I was pleasantly surprised by not only the content in this smoking hot read, but by how much I enjoyed it. I'm not much for women as the sexual aggressor; in fact, it tends to turn me off, but this author pulled it off and made me want to put on my bossy pants. Alas, Gabe is only just fiction ;)
Synopsis Madison owns a bookstore and has somehow become known for the naughty books in her store. The big chains want to be family friendly, and Madison doesn't worry about censoring herself. Therefore, her niche is smutty books.
The opening scene is Madison getting bent over the counter by one of the new applicants for her assistant job. He's a dirty talker, a rough and ready, pushy and bossy man who is very (ahem) oral, both with words and in that way. When her second applicant for the job walks in on them, Madison doesn't even have it in her to be mortified. This isn't really the norm for her, but she's rolling with it. Of course, applicant number two is much more qualified for the job...both as her assistant and as her newest obsession.
Gabe is a shy, awkward, sexually repressed but gorgeous man. Madison enjoys messing with him, but she's frustrated as well, because her own antics are turning her on almost as much as him. Gabe needs instruction, and apparently, Madison needs obedience.
My thoughts: I am so thrilled that I enjoyed this as much as I did. I think what got to me was how different this author's writing style is...it's a bit choppy and abrupt at times. Then it turns around and gets very emotional and flowery with the prose. Being inside Madison's head was somewhat confusing at times, but it didn't take long to realize that was because she's kind of confused herself.
Like I said before, I don't usually like women who are aggressive. Madison was almost more so passive-aggressive, at least at first. She and Gabe had an obvious sexual connection right up front, and her teasing him in the bookstore before finally forcing him to face up to his desires was a lot of fun...and a lot of sexy, as well. Gabe wasn't so much of a pushover as I initially thought. He actually was really open to exploring what he truly desired, and Madison was great at pulling it out of him. Great enough, in fact, that I was completely taken in.
Although there was definitely a romance within these pages, I'd consider this primarily an erotic book. Read it when you need something full of smutty, sweaty, sexy goodness. Don't be shy...try something new :D Just like I did... you may like it....more

The setup for this story was interesting and somewhat new. A politician's daughter who feels responsible for her sister's death is all grown up. Her uncle, whom she was very close to, dies and his funeral brings together all of his loved ones, including Angie's long time crush Evan Black and his "boys", who were friends and students of her uncle. Evan and Angie have a connection, but this is the first time Angie has seen her want reflected back at her from Evan. Only Evan has a promise to Angie's uncle (who apparently saw their lustfully delicious gazes years ago) that he will not mess with Angie.
EVAN So that was okay, but the execution left me in turns scratching my head and bored. First of all, Evan is supposedly a bad boy who is into bad things. But we don't figure out, or even get a hint of, any specifics for nearly the whole book. He's just bad. And he tries to fight his attraction to Angie and uphold his promise to her uncle, but not for long, and not very hard, actually. It was more of a token resistance, really.
ANGIE Angie felt like a little girl playing at being grown up, in my opinion. Her sister's death and her subsequent guilt was such a trope and it didn't feel genuine. Not to mention how she tried to act in turns like a sexpot...then suddenly is very awkward and inexperienced, so later she demands to be treated as an equal by the group of baddies and ends up squealing and acting very childish and girlie. Her character was just very inconsistent. To be honest, she had few redeeming qualities for me.
THE SEX I had high expectations for the sex, and this was honestly the part that was most disappointing for me. The sex did not flow naturally...it felt like the author took things that she THOUGHT were sexy and acted the puppeteer for this couple. I don't get the feeling that she wrote what felt sexy to HER, and it showed. For me, there was little to no sensuality, no overwhelming passion or emotion. It felt awkward and forced. And if there is a truly a guy out there who tells me he wants to suckle my breast, I'd love to meet him, truly.
Oh, the sexy dialogue...it burned my eyes. There was simply too much talk, and they only played at talking dirty. I felt literally dirty reading it, like I was intruding on a teenage couple losing their virginity or something. It was just...again...awkward and forced. There were BDSM elements thrown in that were flat out cheesy. It was just a whole other level of awkward, thrown in to satisfy this necessity of a contemporary romance to have some Fifty Shades throwbacks.
I know this author has some wild and crazy fans out there, and I have not read her first series so maybe it's just me. I do see that this book has lower ratings than the much loved first series, so I may have to try that out before forming a hard opinion. This one just did nothing for me.

