Carrie Vaughn’s “The Temptation of Robin Green” is a short story in the Kitty Norville series that gives a glimpse inside the secret government agency that poses a threat to all paranormals. Biology researcher Robin Green is an Army lieutenant working in the facility, where she encounters a variety of paranormal species (no spoilers) and finds herself alarmingly attracted to one of them. Rick (Ricardo de Aliva) is a minor character in the tale, which takes place centuries after “Conquistador de la Noche,” and before “Wild Ride.”
I love how Vaughn’s short stories help to flesh out the characters and fill in context for the series. It reminds me of the many short stories that I enjoyed with the Jane Yellowrock series by Faith Hunter....more

Carnal followsCarnal: The Beast Who Loved Me takes place immediately after Vampire Hunter, Book 8 of Knights of Black Swan, and Journey Man (Book 9). Carnal follows Rosie Storm to another dimension where she flees to sort out her hurt feelings and to find some purpose for her life after the end of book 8 (view spoiler)[ when Glenn chooses being a Hunter for the Order of Black Swan after Rosie gave him an ultimatum to choose between her and active duty as a Hunter (hide spoiler)].
Family friend, the angel Kellareal (a.k.a. Lally to Rosie) answers Rosie’s plea to hide her by depositing her on a planet where he had secretly moved a group of human/animal hybrids to save them from being exterminated by the humans who had created them on yet another planet. In return for being saved and transported from their home planet, the hybrids agreed to serve as protectors for the humans of their new planet home, who were in danger from the hybrids they had created.
As part of her deal with Kellareal, Rosie agrees to live as an apparent human and not use her demon or witch abilities while there—so as not to endanger Kellareal’s project by bringing it to the attention of the gods and goddesses from whom he was keeping it a secret—said gods and goddesses having caused serious problems with their experimental manipulation of species on various planets.
Carnal: The Beast Who Loved Me is Rosie’s coming of age story, as she experiences work for the first time and learns first-hand that using her considerable powers can have far reaching and unintended results and thus must be done with the utmost of care.
Rosie’s poignant and gut-wrenching experiences in Carnal make her who she is in Journey Man. Although Carnal is Book 1 of the spin-off series Exiled, it is also essential to Rosie and Glenn’s story in Knights of Black Swan. Don’t miss Rosie’s journey to herself....more

I had to adjust my usual appetite for fast-paced action and slow down to enjoy the rich imagery and the skillful way Ms. Harrow evoked emotions and made the heroine such a sympathetic and enjoyable character. The action picks up significantly in the second half. No spoiler's on the unique plot.
There was a dash of romance to sweeten the fantasy-adventure story, and Samuel, the swarthy Italian grocer's son with the warm brown eyes is a very likable hero. "He consumed books as if they were as necessary to his health as bread and water, but they were rarely the books he had been assigned.” January and Samuel's shared love of penny dreadfuls was an integral part of their friendship as they grew from children to young adults. Although the story is not predominantly a romance, there is lots of love to keep you warm and that plucked my sentimental heart strings: love of family, love between friends, and love that blooms between the childhood friends as they grow to adulthood.
The villains were reprehensible and suitably scary.
January developed into her role as a strong heroine, and she learned some of that from my choice of the best supporting character, Miss Jane Irimu. I enjoyed picturing Jane as the fierce huntress she was in her adopted alien world. I don't know if a sequel is planned. If there is, sign me up.
As January wished for the reader of her memoirs, “I hope you will find the cracks in the world and wedge them wider, so the light of other suns shines through; I hope you will keep the world unruly, messy, full of strange magics; I hope you will run through every open Door and tell stories when you return."...more
