Quindi, quando poi l'editore italiano ha mantenuto l'impostazione, con la cover intrigante e gli spray-edges (ultimamente, il mio punto debole) ha decretato in automatico la mia volontà di iniziare la dilogia.
Il primo volume mi è piaciuto molto, l'ho letto in due serate e ho chiuso soddisfatta per i vari plot twist e anche per il finale, che non resta sospeso ma ha una sua coerenza.
Certo, non è un capolavoro e l'ambientazione riprende varie cose già viste (la guerra tra umani e creature soprannaturali, i clan di vampiri, lupi mannari, ecc. in giro per New York, la giovane e bella ladra piena di talenti nascosti), però c'è un elemento mitologico sinora non sfruttato tanto (la leggenda d’ispirazione celtica che narra l’alternarsi ciclico delle stagioni, vista come una battaglia tra il re Quercia estivo e il re Agrifoglio invernale), i personaggi non sono lagnosi e non se la tirano, non c'è l'amore istantaneo e incondizionato (finalmente) per l'eroe della storia. Anzi, manca proprio un vero eroe nella storia, dato che un po' tutti sono sul filo del positivo/negativo, quando non sono irrimediabilmente mostri malvagi e basta.
In realtà, la narrazione mi ha riportato indietro di quindici-venti anni, quando l'urban fantasy impazzava; ecco, mi è sembrato di riappropriarmi di quel filone, con questi elementi vincenti: una trama fresca e piena di azione, una protagonista tosta e simpatica, un lui morally grey molto sensuale. Senza dubbio è un genere di rottura rispetto a quello suo tradizionale; perché anche quando aveva affrontato il fantasy in passato, lo aveva sempre arricchito con una robusta componente erotica. Qui la componente manca del tutto, nel senso che c’è pochissimo sesso ed è un un po’ di convenienza (ci tocca farlo, insomma) perché va bene accettare come protagonista una donna moderna catapultata in un medioevo francese (un 1300 assolutamente sconsigliato a donne moderne), ma dopo anni di castità (se non sei una suora chiusa in un convento o una dama che attende il ritorno dell’amato dalle Crociate) certe esigenze si fanno insopprimibili e necessitano di una soddisfazione quantomeno meccanica. In effetti, l’unica soluzione escogitata per basare una trilogia su Elga è quella di farla travestire da maschio, facendole vivere tutte le esperienze riservate all’universo maschile del tempo (che sia la guerra, che sia la caccia, che sia il governo del maniero e persino il bisogno di provvedere a un erede).
Direi che la ricostruzione è valida e dettagliata, anche per quanto riguarda la situazione di nullità femminile. La stessa protagonista si secca per l’inconsistenza delle sue contemporanee e considera un effetto collaterale che i suoi soldati facciano bottino dei loro corpi e delle loro vite. L’aspetto meno soddisfacente è la trama; se fosse stato un unico libro con suo sviluppo completo, sarei riuscita a farmene una ragione; la trama risulta però povera per un primo volume che si interrompe sul più bello, quindi il mio giudizio è medio e resta tale.
Come lettrice, mi sono sentita poco ingolosita. Anche se non è la prima volta che apprezzo una serie di di questa autrice al secondo volume. Vedremo....more

Ma quando il nuovo incarico di lavoro prevede di restaurare un autentico castello, culla di un clan, Eden non può sapere che l'erede è la stessa conoscenza che continua ad occuparle la mente (insieme a incubi inquietanti e a saluti di spettri che paiono infestare le mura): e non si tratta, solo, di salvare, un gioiello architettonico, ma anche le sorti della distilleria e il futuro dello stesso Neal.