My Thoughts: Likes - As ever, the island of Pitcairn is fascinating. I grew up in a small town, but nothing compares to this place, this little blip on the radar that is home to so few in number.
And the people who call it home must have a fierce pride in their own brand of paradise, limited resources and electricity usage and all! This is a place where doors aren't only left unlocked, but left open! And hard work and the daily grind take on a whole new meaning when you literally have to labor for your supper.
"Quaint they may be, but they work..."
This is my third book by Nadine and I imagine the real life Pitcairn is much different than what I'm making it out to be in my mind, because I'm seriously seeing the Bounty's Retreat series as the real deal, lol. In my head, I've put this place on my bucket list already, ready to fly into the new...tiny...airport on the even tinier runway to stay at Kate's sparkly hotel. [image] Point is...I have grown fascinated with Pitcairn. This is a place that I'm assuming 90% of the world doesn't even know exists. This is the magic of books... [image]
My Yeti man Bryce makes a cameo appearance and gets to play hero...SWOON! He gives a comforting hug and it was lovely to imagine myself in his arms once again...teehee :D
`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~
Dislikes Although I loved returning to Pitcairn, my love of the romance is what kept me from rating this one higher. The love triangle felt very forced...one guy obviously too good to be true, and when he shows his true colors, it was very blunt and in your face. His complete 180 degree turnaround was way to abrupt. The other guy is the obvious choice, but he and Tina get very little quality page time together until the last 1/3 of the book, so their romance was very very quick. For me, this led to a lack of connecting with them as a couple. I wanted a lot more one on one between the obvious couple...more normal time, more passionate time, more build up between them and less between the guy who seemed to just get in the way. Another thing that was a bit bothersome is the use of what I'm assuming is the Islanders way of speaking...mainly the use of the word "yorley". I tried to do a word count of it, and it was used somewhere around 300 times. I suppose it wouldn't be authentic to only use it on occasion but it was so prevalent that it became obnoxious after awhile. So that's just my own personal preference.
`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~`~*~
Still, I continue to enjoy this series. It's a different spin on a tropical paradise...it's like being stranded on a deserted island, only it's not quite deserted :D With each installment, I get to know the people more and more and I find myself rooting for this community to prosper...not only in this fictional series but in real life too. Who knows...maybe one day, when I'm rich and famous, I'll get to visit the paradise for real. One can dream.

Not only do we get a peek into the lives of our favorite G-men and their ladies...EACH of them get their own short story, and we also get some of the supporting characters continuing romances. The group gets to go on a twelve day cruise and boy, a lot happens on this trip. How did Smith pack such a crazy amount of information and movement into this story, I'll never know. [image]
Breakups, LOTS of makeups, tons of sexy times and a few heart to heart talks along with some gasp-worthy moments make this 100 page novella well worth the time.
And not only do we get a wrap up of the fantastic G-Man series, but we get an epilogue of epic proportions, not one but TWO follow up chapters that were requested enough by readers that I suppose Smith felt like they needed to be told, AND...a fake Chapter that...
OMG, I'm so glad that it was NOT real, but also... OMG, that was SO HOT and naughty and I'm so glad you fake wrote that!
Andrea, I'd never have thought you had that in you. Bravo, woman! I flipping LOVED this story. I've never read anything like it, and I really wish more authors would follow suit, because these are characters that were so loved my so many, and it's always a huge bonus to get to see the aftermath of their crazy couplings. The title, the cover, and the length of this novella length story gave me the impression of a short yet hot little ditty. I expected a couple who's been secretly lusting after each other for months who get stuck in an elevator and finally act on their desires, opening the doors to a possible future relationship.
But what this story told was definitely non-sexy, awkward as heck and had a very juvenile feel. Colin and Maddie are most definitely uncomfortable around each other. They do spend nearly the intire book getting to know the mundane details about each other, but since they already profess to 'love' the other (albeit in their own heads) then the getting to know each other seems pointless.
The point of view was beyond distracting. At first, I thought that the narrative wasn't even going to state their names, what with all of the "he did this" and "she said that". When the point of view switches to bouncing between Colin and Maddie, it was a definite improvement, but the lack of editing was most definitely still a major distraction. There was a lot to notice, and although a few mistakes aren't enough for me to mention, this one was fairly riddled.
I think the story could be a fun one, but execution was awkward at best. The abrupt and directionless ending could have been cute, had I been more invested in the characters.

Skye Jordan has done it again, and I couldn't be more satisfied with Rubi and Wes's story. Just as in Reckless, this book starts off with loads of sexual tension, only Rubi's brand of sexy is definitely more on the fun and flirty and BLATANTLY sexual side. That's just who she is, and therein lies the road block to her and Wes having a real relationship. Because despite Wes' job as a living-on-the-edge stuntman, he tends to go for hometown girl sweethearts when it comes to women.
"Wes was a simple country boy at heart. Money didn't tempt him. He saw fame as a burden. He just wanted to have fun."
My Wes: [image] Rubi is the product of a horribly neglectful father and a slew of nannies. Her mother died when she was very young, and her sperm donor of a father never even made an attempt to pretend that he cared about his only child. Spoiled with money but starving for affection, Rubi has always been alone. Her one and only long time relationship is with her best friend Lexi. And despite how happy she is for Lexi to have found Jax, their relationship only magnifies her own state of perpetual loneliness. Rubi doesn't know how to love, and she has no desire to ever put herself out there like that. My Rubi: [image]
"You're living off a script you put in your head a long time ago, one that doesn't apply to who you've become."
I know that a lot of readers may be angry at Rubi because of her reluctance to be with Wes. However, I hope that they remember that the time frame for this book is pretty short. Less than a month, for sure. Imagine changing your core beliefs in that amount of time. ESPECIALLY after I met Rubi's awful father, I empathized with her much more. This girl really and truly has never known any kind of affection except from her best friends. In Hollywood, she sees mostly failed relationships and false promises, so its no wonder to me that the thought of a real, true, loving, lasting relationship has just never really crossed her mind.
Aside from Rubi's romantic hangups, she's such an awesome character. She's bubbly, she's flirty, she's fun. And Wes latches on to that like none other. He's built for lasting and long term, and I adored his persistence when it came to getting his girl. He just won't take no for an answer.
Which brings me to the yummy part: the SEX!
"God, I want to suck you," he murmured, keeping his fingers light over her pussy. Teasing. "I want to lick you. I want to eat you. I want to fuck you with my tongue. So good. It would be so good."
Welp! I'm done here....that's all I needed to be convinced that Wes is DA MAN! Not to mention one extra special scene (you'll know it when you get there) that nearly caught my eyes on fire.
"Oh, man," he breathed. "Say polar transmission and force sensors again. That fucking turns me on."
So the drop dead gorgeous and slightly nerdy Rubi and the drop dead gorgeous, risk taking country boy do the bonding thing, and this story takes a turn for the truly romantic. Rubi gets to see how a real, loving family acts, and Wes gets to see what molded her into what she has become. This is somewhat reminiscent of Reckless in that this isn't all about the drama and sex. There is a real romance here, one that has to go through some ups and downs and life lessons. Rubi and Wes are alike in many ways, but their differences ares still significant. They both have to figure out if they want to put the effort into what they are feeling and turn it into something more.
There are moments of funny. [image] A sweetheart of a dog. (I love you Skye, for having a part pittie as a loving pet. He reminds me of my dog, coloring and breeding and floppy ear) [image] Along with the California beaches and the Missouri farmlands in the Midwest. This was a well rounded story with real feelings and plausible circumstances. I love how Jordan writes...she's almost like a mix between New Adult and adult contemporaries...her work is polished and clean, her stories full and her characters likeable. This is knockout number two for me by this author, and I'm so happy to have another go-to author for sexy story with heart.
"Close your eyes, precious. I want to fall asleep with you."

