Slay. I loved this story more than seemed fair. Tamsyn Muir was really Doing It in this one, I mean with her pulmonary arteries absolutely going to town. She gave me everything I wanted. She gave me everything I didn't think I wanted. She gave me everything I didn't even know to want. Is it blasphemous to have the hots for God? I said, outloud, to my roommates on more than one occasion, THIS is how you do a sequel. Although, was it a sequel? Sure! But was it really? Yes! And then, later, it was for certain. It was so refreshing to read a book where everything was picked up, turned over, and with an appraiser's hand, considerately placed, where every breath and step and sconce had a purpose. I laughed out loud. I giggled and kicked my legs in the air, tucking hair behind my ear as I turned the pages as fast as I could. I felt sick to my stomach. How great it feels to read something that is so thoughtfully stupid. I mean, real Dumb Shit. Now THAT'S genius fun. I'd rather drink sandpaper than read the next one. It's already on my bedside table....more

I'm talking next- level grim, like fully despondent. And yet! This is a story about borders, about escaping, about, if not perseverance or resilience, continuation. This story had an abundance of rape, of murder and sickness and trafficking and chemicals and disasters, and the titular Rina did not Give A Shit. It was strange that I could laugh out loud while the most horrendous crises were befalling this girl, not because they were funny, but because of her refusal to be assed. She killed someone? What a bother! Rina hates it all - she'd definitely hate me, and I love her for it. The horror she endures mixed with the banality with which she treats it made for a fascinating read that miraculously never depressed me. And through all the horror, characters still found joy, because that's life. Despite everything, Rina got to eat good food and have good sex, even if just a couple times. I think the translator did a great job, but I'd love to read the original as well, I think the story would hit harder with the nuance of Korean....more
Thank you to Penguin for the review copy. So, this book was not good, but it was a bit of fun. I should say this is the first romance genre book I've Thank you to Penguin for the review copy. So, this book was not good, but it was a bit of fun. I should say this is the first romance genre book I've ever read, so I'm no expert on how these books usually go, but the "plot" was so clichéd not one sentence of it surprised me. What DID surprise me was the unconscionable and utterly insane work-place racism that the "characters" faced, and then rolled their eyes at and brushed off. I was praying this book would take a turn and all of Ember's coworkers would be brutally massacred. I mean my GOD it was over the top horrendous!! For a debut author, the writing was not great, but still leagues more competent than certain wildly popular romantasy titles I've had the misfortune of reading. I think the author had the best of intentions and I was SO excited to hear there was an Indigenous romance coming out, but I couldn't quite tell who this book was written for. Despite what the book said, it almost seemed aimed at a non-Native audience, which felt like an... odd (?) choice. The attempts at feminism and LGBT representation were... attempted! Not sure who those were aimed at, either. The characters were pretty one dimensional and not as funny as they said they were - what WAS hilarious were the sex scenes, which were not at all sexy (although I am a gay man, so ladies? Did this do it for you? Should I be growling at my dates and promising them "earth-shattering orgasms"?) I guess Danuwoa was hot, and... that's it. I did really like whenever he spoke ᏣᎳᎩ ᎦᏬᏂᎯᏍᏗ, that was beautiful. Also there was no way Ember was supposed to be 25, she spoke, thought, and acted like a Millennial. And she and Danuwoa did not love each other, they hardly knew each other. All that being said, I had fun reading this book and was looking forward to it every night since I started it. Lots of laughs, (mostly at it, but what are you gonna do?) I recommend it, I guess....more