Mi è piaciuto tutto, dai personaggi all’ambientazione, compreso il MacLeod supponente e sfregiato che seduce con semplici spallate e occhi che danno le vertigini. Nelle linee principali riprende le caratteristiche tipiche dello stile di Lisa Marie Rice: un uomo dalla personalità dominante, nel lavoro e nel sesso, che riesce ad ammaliare e suscitare istant-love in un paio di scene; mi è sempre piaciuto lo stile dell'autrice (una vera regina e capostipite del genere RS), tuttavia qui è abbastanza affrettato, a causa della scarsità di pagine a disposizione (stai ancora riflettendo sul proclama "sei mia" di Marcus, e alle conseguenti reazioni, e lui è già passato alla modalità combattente-robot senza pietà) In effetti, come protagonista è abbastanza inquietante; nasconde il proprio passato, ha sospetti legami e nemici con la malavita (non viene spiegato tutto), ma quando appare in scena si è già focalizzato su una ragazza, pronto a tutto per conquistarla. Inoltre, ha oggettivamente una propensione maniacale per il controllo (eccessiva per i miei gusti).
D’altro canto per Eve pare quasi tutto normale; il suo mondo viene sconvolto, viene tradita nei propri affetti, stanno per ucciderla, eppure non fa una piega quando dal buio sbuca un supereroe che la salva, ma allo stesso tempo le impone di troncare carriera, cambiare vita e vivere nell’ombra insieme a lui. Ok, ci saranno anche i cattivi alle calcagna, ma non l’ho invidiata neanche un minuto.

Purtroppo si è rivelata una lettura non proprio trascinante, benché presentasse più di un motivo per piacermi molto: ambientazione storica, una Firenze medievale abbruttita e consumata dalla peste nera, una giovane donna che persegue comunque lo studio della medicina, soprattutto quella legata ai poteri delle pietre. Io stessa amo le pietre dure e i cristalli, e sono sempre stata affascinata dai benefici e dall’influenza che esercitano in base a tradizioni antichissime, sia in occidente che in oriente.
Pur avendo a disposizione un substrato così ricco e affascinante, supportato anche da un’evidente conoscenza personale, questo romanzo assomiglia a un dolce preparato con ingredienti di qualità che non è riuscito a lievitare bene. Una storia afflosciata è la prima metafora che mi viene in mente, perché la narrazione parte piatta e così resta, a tratti confusa, a tratti lentissima, quasi sempre priva di quel ritmo e di quel guizzo che incuriosiscono e che spingono il dito a girare la pagina per sapere cosa succederà dopo. Ginevra è ribelle, spregiudicata ma anche ingenua, inconsapevole dei pericoli a cui la espongono il suo essere donna e non maritata, povera, ma anche istruita, generosa ed emarginata. La Firenze del 1348 non è un luogo per donne, la paura del maligno e delle streghe è dietro l’angolo, la stessa peste è penetrata nelle mura e ha reso deserte piazze e chiese. Basta poco per incorrere nella dannazione eterna e nella collera di preti e maschi, specie investigando tra miracoli e reliquie.

Undici anni prima Stella, prossima ad andare all’università, ha commesso l’errore di illudersi che un amore travolgente le avrebbe cambiato la vita in meglio. So che è brutto definire errore un grande amore, ma se una tale scelta significa rinunciare ai propri sogni e non avere la giusta compensazione per ciò che si sacrifica, poteva essere meglio ponderata.
Dopo una prima gravidanza inattesa, Stella si è dunque ritrovata a mandare avanti il ranch di famiglia, un po' la strada senza uscita che si era ripromessa di evitare. E la vita è stata dura, tra lutti, solitudine, un marito non all’altezza del sogno, continui pesi sulle spalle. Per fortuna, ci sono anche cinque adorabili piccoli piccoli guerrieri, i suoi bambini che cercano di farsi roccia per sostenerla. E, per fortuna, ci sono le seconde occasioni e ci sono uomini che mantengono le loro promesse, come Jasper.