Josie grew up in foster care, but this isn't a story of her sad and tragic childhood. No, this is a story of her sad and tragic marriage and the mysteJosie grew up in foster care, but this isn't a story of her sad and tragic childhood. No, this is a story of her sad and tragic marriage and the mystery surrounding her husband's disappearance...and subsequent reappearance. Shane Dean also grew up without a family, but his story is much more horrendous.
Shane is a genetically engineered human...basically a lab rat, born to be used by a secret group within the US government. His upbringing was one of rigorous training...his first kill at age ten, learning to deal with pain to the point of ignoring broken bones...all of that he could do. But the one thing that he and the boys in his group always wanted was a family. Even though they all grew up knowing that a soft, gently mother ready for hugs and cookies just wasn't in the cards for them, the human desire for companionship won out. And Shane and his 'brothers' give each other a loyalty above and beyond any duty the military shows them.
When Shane and Josie met, it was a whirlwind romance that culminated in an even quicker marriage. Josie knew very little about the man she married, but she loved him fiercely. When he left her just months into their marriage, she was devastated. It's not two years later and Shane has been found next to some dead bodies, with no memory of Josie or his own past. All he does know is that it doesn't take long for him to fall back in love with the woman who claims to be his wife.
MY THOUGHTS I love the slight paranormal aspect of this. It's all the more intriguing because the author doesn't shove it in your face the entire book that Shane is different. In all honesty, it just makes him seem even more tough and intense, knowing that he has the skills that he does. I loved that Zanetti doesn't over-explain the special abilities either. Nothing seems so far fetched that you have to consider it sci-fi. I was able to shrug my shoulders and think, "Eh...it could happen **wink, wink**"
His instant obsession with his wife was romantic from the get go. Not only did he fall in love with her years ago, but there is such a pull between these two, it's as if the loss of memories didn't even take away the devotion that he has to Josie. SWOON!
Josie was fairly likeable, but if there was one thing I disliked about the story, it was her feeble attempts at being able to handle herself. Admittedly, she did in fact, hold her own on occasion. But there were so many other times that she verbally spouted off about how tough she was only to be proven wrong instantly. It wouldn't be so bad if she didn't TELL the bad guys how she was going to hurt them or tough it out or whatever, but the fact that she DID and was instantly proven wrong was just embarrassing for her. Either put up or shut up, Josie!
I am beyond excited to get to the next book, which is Matt's story. Matt is the pseudo-parental figure of the four brothers, and he takes on so much of the guilt for what has happened to them. There is a LOT of room for series growth, and a LOT of unanswered questions with regards to the issues raised in this book. Great start for this series!

