I listened to it, and I had to go back and re-listen to so many parts because I zoned out.
However the twist had me screaming in my kitchen soooo I obviously didn’t see it coming.
Overall, I really loved this series and I’m so sad to be done! ...more

Max is the shining star of this series for me. He is a sweet, self aware, angel of a man. I found myself looking forward to his POVs the most!
Here’s why I can’t give this 5 stars: - while the pacing of this book was SO MUCH better, it still felt a teeny long - I need a longer epic final battle ok?? But this is a problem I find in most fantasy books tbh - I really struggled to find an emotional connection to Tissanah in this book - but that’s a me problem. - I think this trilogy could have easily been a longer duology
The epilogue put me in my grave.
Overall, I am so happy I read this series! I’d give it a solid 4⭐️, and I think it needs to be talked about more!!

It felt really repetitive for the first 70ish% of the book, but the last 25% was great.
I was worried about the new POV in this book, but it honestly became my favorite of the three.
The love story is written beautifully. The world is wonderful. The villain is interesting. It’s mainly the pacing that felt off to me.
Such an epic cliffhanger, but I would be lying if I didn’t say the length of the third book makes me nervous with Carissa’s pacing lol
SPOILERS BELOW . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . My biggest issue with this book was all the war strategy and battles just for a bigger villain (aka fey) to be introduced at the end? It made the first 60% of the book feel so pointless…
Nura I hate you. Max you’re a grumpy angel.
I really hope Aefe turns on Caduan in book three...more

I really really enjoyed this one and couldn’t really put it down! I’ll always be a sucker for a trial in a book, but this one felt really unique and eerie.
My main issue was that the ending felt a little rushed, and since this is technically a standalone I was left wanting more… I also found it to be a little predictable but still so fun!
It reminded me of a very popular series with sisters and a game and a blonde bad boy but the spooky adult version lol...more

I’m really sad I didn’t like this more. It was such a unique/cool premise but fell flat for me. I found it to be quite boring unfortunately.. 1.5ish⭐️
I’m really sad I didn’t like this more. It was such a unique/cool premise but fell flat for me. I found it to be quite boring unfortunately.. I didn’t feel a strong connection to most of the characters, and the conflict never honestly felt high stakes to me (even though they’re literally saving the world???)
I sadly don’t think I’ll be reading the next book in this duology, but I will be reading other books by Jemisin! I really enjoyed her writing, but this book just wasn’t for me. It was genuinely a love letter to New York, and I just don’t love NY enough lol ...more

I was confused this entire book.. I kept waiting for things to make sense and they never really did. I don’t normally mind flowery writing but holy this whole book was just metaphors.
I think there’s so many people who would love this book, I’m just definitely not the target audience lol...more

I loved Cade, Willa, and Luke’s dynamic so so much! It was heartwarming, but the book lost me during the last 40%. Don’t get me wrong, I’m down for a spicy scene, but at some point it was every other chapter and it overshadowed the plot for me!