Un romanzo coccola che scalda il cuore, perché parte da premesse malinconiche e amare arrivando a rischiarare l’orizzonte, riempiendoci di speranza, comunque sia, sulla possibilità che il grande amore (a volte) sia dietro l’angolo. Da tempo desideravo leggere un romanzo ambientato nel mondo delle beghine, una sorta di ordine laico protetto da Luigi IX, re di Francia, che consentiva alle donne sole del tempo (parliamo della seconda metà del 1200) di non dover decidere tra due uniche esistenze, ovvero sposata e morta di parto prima dei vent’anni, oppure suora e reclusa in un convento. Le beghine potevano vivere all’interno delle mura, dedicandosi allo studio, alla preghiera e aiutandosi tra loro, oppure potevano uscire ed esercitare le arti del commercio, soprattutto nella vendita dei tessuti o di altri beni. Se foste vissute tra il 1260 e il 1400, e foste state dotate di una minima cultura e di un patrimonio proprio, probabilmente avreste abbracciato il beghinaggio per sfuggire a fratelli prepotenti o a conoscenti avidi di inglobarlo tramite la dote. Il principale centro delle beghine a Parigi viene però sconvolto intorno al 1310 da due avvenimenti terrificanti: la distruzione dei templari, altro ordine laico-religioso ricco e autonomo, e perciò inviso a Chiesa e sovrano, e la morte sul rogo di Marguerite Porete.
Ho incrociato questa figura più volte in passato, non sono mai riuscita a inquadrarla bene, eppure continuo a subirne un certo fascino. Basti dire Marguerite professava esperienze oggi modernissime: cercava l'incontro con Dio, senza l'intermediazione religiosa, commentava e interpretava liberamente le Scritture, addirittura le insegnava. C'era tutto per dichiararla eretica e bruciarla sul rogo (il suo manoscritto mistico, Miroir des âmes simples et anéanties, il più antico della letteratura francese scritto in volgare, è sopravvissuto all'oblio venendo copiato in segreto più e più volte volte per secoli).
La sua fine ha certamente aiutato anche la fine dell’esperienza delle beghine; non potevano essere tollerate queste donne libere, intrepide, orgogliose di essere femmine non soggette al potere maschile, fiduciose di contare sui propri talenti.
Detto questo, il romanzo della Kiner offre uno spaccato di quella vita anticonvenzionale e coraggiosa, anche se resta un po’ in modalità arretrata; la narrazione si apre quando siamo già al declino, accentua il fatalismo senza speranza, liquida la Porete in poche pagine, più interessata a raccontare la fine, che non lo splendore raggiunto solo pochi decenni prima. Un peccato; attenderò con fiducia un romanzo che renda giustizia alle beghine in modo più corposo....more

Sylvester il duca è uno dei tanti corteggiatori della bellissima Yasmin, ma è assillato da una madre stravagante (uno dei personaggi più irreali e assurdi mai letti, una duchessa che si occupa di motori a vapore, anche se solo sulla carta, con modi grossolani e finto simpatici), la quale ha già deciso quale sarà la sua prossima nuora, ovvero lady Stella. Purtroppo, avendo letto il precedente libro, sapevo già come si sarebbe svolta la storia, e questo mi ha annoiato in modo inevitabile, ho sperato fino all’ultimo che il duca non scegliesse Stella solo per non darla vinta alla madre.
Stella, a sua volta, è lo stereotipo della fanciulla grassottella, erudita e con gli occhiali, goffa e maldestra, che raccatta gattini pulciosi e se li tiene addosso, e che dovrebbe suscitare solo per questo enorme simpatia. Beh, no. Risulta artificiosa ed estenuante.

Detto questo, ho sempre amato la figura di Federico II di Svevia, anche se qui lo troviamo solo sotto forma di fugace apparizione per dare vita a quello che sarà il motore della storia. Dopo aver combattuto a lungo per il suo imperatore, il cavaliere Angus aspira a rientrare in Germania per godersi finalmente i propri possedimenti. Ma l’imperatore ha piani diversi: per stabilizzare il regno, vuole organizzare matrimoni di stato (idea vecchia, ma spesso vincente) tra i propri soldati e le eredi delle famiglie potenti del luogo. Tra queste fanciulle papabili rientra anche l'unica figlia del duca di Sassovivo, ragazza scaltra che sta cercando a sua volta di difendere la propria libertà e autonomia rispetto a concorrenti, nemici e vicini che ambiscono le terre paterne (essendole preclusa ogni possibilità di mantenere il castello senza una protezione maschile). In effetti, prima per caso e poi per necessità, i due continuano a incontrarsi/scontrarsi, detestandosi e poi amandosi, sino a coalizzarsi contro il pericolo comune e ad arrendersi all’inevitabile risultato delle nozze.