In this book, a woman is building her dreams without really understanding what they are, and Kristen Ashley cooked up a new alpha to help her out.
SYNOPSIS: Deck was first mentioned in Breathe, and he seemed like the most alpha of alphas to me back then. I have to say, at the beginning of this book, he was bossing around even the other bossy boys, so he did live up to my expectations in that regard. He's some sort of freelance bounty hunter dude, come home to Gnaw Bone to help stop a secretive group of criminals who are using high school kids to do their dirty work.
On day one, Deck runs into Emme, a girl from his past. Not THAT kind of girl...Emme is actually his ex girlfriend's best friend, and she and Deck used to be very close as well. But it seems Deck gave Emme a bit of the cold shoulder when she tried to comfort him years ago after the big break up, and it's been over a decade since they've seen each other. An important friendship wasted due to pride.
Emme has had her own set of troubles, but blossoming into a gorgeous woman most people wouldn't recognize from way back when isn't one of them. Emme has lost her frumpy look and her shy demeanor. And Deck sits up and takes notice. Emme used to be the friend that he felt most comfortable with but he was with her best friend and nothing could ever have come from that. Now, however, Deck is free of entanglements, but it's Emme's new boyfriend that Deck has come to investigate. He's determined not only to get her away from her slimeball boy toy, but also to catch her on the rebound and never let her walk away again.
With the help of Deck's loveable dog and Emme's monstrous mansion, these two have a chance to make a former friendship into a lasting love.
MY THOUGHTS:
While the meat of the story was initially a great setup, this was definitely one of my least favorite Kristen Ashley books. To be totally honest, I couldn't bring myself to like Emme all that much. She seemed like a very wishy washy, flighty character. Not only does she take on a HUGE project like restoring a crumbling old mansion on her own, but when her own father tries to help her out, she puts up this stubborn front that reminded me of a two year old trying to show their independence.
The deal with Emme's past...the big secret of what happened to her when she was twelve...well, I didn't actually see how what she was doing was so detrimental. Honestly, that whole setup screamed of melodrama and just felt like too much. One other thing that really super bothered me was (view spoiler)[ when Emme professes not to want kids...okay, that would be a definite point of contention for a couple. But the way that she and Deck go about changing her mind...please...it was honestly a laugh out loud moment for me. As if she simply doesn't know herself well enough to know whether or not she wants to have kids. Meh. (hide spoiler)]
Despite my very mediocre feelings for this book, there were still things that were classic KA awesome. I love the history between this couple, I love that Emme really just took some living to blossom. Women, I think, learn to be confident and content with what God gave them over time. And I felt that from Emme, and in turn, was able to revel in Deck's fascination with the new her.

MY SYNOPSIS: The story starts out as a typical young innocent miss meets big ole bruiser bad boy. But this is only surface level in this somewhat unconventional story. Natalie is an ordinary American girl, raised by her adoptive parents in the Midwest and is now using the reliable work ethics that her farmgirl upbringing taught her in order to work three jobs and finish up her degree. When her attempts to track down her Russian birth parents ends up at a dead end, she resolves to try again later.
Only...it seems her inquiries did not go unnoticed, and Aleksandr "The Siberian" Sevastyan shows up searching for her.
[image]Before she knows it, she is whisked away to a world of opulence and utter indulgence, but her small town roots hold her fast. And while Natalie is fascinated with Sevastyan and she KNOWS he desires her as well, their lives can't seem to mesh. Sevastyan is an enforcer in the Russian mafia, he's huge and tattooed and everyone seems to fear him. Except for Natalie. His passions are intense and verge on scary, but no one has ever excited her nearly so much as he has. [image] MY THOUGHTS: I'm giggling like a teenager right now, because I am BEYOND READY for the next installment. I can't wait to get more of Sevasyan, the sexy beast of a man. He loves to be bossy in the bedroom, but he has some gentle in his soul and let me tell you, he is exactly the kind of book boyfriend I can fall in love with.
Natalie is quite the likeable heroine. She's a bit bowled over by the raw sexuality that Sevastyan exudes, and she quickly discovers her own desires once she comes into close contact with her new Russian obsession. (Let's not kid ourselves, the girl wants Sevastyan badly). She's along for this crazy ride, finding out a lot more about herself than she bargained for.
** This is part one of what I believe will be a three part series. I wouldn't lump it with the serial novels though. The starting price is only $1.99 for 150 pages so if the next two follow suit, it'll be somewhere around six bucks for 450 pages. That's a good deal from this author. And yes...this has a cliffhanger! Y'all know how I hate those cliffies but each installment is only a month away, so again it skirts the issues I have with both serials and cliffhangers. I'm okay with both aspect in this case.
Anyone who loves an alpha. loves a gamma, anyone ready for a different spin on erotic romance; who craves some danger along with some tenderness...read this book! This is a book about a couple not meant for each other except in their hearts. It's about the Russian mafia and opulence that few get to experience. It's a complete escape that makes me want to jump inside the pages and live it up! Five big stars from me!!!!!!!!

