a lot of well developed characters, and every story was enjoyable. Bit it wasn’t scary. At all. I even read at night because then i get more scared while reading, but nothing. I didn’t feel anything.

Started out kind of like a slow burner for me, but very intriguing indeed. As I followed Dan and the others through this tale the more deeper and interesting it became. I must continue into the second book, I gotta know what happens next! I highly recommend this spooky and interesting take on the paranormal. 👍 👍

I'm so angry with the end of this book. I was invested in this tale, and liked the idea of brutish ghosts being used essentially as hitmen by mediums. It did drag a little in places, but I liked the exploration of how Dan changed after the shooting and you can see the stark contrast during the flashback scenes.

The issue I have with this book, is the ending was absolutely awful!

Not only did I not realise it was the end of the book until I turned the page and that was it, when I reflected on the fact it was indeed the ending, it became massively anti-climactic. This is the second book in a wee I have read where the end of the book was simply like the end of a mid-chapter scene rather than a definitive ending. I get that this is a 6 book series, but each book still needs a clear and definitive ending to separate them from the others, and this simply didn't have it. And for me, that really tainted the experience.

This is a great start to the newest series. I've come to look forward to each book released by Ripley. They are somewhat similar just due to the nature of his ghosts and they're all in the same world, but it doesn't take away from the story. Each book has its own quirks and characters. The characters are easy to love or easy to hate, depending on the situation.

The only thing I can say that bothers me with this book (and his others) is that I don't care for how the ghosts can physically touch their victims, but the victims can't make physical contact with the ghosts. To me, that feels unbalanced. Despite that concept, I have loved almost all of Ripley's books. There is plenty of action to keep my interest and the character development works for me.

I definitely recommend this series and I look forward to reading the rest of it.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher free of charge.

Coffin Cemetery is quite an interesting ghost story, we have a protagonist who whilst surviving a school shooting, lost his family (to divorce and his own demons), and a suspicious medium who is using violent ghosts to drive owners from their houses so that she can evict the peaceful ghosts within and harness their residual energy.

Whilst some people have complained their were too many characters, I felt the balance was spot on giving you a good perspective of what was happening in the town of Anger and provided a good canvas for painting a picture of the conflicts going on between the parties within the story.

My only complaint is that the ending was quite abrupt, but that's not uncommon with series books and as book 2 is ready to go it's only a small complaint. Overall, it was a solid entertaining read.

What a strange read and even stranger ending!

I gave this story a generous four stars but three and a half would have been more accurate. Ghosts physically interacting with the living? Apparently so. However, they are able to physically harm us, even kill us but we cannot lay a proverbial finger on them ( unless we are holding iron or salt). I really struggled to get my head around some of the concepts in this book. The ending was so sudden it left me confused and rather annoyed. Still, the author probably wants to make sure we read the sequel.

Another great book by Mr. Ripley

I have this unexplainable urge to get myself salt & iron. This is going to be another kick-ass series. I read the Berkley Street series and this series is equally as good. Janet needs a bitch-slap. Just for what she does to people. AND I was happy to see a reference to ghost destroyer extrodinare Shane Ryan. This is a great story so far. I can't wait to see where it takes us!!! I do hope we get some background on Janet and Beverly. Love to see what makes Bev why she is the way she is.

Creepy good read

Ron Ripley did it again, he has hooked me with another ghostly good series! I can't wait to see how the characters of Dan and Eli take shape, not to mention Mary and her house. I absolutely love the name of the town and the small town feel is definitely there. I hope the wait isn't long for the next installment of this spooktacular series!

Another great book by Ron Ripley

I love a good ghost story. Ron Ripley sure knows how to write them. Plenty of "goodies" and "baddies." I wasn't sure about the ending. I didn't realise it was the end. I was still looking for more action and I felt it was a bit unfinished. But I still liked the story and the character's

"'Small steps, Elijah,' he would tell me. 'They can cover greater distances than leaping.'"

This was decent. Had some very interesting elements and I liked Dan. There were too many characters, though, too many POVs being thrown about especially since the book isn't that long. I get why they were there but it was a bit much.

Janet was annoying af. But... she's supposed to be, I think (hope), so that's fine. Nothing about her worked for me. I didn't like reading her chapters either. Really just didn't want to hear her voice at all...

I liked the bits and pieces we get about ghosts and how they operate in this world. It is very similar to a lot of stories - more of a mix. And it's done in a way that isn't just info-dump. A lot of it isn't even known to the MCs. Well, mostly Dan (between what I'd call the two mains, Janet and him). His actions are gut-based and how he can help. I mostly liked the things surrounding Dan's POV, like Mary and Eli, and his struggles.

I also appreciated that there was no romance involved here. Sometimes that's refreshing.

