I wasn't sure how many stars to rate this book. I didn't enjoy it enough to give it 3 stars but the story sounded decent enough. Then I saw that I noticed that Krueger is also the author of This Tender Land, which I was also excited to read but ended up missing the mark.
I listened to the audiobook which failed to grab my attention until I reached around 75% of the book. This is never good because I kept replaying some chapters since I often got distracted listening to the audio (although I was not doing anything but riding a bus).
I also felt that the story wouldn't progress. Too many unnecessary details about every single character we were introduced to and it was difficult for me to keep track amid useless information.
The last few chapters were the best part of the story. The book feels more like a historical drama than a thriller actually since it's heavily focused on the characters. The audio narration was decent but I think Krueger's writing style is simply not for me....more

I I do love a fun historical romance from time to time. I find myself to enjoy Tessa Dare's novels the most but I wanted to try one of Hoyt's novels. I didn't mind starting with the 10th book of the series since I doubt I'll be reading the previous instalments and it was obvious some characters, like Eve, were part of previous stories. However, it didn't affect my enjoyment.
I finished the book in one day and while it was fun, some moments truly made me uncomfortable and I'm not sure what to make of them.
- the duke kidnapping another woman which was just extreme - saying a child's fingers are "soft" (long story short, he mistook a child's hands for the FMC when he was sick and both were helping clean him or something)
Additionally, I didn't feel any chemistry between the MCs and Bridget was so meh. She was practical indeed but the change in her attitude and sudden decision she was fine with sleeping with him was so abrupt. Additionally, what she did at the end was very stupid and uncalled for. The decision she took was to make the story progress only regardless of its implications on her relationship with the duke....more

I rather enjoyed the Life We Bury. The characters were okay and the story developed at a good pace. I think I'll be reading the sequel.

I didn't round it up to 4 stars because it didn't leave its mark on me. The thing is, having read many tragic stories/stories with damaged parents, in some situations, the excessive dramatic flair on the family problems gets on my nerves. Our main lead has an autistic brother, his mother is an alcoholic, and she barely cares for his brother, her boyfriend abuses his brother, the MC had to bail her out of jail and pay his university tuition on bail to care for his brother (which she didn't), and then at the end, we have the family problem solved (view spoiler)[accidentally having a large sum of money that would solve the problems of his university and caring for his brother), so an overtop family drama and an unrealistic way to solve it) (hide spoiler)]. This was why I didn't round up my rating to 4 stars.
Overall, the book was a good mystery and I'll be listening to its sequel once it's on OneDrive. The audio is also well-narrated if you enjoy listening to audiobooks!...more

Read it because it’s addicting and fun. The final could’ve been guessed very early on but I still finished the book quickly because you still want to read the next chapter. Characters wise, I wished we got to read Liam’s perspective but I suppose it’s part of the story not knowing what goes on in his head.
The audiobook was very well narrated! Would recommend it....more

It's one of those novels where you know it's not the mistake of the characters but the author's for writing this book this way.
I highly enjoyed the first two books and I couldn't put them down. I liked our main leads, Cedra and Rowan and enjoyed reading their adventures. However, this book felt more like a filler, shoving liberal and political principles at the reader. Does it matter if there's no need for it? No, it doesn't. I'm not sure if it's the editor's idea of Shusterman to integrate political opinions on our lives in a dystopian novel (kinda too late for that, no?).
My main issue however was with little spotlight our leads received. Not even Greyson's arc was that interesting. We had a range of new characters who occupied most of the pages and I honestly couldn't care less about them. I really wished Cedra and Rowan had more spotlight (and I just remember, what happened to the mosaic guy from book #2? I don't recall reading ANYTHING about him).
I am not fan of multiple perspectives and increasing them in the last instalment without a justifiable excuse? No, thank you. I really don't care what all those characters are thinking especially since some would pop up for a passage/chapter or two then be ignored (thankfully). It felt like Shusterman was writing with no clear direction because no, the events didn't align from book 1. I really like endings that make you feel like everything fell into place in such books and The Toll lacked that. The conclusion was "meh".
The book was also 200 pages too long. The many added perspectives only served to extend the book and we have many chapters were nothing was happening and I was just waiting for some action to unfold.
I am honestly fond of the characters to rate this book below 3 stars and I would still be recommending this trilogy if anyone was looking for a fast paced/fun dystopian....more

From time to time, I enjoy reading a historical romance. While this novel started well enough, it went downhill. After the 50%, the plot was barely going anywhere. It also became repetitive. I didn't like Callie much, while I understood some of her feelings, her actions didn't make much sense, especially towards 60% of the book. None of the secondary characters stood out either. Hence, I won't be recommending this HR even to the fans of this genre because it falls short when you compare it to other titles in this genre.
I didn't rate it one star because I didn't hate the book. I simply couldn't care enough about the story and its MCs to continue....more