Synopsis What a fantastic finish for this unconventional yet wonderful couple. This books takes the fun and feisty Grace and the swoonalicious heartthrob Jack and really makes them work at their relationship. As if their age differences and Hollywood pressures weren't enough, now Grace has reached a point in her career that she can FINALLY see some upward movement. Her show has caught the eye of some network biggies, and Grace is the star of the show.
Only, it seems the reason that her name is on the lips of the public is not due to her own performances but simply because she is still linked to Jack Hamilton. They haven't brought their relationship out, and yet the occasional redheaded spotting keeps tongues wagging. [image] And now there is just one more reason that people are overlooking her talent...it seems they can't see past the size of her...errr...her size. Grace has inadvertently become a spokeswoman for women with normal amounts of cushion, as opposed to the stick thin and unhealthy norm in Tinseltown. Of course, everyone has an opinion, and Grace figures as long as she's healthy and Jack still loves her assets, she has nothing to worry about. Yet she's still like to be known for her skill rather than her booty.
Meanwhile, Jack is the big man in Hollywood, and he's not handling the fame quite as well as expected. [image] It's the little things that are starting to get to him; the fact that he and Grace are still not an official couple, the constant cameras in his face and his inability to go to the grocery store without getting into a high speed chase are just a few things that Jack grows quickly weary of. [image]
My Thoughts This book had a totally different tone to it than the first two did. There were moments of funny and quite a few lighthearted as well, but the meat of the story is more grounded than before. Grace and Jack love each other, and that's apparent. They really WANT this relationship to work, despite everything that goes against them. Now, they are down to the nitty gritty, daily struggle. Their careers are both taking off, and although Grace is really happy for Jack, she also doesn't want to constantly be in his shadow. When Jack gets a new buddy and begins to stay out celebrating more often than not, Grace tries to chalk it up to his age and his need to unwind.
This was my biggest point of contention with this story, the fact that Grace was making all of these awkward allowances for her boyfriend while he acted like a teenager just cut loose from his parents. Jack was not the same Jack here as he was before. And I felt like Grace put up with him for too long. The last hoorah was over way too quickly, in my opinion. I needed to see some begging and pleading, or at least more than we got from him.
I LOVED how Grace dealt with her critics. At first, of course, she had a few issues with her self esteem. But then she bucked up and basically told them to shove off. Of course, Jack backs her up and it made me love him all the more. He's a horny bastard, and he sure does love those boobies! He doesn't want the girls going ANYWHERE, but even more so, he loves Grace just the way she is.
Which leads me to the SEXY TIMES!!! Let me just reassure you that even though Jack and Grace are dealing with more issues, they still find time to touch. Jack's obsession with the boobies lives on, but even more so than that, Jack and Grace connect best when their sex life is healthy. It's a huge part of this romance, and it's definitely present in this book! [image] I can't even tell you how utterly ABSORBED I was in this book. I looked up at the clock at midnight and thought "No friggin' way I can go to sleep right now. Then at 1 am...still not tired. At 2 am...I gave up and decided to go for broke. From start to finish, I devoured The Redhead Plays Her Hand.

Caroline always felt an attraction to both his looks and his carefree demeanor, but nothing could ever come from it.
I love this quote, and it fits perfectly with Caroline and West: [image]
West felt the same, but his home life and circumstances are such that he simply can't start anything that will make him stray from his course. Caroline must remain a beautiful, untouchable girl that he watches from a distance.
But eventually West can't just sit back and watch Caroline be destroyed over and over again. The lewd and suggestive and downright cruel comments aren't easily overlooked, but especially when he sees what they have done to her. The two strike up an awkward "non-friendship" and slowly begin to relax around each other...each unknowingly giving the other a soft place to land, a shoulder to lean on, a sympathetic and beautiful ear. Nights of bread and conversation turn to a soul-deep friendship that neither can give into. [image] And when their attraction that is more than friendship turns to sexual tension and awareness, they find it impossible to stay away from each other any more.
MY THOUGHTS My thoughts are...wow! First of all, I have to say that this DOES have a cliffhanger, but it's not one of those that you can't see coming from a mile away. You know the inevitable is going to happen, and to be honest, I couldn't see any other way for this book to end. It's going to take another full story to wrap this up. And I honestly think some down time for me might be a good thing. I was hurting for West and Caroline so badly by the end.
All of the feelings that Caroline is having are just simply terrible. This poor girl. Of course, she made a mistake. But it's only Caroline who gets punished for something that someone else did, and this is a punishment that literally ruins her entire life, takes over her psyche and rules her every day choices and thoughts. She does have a small circle of friends, some that she makes over the course of this book, and I'm so glad for that small gift.
I loved how the relevant people to this story are all very human. One friend is a major player, one a bisexual woman rugby player (I loved her!!!) and Caroline and West are equally jacked up. [image]
West is trying to raise his station in life, go to medical school, and support his baby sister and protect her from their mother's terrible choices and their father's abuse. But he knows that any day, he may have to leave college and the dreams he has. He's always had to grow up too quickly, but now he's on the verge of bettering himself and the unfairness and his bitterness just tore at my heart.
This isn't a case of contrived circumstances and over dramatized junk. Caroline and West are going to have to make some major decisions, some major life changes, and each of them is going to have to do the one thing that will be the hardest for each of them: They have to trust each other.
Not easy to do for either of them. [image] I loved this book SO VERY MUCH. This is a stay up late clutching at your reader type of book. I couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel no matter how badly I wanted it to be there. But this journey not only one of utter betrayal and heartbreak, but one of healing and trusting and moving beyond what others think of you. It's a journey of self discovery, and this author made magic for me.