I really liked the ending. Buut! I did not like how we don't get more of this story solved. That is my own fault, however, since I didn't pay attention to the fact that this is a series. I got it free and randomly chose it because of the horror and it being shorter in length. I might continue the series cuz I'm interested in seeing how it plays out, but I don't think I care too much honestly. So it's a toss-up.

While this is horror, it mostly just deals with the ghosts committing murder and a bit of psychological bits, I suppose? There are some descriptive scenes surrounding those.

(2.5 stars rounded up.)

Please note: I was given a copy of this book and have voluntarily decided to give it this honest review.

Dan Tate was able to survive a high school shooting that left many teachers and students dead. He was able to save several students and was considered a hero, but his life falls apart when he develops OCD and PTSD. His marriage, as well as his relationship with his children, disintegrate. He gets a job as a caretaker at a historical schoolhouse with a cemetery. Janet Ladd also lives in the same city but has a totally different, and dangerous, life. She has the help of several ghosts who haunt a house so that she can arrange an exorcism for a generous fee that the owners gladly pay. Her partner is a ghost with a hidden agenda. And the ghosts that are just supposed to scare the residents of the houses, lose control and start to kill. Meanwhile Dan is approached by the ghost of a young boy that tells him of what is going on and asks for his help. He agrees and is assisted by other ghosts, as well as humans, to stop the fake medium and her out-of-control ghosts.
I enjoyed this book. I felt that it introduced the main characters of this series very well. Dan, a broken man, is able to overcome his OCD and PTSD. He makes friends, both living and dead, that help him overcome his personal obstacles in order to help others. I look forward to reading the other volumes of this series.

I think well written disappointment is an apt description of this book unfortunately. The suspense steadily builds, the violent scenes are descriptive, main character building is pretty good - Dan’s very likable. Then the book just stops before any kind of real climax and resolution, so it feels like poor storytelling and strangely like a car salesman’s idea of incentive to purchase the sequel. I’d decided while reading the book I would buy the sequel because I was really enjoying it, but now I feel oddly duped into it. I will still buy it haha but more because I can’t stand having absolutely zero resolution to the main plot points. So I’ll be pretty disappointed if this is just the way these books are written and I have to get through multiple books before any kind of resolution and growth of the plot happens, but I have noticed the other books in the series have much higher ratings. So fingers crossed!

Dan Tate is trying to move on with his life after a traumatic experience. He is given the job of cemetery caretaker where he is befriended by the ghost of a young boy, Eli. Together they try to fight bad ghosts from hurting the people of Anger, New Hampshire.
This was an entertaining story that was easy to follow along, but not so easy to guess the outcome. Sometimes it would get confusing with all the characters and trying to keep track of them throughout the story. I enjoy the thought put into creating rules, boundaries, and abilities of the ghosts. That made for a very entertaining aspect of the book. The back story of the main character is told in little bits throughout the book which gives the character more depth as well as a mini story within the story. Very clever!

Always a Pleasure

Dan Tate has a lot of issues. Seeing and conversing with ghosts is one of many. He lives alone in the schoolhouse next to the town's cemetary and normally doesn't have any visitors. Then a lady shows up and she seems to be able to see and talk to ghosts as well...only problem is that the ghosts seemed to be deathly afraid of her. Dan witnesses all of this and he has to ask himself what would make something already dead so afraid? Will he be able to live long enough to find out?

This is a great series with its own set of rules and mythology concerning ghost lore. Very unique lore that works really well in these set of books.
Highly recommend if you like haunting type stories but with a unique take.

Format: audiobook
Narrator: Thom Bowers

I would happily have given this book 4 stars, it’s unusual and interesting and I was invested to see how it would play out, who is the secret figure controlling the shots, how will Dan Tate help when he can’t help himself?
The reason I gave 3 stars is because the book just stopped! Things are building nicely, I’m looking forward to it all coming together, chapter 45 Dan makes a small breakthrough, then nothing, it goes to a preview for the next book???
I know there’s a book 2, some series have several books but this isn’t a series, book 1 literally stops mid story so be aware that if you want to read/hear the whole story you’ll have to buy both books, I find it deceptive that there is nothing in the description that makes that clear.

Loved it

This book (the first in a series) has it all people who see ghosts, people who control ghosts, Juno scares, ptsd, and most of all more ghosts!!! This book is a fast ride that follows Dan, a man who has been through a traumatic experience that caused him to give up on his family, his job and his life in general. This experience caused him to be able to see ghosts and they like Dan. Well most do. There is also a woman who is controlling ghosts to do what she wants for her own benefit. Can Dan stop this woman’s plans before more people get hurt? Definitely read it to find out! Can’t wait to read the next one!!!!