Si tratta di un romanzo gradevole e ben scritto, antesignano storico degli enemies to lovers che tanto ci piacciono oggi, e sono felice di aver recuperato un’edizione nuova e tutta mia. L'unico piccolo neo resta la brevità, che non consente un adeguato approfondimento dei personaggi, anche perché ogni sviluppo è confinato nello spazio di pochi giorni. In buona sostanza, è bello ma finisce presto. Come desiderio personale, avrei voluto vedere Beatrice e Angus insieme anche dopo, magari alle prese con la vita del castello o a confronto con l’imperatore (di cui non mi stancherei mai di leggere).
Peraltro, se volete respirare le stesse atmosfere e prendervi un ulteriore vacanza virtuale nel mondo dello Stupor Mundi, vi consiglio assolutamente un altro romanzo di Ornella Albanese, IL FALCONIERE DEL RE....more

Primo libro di serie e prima lettura in assoluto per quanto riguarda questa autrice. Nel complesso il mio giudizio è positivo, anche se le premesse consentivano di aspettarsi qualcosa di più.
Ho trovato molto interessante il personaggio maschile, un duca trentenne poco amato dal padre, e che si trascina dall'infanzia dei disturbi comportamentali e ossessioni compulsive (certo, all'epoca non c'erano diagnosi in merito, ma dalla narrazione traspare una certa mania del controllo, un costante bisogno di possedere e accumulare cose e beni materiali, una forte tendenza a calcolare tutto e a non lasciarsi andare con i sentimenti per il terrore di divenire debole e oggetto del giudizio degli altri). In buona sostanza, Lysander è incapace di amare, ma non per sua colpa: semplicemente, non riesce a decifrare il nuovo sentimento di cui sta facendo esperienza. Il soprannome "Stone" (pietra) gli calza a pennello.
Se lui è un po’ la Bestia della situazione, la Bella è anche una Cenerentola, una gentildonna anglofrancese, esponente di una famiglia caduta in rovina, che sopravvive facendo la ballerina classica, e che tuttavia mantiene il proprio orgoglio e il proprio onore.
L'inizio è strano e accattivante, poi la trama assume i contorni di un Pretty woman in salsa vittoriana (il duca "assume" la ragazza per un finto fidanzamento), e ci introduce a un gruppo di donne del ton anticonformiste (qui le licenze storiche si sprecano), e che immagino saranno le protagoniste dei prossimi libri.
Quattro stelle perché è un libro introduttivo e paga pegno, anche se il ritmo è abbastanza discontinuo, con un finale allungato senza un vero motivo e poco approfondimento psicologico per la situazione di Stone (è arduo pensare che certe fissazioni potessero svanire con il mero potere curativo dell’amore). Si parte con Mina, una ragazza coraggiosa, già rovinata da uno scandalo, che si affanna a proteggere il fratello, a sua volta erede scapestrato di una famiglia nobile decaduta. Quando lui viene coinvolto in un duello, lei si traveste da maschio per partecipare al posto suo, ma, tempo due minuti, ed è stata già scoperta (non ci voleva un genio, in verità). Inizia quindi una seconda fase con Mina segretaria di un conte inarrivabile, algido e libertino. Ed è subito grande amore, ostacolato da tutti.
L’ho trovato un romanzo pasticciato, confuso, dove non era chiaro verso cosa si volesse andare a parare. Eppure, nonostante le imperfezioni evidenti, vi sono pagine di grande tenerezza. Mina è solare, libera e spensierata. Impossibile non provare simpatia per lei, e fa sorridere che Simon, il suo datore di lavoro, cerchi in tutti i modi di licenziarla per evitare la resa dei conti con il cuore. Nel complesso la Reid ha scritto di meglio, stavolta ci regala una trama goffa semi-salvata da qualche guizzo di romanticismo intenso....more