This is also about a guy who has experienced a tragedy and is starting to deal with the emotional wreckage. And he loves cupcakes. Each of them is loaded with guilt and attempting to move on.
What I liked: I loved how in depth the tattoo artist lifestyle was described. This wasn't just a bad boy with some ink, this was a guy who expressed himself and his emotions through his art. Whether on his own skin or other people's. And Hayden felt very proprietary about it. He got sick of inking hearts and butterflies on silly college freshmen looking to rebel in the most inconspicuous of places. Tattooing was a huge part of him and who he is.
Honestly, I think I just loved Hayden. His past is an easy one to relate to, and his shame and guilt about the role he played in his past mistakes came across as very genuine. And the story with Hayden's ex lover, the way she keeps throwing herself at him and he's just ashamed to think that he actually hit that...I loved that part. Haven't we all done things we are ashamed of? Certainly in our formative teenage years, when we think we and those we love have all the time in the world to live, and when we are selfish in our actions because we just don't know better yet. This aspect of the book really resonated with me, and made Hayden an extremely sympathetic character. [image] The sex scenes were well done, in my opinion. Nothing to explicit or too often. It didn't overshadow the story, it enhanced the romance. And a few of the details about the sex were some of my favorite things as well, so it just hit the mark for me. I love when Hayden prompts Tenley to tell him what she wants, what feels good. It's dirty talk without the raunch, it's a way of connecting without sounding like porn stars. It was just a great way to enhance the act and force Tenley to be more vocal and involved. It was dead sexy. Hayden and his tattoos, his piercings, his sexy talk...it added up to some really hot loving. [image]
What I didn't like: Tenley...she was a hard character to love. I like that the way she was initially coping with her own tragedies was to throw herself into school and moving away from the dead weight holding her back. But good grief, the girl added so much unnecessary drama to her own life. Whereas Hayden's shame stemmed from some seemingly realistic feelings, Tenley's lack of self worth felt contrived and whiny. Why would you not tell your lover...a guy that you have THIS strong of feelings for...about your past? Why the big secret? I just don't get it, and since the entire conflict stemmed from her inability to open up, it ruined her character for me. She seemed self destructive despite the attempt to make her a strong female. I sort of wish that more than ten months had gone by since the accident. I think she would have been in a much better place mentally to deal with the fallout of this new relationship. And then the focus could have been less on her secretiveness and more on her healing.
Some of the random things that caught my attention were very minor hiccups but still pulled me out of the story. The no sex rule after the tattoo...what? That's so contrived to add tension here. So it's a back piece...you don't have to lay on your back to have sex. That's ridiculous...we don't live in Victorian England. Throw that chick up against the counter (as that was a fave place of Hayden's...yum!) and get 'er done. Silly little things like that bothered me and kept this from getting a better rating from me. [image] Last but not least...the LAST IMPRESSION THAT I HAD OF THIS BOOK was UTTER DISAPPOINTMENT. Such a ridiculous cliffhanger, and it was so unnecessary. NOTHING is explained or finished in this book. If you expect an ending to this story or any type of closure whatsoever, you will be disappointed. It doesn't happen. This book simply stops in the middle of a dramatic scene. And what is such a bummer is how much ample opportunity the author had to finish out at least a couple of the smaller conflicts, to give her readers SOME kind of resolution, some kind of meaning to these 400 pages that they just read. Just a couple of suggestions: (view spoiler)[ Why not end the conflict with either the pervy professor or the ass hole cop? Do those stories really need to continue? (hide spoiler)] Honest to goodness, I would have been in a much better place if just one thing had come from this book, but all I got was more and more and more conflict, leading up to...more conflict.

MY SYNOPSIS: Athena was a Domme to her husband before he died of cancer a few years ago. Since his death, she has visited their club of choice but cannot bring herself to pick another sub. Not only does she feel too guilty, but no one seems to trip her trigger in the least. She has healed as much as she thinks she can from losing the love of her life. She thinks that maybe that part of her life is over, that her husband was not only her one true companion, but her one submissive as well.
"She told him that she'd be all right, that his Mistress would always love him. He would like her putting it in those terms, she knew. So his Mistress let him go, even as his wife sat at his bedside, clutching his hand, the loneliness closing around her when his breath stopped and he obeyed her."
Until she sees a certain Master one night at the club and is captured by his ability with his submissive.
Dale is a retired Navy SEAL, and considered to be one of the most proficient Doms at the club. But when he sees Athena's reaction to a scene between he and a sub one night and then gets the opportunity to play hero later when she's nearly robbed, Dale takes full advantage of his suspicions. Of course, he is correct in thinking that Athena's status as a Domme only stemmed from her submissive desires to do anything she could to please her husband.
In other words, she's always been a closet submissive. My Athena: [image]
My Dale: [image]
"With a subtle demand, the power had shifted."
So this is the story of Dale teaching Athena to accept her true nature and to give herself to him, her Master. And in turn, she teaches him how to allow someone else to care for him...sort of.
MY THOUGHTS: Boy, was I not ready for this book. I feel I need to clarify my experience with BDSM books so that you will understand my stance here. I've read a few of the genre. I know my limits, and I do tend to like the lighter, more playful punishments and scenes. I can handle the lighter stuff. That being said, a friend convinced me to give Joey W. Hill a chance, and two of her books went straight to my favorites of all time shelf. Neither of these books was necessarily light BDSM...in fact, each had a couple of very cringeworthy scenes. However, the characterization and the stories themselves were ultimately beyond beautiful and so evocative that I actually understood the BDSM elements more than ever before. I understood the need to submit, the need to let go of all choices, the trust that it takes to give yourself over completely to this other person and expect them to not only push you past your limits, but to make you crave it as well. These books, in case you want to give them a whirl, are: Rough Canvas Ice Queen Mirror of My Soul
However, this book didn't come even close to either the intensity of emotion or give me the ability to empathize with the characters. I couldn't connect with either of them. That was the first strike. I just felt like Dale was a very flat, one dimensional guy. We know a few facts about him...his Navy career, his sexual predilections, and a handful of things about his past. But we don't spend any real time with him as anything but a Master. I thought at first that I would love him, but I felt like I just kept expecting something to happend that would make me fall, and it never happened.
Same with Athena; all of the elements were there for me to click with this woman, and I just couldn't. She didn't come across as submissive to me. She came across as weak. She could pretend a good game in the corporate world, but in private, she was so unsure of herself, so timid and accepting of anything that Dale would do to her, I honestly ended up just being a bit disgusted.
A few specific things bothered me more than others. 1. When Dale won't give her a safe word, AND he takes away the ability to gesture as well, because obviously he's been with her long enough (a couple of weeks at the time) that he will be able to read her body language.
2. When he gives her a ring gag and fucks her mouth...and afterwards, scoops up the drool and semen and feeds it to her. [image]
I stuck it out because I expected more, and I just kept getting more and more...spankings and punishments. I'd say that roughly 75% of this book was Dale punishing Athena. Like I said in an update, had this been a romance book and the 'scenes' been sex, it would have been laughable. As it was, for me, it was SO RIDICULOUSLY overdone. THIS was the reason I didn't connect with Athena or Dale. I could see them as nothing but a Dom and his sub. They stopped being real to me, and started inducing eye rolls.
While this book does not necessarily hard core BDSM, I would not categorize it as light either, mainly due to the sheer amount of 'play' going on. Not to mention, there is a huge difference in embracing your submissive side and just accepting whatever someone wants to do to you. I think there is a delicate balance there, and she missed the mark for me. I was more often either bored or horrified. And if there was romance here, it was way overshadowed by bruises and punishments.

He and Kathleen are broken up and everyone, including Kade, is having to deal with the fallout of Blane's betrayal. But the past comes back to haunt them, and when Blane feels responsible for yet again putting Kathleen in danger, he calls in the big guns to help him protect her...Kade.
Kathleen was devastated to learn how little Blane trusted her, and despite his heroics in book three of this series, she is having a hard time letting go and forgiving the man that she fell so hard for.
"Blane should have believed me when it counted, when I'd stood in his office while he accused me of being unfaithful, of betraying him. that;s when he should have believed me. It was far too late now for anything he said to matter."
[image] It seems as if Blane finally pushed her into the arms of his own brother, the strong man who has only ever had one weak spot...Kathleen.
But Blan will not give up so easily, and he's obvious about his intentions and remorseful about his past deeds. So it's head to head once again between the two brothers, and this is the most angsty book of the love triangle so far. Lines are drawn and Kathleen has to make a decision.
With someone targeting Kathleen, these three now have to work together again, but their relationships aren't nearly as congenial as they have been up to this point. Sexual tension is off the charts, and unexpected events lead to unexpected circumstances.
Kate gets a lot of facetime, and I felt like we got to know him so much better in this book. Instead of backing off for his brother's sake, Blane's betrayal of them both has made Kade decide to up the ante and let Kathleen know how much he wants her. Still, he does not deem himself relationship material, and he also brings that to the forefront.
"I'm not the hero, princess," he said roughly. "Hell, I'm not even the good guy."
Each successive book in this series has gotten hotter and hotter, and this one is no exception. My ears were burning, my cheeks on fire. And I want more. I feel like I could read this series forever. I don't even care if she makes a decision between the guys. I don't care if they're brothers, and it doesn't bother me in the least.
I love Kathleen Turner. She's one tough chick, and she's the kind of heroine that I love to read about. She's self sufficient but just needy enough to be saved on occasion. She's also an extremely loyal friend and a defender of the weak, even when her strengths are minimal. She does what's right. That's what makes her guilt about loving two men so bearable. Her guilt is genuine, but her conflict is also understandable. I still can't choose, and I'm on the outside looking in! (gotta admit, I've always leaned more toward being team Kade, but ESPECIALLY after the way Blane acted in the last book.) I can totally empathize with her situation.
"And I was suddenly tired of it all. Tired of feeling guilty for coming between Blane and Kade. tired of seeing my hopes and dreams vaporizing into dust. Tired of losing people I lived. tired of the heartache I endured each and ever day and the regrets I had for trusting a man who couldn't trust me in return. But mostly I was tired of doing what I was supposed to do, when I got nothing from it but pain and a broken heart."
This is yet another action packed, edge of your seat thrilling ride. [image]
From the word go, I was sucked in and glued to these pages. And even though there isn't an obviously clear cut winner on the triangle front, for me, it's fairly obvious who Kathleen has given her heart to. ...more

What initially started as a sort of opposites attract, reporter/politician romance turned out to be a very well put together tale of forbidden love. Brady is extremely single-minded and focused on his career, but his fascination with Liz is nothing short of a beautiful trainwreck.

Not exactly what I expected but a fun read. Lovers of Kristen Ashley will most definitely get more out of it than people who have never experienced her level of awesome. I'm going to just go out on a limb and assume that this will encourage a few non-believers to give KA's books a shot. And they will likely bow down to Laurel Ulen Curtis for pointing them in the right direction. I applaud her just for that. But she also had a great idea for her characters.
I suppose with three stars, most people will think that I didn't like it, and that's not the case. I was pretty engaged the whole time. I just think my expectations colored my thoughts. With a title like this, I expected the male lead to me more...KA like and...well, more alpha. And this guy was a great guy, but he really wasn't all that alpha. He lets his woman continue on her road trip and date other guys. That's not alpha. That's almost a pushover. Also, the road trip aspect consisted of Alabama and Vegas and that's just about it. I guess I just wanted something different. But I'm still glad I read it. Anyone this big a KA fan is good people ;D
I really, really wanted Allison to get a man as well, but the focus was really just on Haley's love life, with Allison along for the ride. Which I suppose was another expectation that I set for myself and didn't get.
There were a lot of funny moments, and Haley and Danny were a great couple together. I loved how he just sort of rolled with her quirky, goofy behavior and always wanted to make her happy.
There's a bit of a twist that I think most readers will be able to spot from a mile away. Problem is, the twist is never really explained very well. (view spoiler)[Why the hell was Danny even put into witness protection? Someone kills his parents and so he changes his name and hides out for twenty years? I think the gist of my thoughts is that the series feels a bit directionless. There is a lot happening, but I don't see they WHY of it all. The story with Kevin and his weird little sick obsession should be getting more attention, I would think. And the fact that Jonathan is allowing Monica to work with him still...and not telling her things that she should really know about sort of blows my mind. (view spoiler)[ I'm quite surprised that more people don't latch onto the fact that due to Jonathan's decision to keep Monica in the dark directly leads to her getting into a physical fight with Kevin...the girl is running away in the middle of the night, without any way to get home. Wake up call, man! Time to tell her the deets! One other thing that makes me rage is how he played Jessica, to the point that he spanked her with his belt. I'm sorry, but Hands. Fucking. OFF! That's skirting the infidelity line for me. He took it to far, I don't give a crap whether he enjoyed it or not. (hide spoiler)]
The relationship has taken a more serious turn, their feelings beginning to come into play and also to become more honest. Jonathan's character in the first four books seemed to have a few vulnerabilities, which really endeared him to me. Monica, obviously, is in a very tough spot in her life. And I really didn't like the way she started acting here. If this is leading where I think it's leading, I'm going to be very disappointed. I don't want her to turn into a girl who obsesses over her Dom, who can't function without his brand of sex/love on a daily basis. She acts desperate and somewhat pathetic. I suppose I do see the sexy factor to a certain extent. Chickie is horny! And the only relief she can get is Jonathan's brand of lovin'. She's a newbie addict. But I want more romance and less obsessive infatuation, I suppose. I want the desperation to be based on love, not the other way around.
One thing I LOVE about Jonathan is how he has his own limits. There are certain things he doesn't enjoy...sharing and humiliation being two of them. And although he will do whatever Monica truly wants him to do, it's all about the pleasure for them both. He pushes Monica because he knows she will enjoy something...not because HE will dig it. He truly considers her pleasure at all times. Still, there is plenty of room for character growth and plenty of room for the forever kind of love to happen. I'm anxious to see where the author takes them from here.

Cynthia Eden is baaaaack....and she totally knocked it out of the park with this stellar Romantic Suspense. I'd say it was heavy on the suspense, and it was...but it was also heavy on the romance, heavy on intensity, heavy on awesome. :D
MY SYNOPSIS: In this story, a sadistic serial killer escapes from prison with one goal in mind: to bring down the woman who caged him for five years, District Attorney Lauren Chandler. And not only does he not care how many people he has to kill to get to her; but he absolutely revels in each bloody murder, lingering over his victims when he can, enjoying each slice of his blade and leaving pointed non-clues for those that he knows are chasing him. [image] When the Bayou Butcher escapes, US marshal Anthony Ross immediately knows who his next target will be. Not only was Anthony part of the team that took down the killer, but he was also hopelessly addicted to Lauren as well; albeit in a much more romantic way. But he chose to walk away, for reasons of his own, leaving the stoic DA much more brokenhearted than she ever let on.
Now these two attempt to head off their old nemesis. But he's smart and savvy, and it seems he's always one step ahead.
MY THOUGHTS: Wow, I was riveted to this book. The pacing was perfection; I read it from start to finish in one night, staying up way later than I should have because the whodunnit completely eluded me until the big reveal. Is it just me or is it really hard to pinpoint the bad guy in Eden's novels? I never, ever can spot them! Same with this book...I had a couple of ideas, both of which ended up being wrong. Let me tell you, this guy is pretty bad. Not so gruesome that you have to be squeamish. No rape or really disturbing things....well, other than the fact that he likes to take his time slicing people up. But compared to the psychological darkness that seems to permeate romance lately, this was just good ole evil villain bad guy. [image] I tend to love a second chance romance. I love the initial awareness between a couple that has already shared intimacy...it's a completely different atmosphere than just sexual attraction. It's sexual attraction paired with both affection and awkwardness. Lauren and Anthony most definitely have the awareness thing going on, but they also both have emotions that go much deeper than they are willing to let on. Each time they were together, the air sizzled. And when they finally seal the newest deal...WOW. Smoking hot, with real emotional depth behind the sexy.
"I could never forget the way you taste," he said. Her lashes lifted. His eyes...she pulled in a quick breath...he looked hungry. Not for food. "Sin and sweetness, all twisted together. You fucking bring me to my knees."
Lauren is a bit more reserved with her emotions, but she can't deny them. And when Anthony starts to sort of stake his claim again...because he can't help it, really...she seems to like it. And so did I! Possessive alpha, yes he is! Yet he's realistic and loveable as well. Not over the top in any way. THIS is an alpha that I'd like to lick...I mean, love...in real life.
So, this was a second chance romance, fully self contained, phenomenally intense and just spicy enough to ramp up the romance. I five star read for me, and yet another example of Eden's amazing storytelling skills.
"Love could be twisted for some. Anthony's hand brushed lightly over Lauren's arm. And love could be dark and dangerous and perfect for others."
